We have begun our official 4-H year with the closing of the 4-H enrollment deadline as of 4/1/19. I will be working closely with committees to organize animal registrations in the near future. TRUMBULL COUNTY SADDLE HORSE COMMITTEE

SPAGHETTI DINNER On Sunday, April 7th the Trumbull County Saddle Horse Committee will be having a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent

Auction from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Cortland Moose located on State Route 46. Cost is $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for

children (ages 5-10). Carry out is available. Proceeds will benefit equine 4-H clubs.

TRUMBULL COUNTY JR. FAIR BOARD PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The Jr. Fair Board will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 14, 2019 from 8:00 am-2:00 pm. Cost is $8.00 for all

4-H CLUB MINI GRANTS

The 4-H Advisory Committee provides opportunities for financial assistance when it comes to club educational

activities, community service projects and other educational endeavors. Mini grants are offered

quarterly (April 1, July 1, September 1 and January 1). In order to receive a mini grant, clubs must fill out an

application and detailed budget. The mini grant maximum per quarter is $500.00. For more

information, please visit trumbull.osu.edu under the 4-H Forms & Applications Tab.

HONOR CLUB APPLICATIONS

It’s never too early to start building your honor club application! I encourage all clubs to look at the points

system and set goals for the club to achieve honor club status. Many points are given by participating county events! How will you strive to make the best

better in your club in 2019?

CONFERENCE ROOM RESERVATIONS

FOR CLUB MEETINGS Reminder: Please call Amy Reeher [330-637-2056] at

the Soil & Water Conservation District Office to reserve your club’s meeting dates for 2019. First come first

serve! Several clubs utilize the large conference room available at the Trumbull Agriculture and Family

Education Center. If you do use the room regularly for your club meetings, please remember to be respectful of the space and leave it cleaner than you found it :] *

Please keep in mind that the conference room can only be reserved for civic or educational

events/meetings.

CARTEENS Trumbull County 4-H partners with the Ohio State

Highway Patrol and Trumbull County Courts to help young people understand the importance of safe

driving. We are on the search for teen volunteers to help lead our program! As teen leaders, you will help

assist with hands-on activities with our program participants. Our program is offered once per month

for three hours. This is an excellent community service opportunity and to network with teens. For more

4-H News for Advisors and Members

ACTIVITY FEE REMINDER Advisors- a reminder that the 2019 4-H Activity Fee of $10.00 will be not be due with your 4-H enrollment and animal registration forms. Instead, you will receive a reminder from the office in May with a

roster of 4-H’ers in your club (primary members). The activity fee will be due June 1, 2019 via club check. Please remember that if activity fees are not paid on time, you risk not receiving your 2019 Trumbull

County Fair passes for your club!

4-H MEMBERSHIP-AFTER APRIL 1ST After the April 1st enrollment deadline, members are locked in to the

club(s) and projects they have enrolled in for the year. Head advisors were mailed a club roster of active members as of 3/12. This

roster serves as a preliminary check point to check club enrollment and associated projects. Please contact the office if deletions need to

be made. It is normal for members to drop projects and is appreciated to communicate that information with the OSUE Office.

Membership can still be granted after the April 1st deadline by way of “associate membership”. This means that the 4-H member can join

the 4-H club and attend meetings, club activities and complete project judging but they are not permitted to exhibit their project at the

Trumbull County Fair or Ohio State Fair for competition. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

2019 4-H PROJECT GUIDELINES The 4-H project guidelines are a tool and resource for families and

clubs to keep tabs of deadlines and important upcoming events. Each set of guidelines provides a checklist, special project notes, project

information & fair information.

Guidelines are available for the following areas: Beef Clothing Companion Animal Dairy Dairy Feeder Food & Nutrition General/Still

VOLUNTEER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Advisors can achieve their annual trainings through a multitude of

different avenues. One of those avenues is to attend a multi-county volunteer training. The training is put on by 4-H educators in

Annual Accident Insurance American Income Life

Please remember the Sr. Fair Board REQUIRES you to purchase annual accident insurance ($1 for volunteers and 4-H members, $2 for equine) through American Income Life. You MUST submit proof of coverage before fair passes will be distributed to your club. AIL supplies annual accident insurance and short term special event insurance.

2018-2019 Club Officer Book Requirement

As clubs are electing officers for the new year, keep in mind that Secretary and Treasurer records/binders will be due the 1st Monday in October in 2019 to the OSUE Office and every year after. Moving forward, this will be a strict requirement. The 4-H Advisory Committee will be reviewing these materials and providing positive and constructive feedback to improve club management skills. Please take this seriously and alert your new officers of the collection and their responsibility as an officer.

TRUMBULL COUNTY QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM

2019 Focus: Good Production Practices 7, 8 & 9

7. Practice good environmental stewardship.

8. Maintain proper workplace safety. 9. Provide proper animal handling and care.

Quality Assurance Training is MANDATORY for all junior fair participants exhibiting livestock animals. Market Livestock Exhibits include any animal that produces meat or milk. Each 4-H member planning to exhibit a market / dairy livestock animal at the Trumbull County Junior Fair must attend a program along with at least one parent or guardian (if younger than 16 years of age and if have already taken a livestock/dairy project at least once in the past). Please keep in mind that it is Fair Board Policy and Ohio Revised Code (901-19-36) Law that this training be completed for both new and returning 4-H market livestock exhibitors. What happens if a member fails to complete the training? Any

4-H member who has not completed one of the Quality Assurance Programs will not be permitted to participate in Junior Fair with his or her projects or to sell at the Trumbull County Fair.

Quality Assurance will be offered ONE TIME ONLY. There will be a quality assurance program on April 6, 2019 at the Trumbull Fairgrounds from 9:00-11:30 AM. If you are unable to attend this quality assurance session, you have the option of:

Quality Assurance Training must be complete at least 45 days prior to the beginning of fair (July 7, 2019). The last day to obtain training is May 23, 2019.

