Mission: OhioDance is a statewide organization that inclusively supports the diverse and vibrant practice of dance.

The goals: Recognize, advocate and communicate the personal, social and educational value of dance for all Ohio-ans; serve as a centralized source of relevant and current information and resources for diverse statewide constit-uencies; promote standards of excellence and opportunities in the field of dance; and showcase the richness and diversity of dance by facilitating presentation opportunities.

Overview: OhioDance represents a broad statewide dance constituency. It serves professional companies and dancers, college/university dance departments, dance studios, school and community dance programs, and dance supporters. It serves as the primary networking opportunity for diverse dance organizations and individuals throughout the state through a quarterly newsletter, a directory and resource guide, workshops, festivals, round-tables, performance opportunities, and a website. In addition to these informational and educational services, it provides members with fiscal agency services and representation in state and national arts activities. The orga-nization is committed to educating Ohioans about dance and dance education, as well as facilitating advocacy activities.

The continued vitality of any area of artistic expression depends in part on the infusion of new people and new ideas. It is important that new, creative achievements receive public exposure. The OhioDance Board of Trustees consists of twenty-eight members statewide. Trustees work on outreach and education in their area of the state. They offer performances and workshops exposing the communities to the art of dance. OhioDance addresses the spirit of coming together in the name of art, community, and education.

OD collaborates with the community to offer regional roundtables and performance op-portunities. OD and GCAC partner as part of the OPPArt series, offering workshops to the community. OD partners with the Statehouse to present dance for summer Fridays series at the Ohio Statehouse.

OhioDance is the representative for dance at the state level. In partnership with such organizations as the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education and Ohio Citizens for the Arts, OhioDance creates a strong voice for dance in education and legislation.

The synergies of the organization support the activities and careers of countless people in the dance community, and by extension improve the quality of life in their communities. OhioDance is a socially concerned community organization devoted to creating a better world by bridging the gap between art and lives of ordinary people.

OhioDance has a commitment to dance as a fundamental expression of people of all cultures. OhioDance at its very heart is about supporting the impulses that make us dance in the first place: cultural or personal expression, establishing and exploring relationships, experiencing life expansively and fully.

Program PhilosophyThe Department of Dance offers curricular programs that emphasize the study of contemporary modern dance. All programs share an approach that views dance as a humanistic art-discipline and performance as the central mode of learning. With coursework in modern dance and ballet technique, movement fundamentals, performance/repertory, choreography, music for dance, Labanotation, dance history, dance education, world dance forms, African-based dance forms, and lighting, this program is designed to expand the dimensions of the dance experience for each student and provide them with substantial knowledge about the field and a vision of where they are in relation to it.

Program PhilosophyThe Theatre and Dance program at Ohio Wesleyanencourages students, from the first year, todiscover resources within themselves. In thecontext of the liberal arts, we offer professionaltraining in the traditional areas of theatre historyand literature, acting, directing, production design, technology, stage management, arts management, and dance. Our program balances the practical with the theoretical. Our students confront the realities of per-formance; they act and learn how to act; they direct and learn directing; they design and learn practical creativity; they manage and learn effective communication; they dance and learn to master grace, motion, and design. Most important, they work daily with strong faculty who encourage the combination ofsolid academic discipline with practical andprofessional theare experience. Every member of our faculty is a working professional. Orchesis Dance Concert, performed on campus since the late 1940s, is an annual production of the Department of Theatre and Dance. It traditionally features pieces created andperformed by students with participation by guest professional dancers.
