We are buzzing into another 4-H year? Don’t get stung by not knowing all the important 4-H dates and opportunities. Use the 2020 4-H Calendar enclosed to keep your 4-H hive buzzing to all those 4-H activities and to a successful 4-H project completion.

2020 is not only a Leap Year, but a Palindrome year too. So what is a Palindrome date?

• It is a date that can be read the same forward and backward.

• There are three Palindrome dates during Feb. 2020 (02/02/2020, 02/11/20 and 02/22/20) and a total of 38 in the 21st Century.

• The first one was 10/02/2001 and the last one will be 09/02/2090 in the MM/DD/YYYY format.

All returning 4-H members, cloverbuds and volunteers will be re-enrolling in 4-H this year on-line using 4-H On-line.

Your 4-H Club Advisor has your 4-H Re-enrollment Packet to assist you in completing your re-enrollment process. Deadline April 1st to re-enroll.

4-H families that would like assistance with the On-Line Enrollment System can receive one-on-one assistance from Extension staff during the following times: Mon.-Fri., 8 AM to 4:30 PM at the Extension Office or By Appointment After Hours March 4, 5:30 PM-8:30 PM at Kickoff March 30, 31 and April 1, 4:30 PM-7 PM at the Ext. Office

Payment of your 4-H Activity Fee by May 1st is required for full 4-H membership benefits including eligibility for Clark County Fair & Ohio State Fair.

Activity Fees: $25 per member and $5 per Cloverbud. Pay anytime prior to May 1st by mailing check payable to the Clark Co. 4-H Committee, P.O. Box 444, Springfield, OH 45501. Who: Girls, age 16 to 19 with at least 2 years of swine project experience or whose family is a pork producer.

• Feeders must be qualified single dairy breed male calves of the Holstein or Brown Swiss breed ONLY!

• Utilize “Purchasing Your Dairy Feeder” handout and the Breed Characteristics Chart included in the 2020 Clark County 4-H Project Req. Guide for Dairy Feeders when making your dairy feeder selections— http://clark.osu.edu/topics/4-h-youth-development/project-requirements • Feeders must be castrated & dehorned by the May 9, Weigh-In & Tag-In or they will not be tagged. No castrating or dehorning at tag-in!

What: Selection of dairy feeders and dairy heifers and cows, veterinarian to discuss health care, feed practices, rule changes, quality assurance and more for all dairy projects.

Door prizes and refreshments provided by the Clark County Dairy Committee and local sponsors. One of the door prizes is a certificate for a dairy calf for the feeder project.

Any member wanting to show market turkeys, market ducks or meat chickens at the 2020 Clark County Jr. Fair must order their day old birds through the Clark County 4-H & FFA Rabbit & Poultry Committee.

Use the Clark County Market Order Form on-line at clark.osu.edu to order your birds by the deadlines listed below.

Order Market Turkeys by March 4. Minimum of 6 tom turkeys at $7/bird per order form. Pick up tom turkeys on April 1, 5 PM-7 PM, Ext. Office.

Order Meat Chickens and Meat Ducks by May 9. Minimum of 6 meat chickens ($3/bird) or 3 meat ducks ($4/duck) per order form. Pick up June 3, 5 PM-7 PM, Ext. Office.

Payment for birds must be made with order form.

Horse, Dog & Shooting Sports Permission Participate Forms

Due April 1st.

• All Horse Members and their parents must sign and submit the Horse Permission to Participate Form.

• All Dog Members and their parents must sign and submit the Dog

Permission to Participate Form.

• All Shooting Sports members and their parents must sign and submit the Shooting Sports Permission to Participate Form. In addition, Shooting Sports Projects members participating in a shooting sports project with a firearm must also complete and sign a Handgun Possession Form.

All of the forms above come in a 3-part carbonless form - one copy is kept by the member’s parent, one copy by the club advisor and one copy is to be turned into the Extension Office no later than April 1st.

Attention All Market Hog Project Members

• 4-H Market Hog 1 (first year 4-H members with market hogs) may show a maximum of 2 market hogs and one must be a purebred if showing two. May sell a maximum of one.

• 4-H Market Hog 2 (2nd year and beyond) and FFA may show a maximum of 2 market hogs and can be any combination. May sell a maximum of one.

• Scramble Exhibitors may show their maximum number of Market Hogs in 4-H or FFA and a scramble pig, but may only sell one pig and it must be the scramble.

• Each exhibitor may pre-enter a max. of 10 market hogs by May 15.

• Each exhibitor MUST make entry using the 2020 Market Hog I.D. Form and submit no later than May 15, 2020 to the Extension Office. NO LATE ENTRIES! County farrowed eligibility requires breeder signature on the form. Forms available at: clark.osu.edu

Jo Brown Announces

Retirement

Jo Brown, OSU Extension, Clark Co. Office Associate is retiring March 31st after 25 years of dedicated service to OSU Extension. During her tenure, she has supported the Clark County 4-H Program in numerous ways from answering calls, selling project books, managing fiscal accounts, processing background check reimbursements and so much more. Her support to the entire Clark County Extension Office will be greatly missed. Please join us in congratulating Jo in reaching this important life milestone.

OSU Extension, Employment Opportunity

With Jo’s retirement, OSU Extension, Clark County will soon be posting the Office Associate support staff position. The position will be 50% Fiscal Management/Accounting and 50% Customer Service and Programmatic Support for 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences and Horticulture Programming. Desired qualifications include experience with accounting, fiscal management, Microsoft Office and Adobe software, strong marketing skills with web and social media platforms, excellent communication skills and a focus on superior customer service. 4-H Project Enrollment = Clark County Fair and Ohio State Fair Participation

We must verify that your enrolled in the 4-H projects you enter in and have completed those projects prior to signing off on your Ohio State Fair and Clark County Fair entries. If you are a family that plans to show breeding sheep or breeding swine at the Ohio State Fair, please make sure that you enroll in the breeding sheep and/or breeding swine project in addition to the market project as a 4-H member. If you plan to show any 4-H project at the Ohio State Fair, but not the Clark County Fair, you must still enroll in the 4-H project and complete skill-a-thon/project judging to be eligible to show.

Enrollment + Skill-a-thon/Project Judging + Meeting 4-H Club Membership/Participation Requirements = Clark County Fair and/or Ohio State Fair Eligibility.

College Summer Internships

Thanks to the support of the Clark County Commission, we will once again be able to offer summer college internships. The internship is from mid-May to mid-August. Applicants must no longer be age eligible to participate in the Clark County 4-H Program. The internship includes assisting with all the various 4-H programming throughout the summer including skill-a-thons, project judging, camp, Fair, quality assurance, etc. If you know of a college student that is interested in an internship with the OSU Extension, Clark County 4-H Program, please have them e-mail [email protected] for more details and a link to the internship posting when available.