REMINDER: YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THE FACE-TO-FACE PROGRAM ON APRIL 6. Nearby County Programs: Ashtabula: April 28 - 1:30 p.m.-4-H Expo Building @ Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. $5.00 fee for Out of County participants. No admittance after the first 10 mins. Geauga: May 4 - 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. @ Geauga County Fairground. $5.00 fee for Out of County participants. Must be checked-in by 9:55 a.m. Portage: April 27 10:00 - Noon & May 19 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. @ Portage County Fairgrounds – Hubbard Building $5.00 fee for Out of County participants. If you plan to participate at another county, please call the Trumbull Office to RSVP.

4-H Project Book Order Reminders

• All 4-H Project Book Orders must be made in writing using the advisor order form. Forms are available through the Extension Office. Only advisors should be placing orders for project books with a club check in order to be tax free.

• FULL payment must accompany all orders. Please make checks payable to: Ohio State University Extension, Trumbull County. Please place club name in the memo area of the check. Make sure you are using the 2019 Project Book Order Form.

• Project books must be ordered by May 1, 2019.

DAIRY PALOOZA

Dairy Palooza is an educational, hands-on learning day for dairy 4-H members and families. Quality Assurance will also be offered at this event. In the past, sessions have included tips on showmanship, fitting/grooming, animal handling, dairy cattle welfare, dairy nutrition, milk quality and more! When: Saturday, April 27, 2019. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with program beginning at 9:00 a.m. Program concludes at 4:00 p.m. Cost: Pre-registration by April 5, $6.00 or $10.00 at the door Where: Canfield Fairgrounds (Mahoning County), Canfield, OH

Save the Date & Things to Keep in Mind: 2019 4-H Poster Contest The poster contest is organized by the Silver Claws 4-H Club advisors and is open to ALL 4-H members. Posters are to be informational/educational of the animal species the 4-H member exhibits. Posters are to be 22X28 in. in size and displayed horizontally. There are three divisions: Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Posters are to be turned in between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the Trumbull County Fair to the Silver Claws’ Advisors (cat/rabbit area). Posters are then hung in 4-H Block Building for fair goers to read and view! 2019 4-H Public Speaking Contest When: Sunday, July 14 @ 1:00 pm in the 4-H Block Building.

RIBBON ORDERS Jr. Fair ribbon orders will be distributed April 1st to species committees. The Jr. Fair Board has requested that ribbon

orders be turned in no later than Friday, April 19th to Committee Chair, Callae Moody. Junior Fair Board members

are trying to be more proactive with ordering and ribbon organization, so let’s do our part in helping them achieve their

goal!

JR. FAIR KING & QUEEN CONTEST Applications for the Jr. Fair King & Queen Contest are now

available on the Trumbull County Fair’s website at: http://trumbullcountyfair.com/entry-forms-rules/. Note: This royalty

competition differs from the 4-H Royal Court Competition. Applications are due by May 1st to Leeoria Willis (please contact

Leeoria directly for address at [email protected]). Interviews will be held on Sunday, June 2nd.

GRAND MARCH/PARADE OF COLORS AT THE FAIR

The Grand March will be held Tuesday, July 9 at 5:30 p.m. All clubs and species/project areas are invited to join! Awards will be given in

How Can I Organize my 4-H Experiences & Opportunities? A 4-H Career Record Book is available for club members to document and track their achievements over the course of their 4-H journey. Each year has its own section. This book was created by Hocking County and is perfect to assist with filling out Ohio 4-H State Achievement Records or for scholarships! I would recommend placing the record book in a 3-ring binder or folder for safe keeping. If you are interested, please visit the Hocking County website at www.hocking.osu.edu under the 4-H Youth Development tab 4-H Forms and Applications.

On March 9, 2019, the Ohio 4-H Conference Took place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus,

OH. We had 16 youth and adult volunteers represent Trumbull County! 4-H Volunteers included: Ginny Eltman,

Jill Halstead, Hannah Shafer, Seth Steward, Jennifer Svensson, Melissa Rose and Tracey Wagner. 4-H

Members included: Kiara DiPietro, McKenzie Dyson, Sierra Kaster, MicKayla Lichty, Amanda McCauley, Cathy McCauley, Josie Wagner, Emma Wylie, and Leeoria Willis.

The Ohio 4-H Conference provides educational and hands-on learning opportunities for both youth and

volunteers. It also serves as a networking event for all of 4-H across the state of Ohio. I hope everyone had a great

experience and I encourage you to attend in 2020!

Trumbull Co. 4-H’ers Attend Proclamation Day at Commissioners Meeting on March 6th

On March 6th, 15 Trumbull County 4-H members had the opportunity to attend Proclamation Day at the Trumbull County Commissioners Meeting. Family, 4-H volunteers and Ohio State University Extension staff members were also present. Our young 4-H leaders never disappoint sharing about their 4-H experiences and passion they have for their projects!

4-H members in attendance: Cody Bartholomew, Sydney Collins, Kiara DiPietro, Logan Easterday, Courtney Hubbard, Rayna Lambert, Callae Moody, Milenka Moody, Ella Moss, Izzy Petrilla, Teagan

Pierce, Andrew Totten, Kiersten Tricker and Leeoria Willis.

These members were excellent role models throughout our program! Some even shared a short speech about the impact 4-H has had on their lives. Thank you all for your continued support of our 4-H program and thank you to Trumbull County Commissioners Mr. Frank Fuda, Mr. Mauro Cantalamessa, and Mr. Daniel Polivka for allowing us to spend the morning with you! Let's continue to “Grow 4-H” in Trumbull County!
