Hydrocarbon is a very limited resource which is all driven by the industry. Unproductive of non-productive fields of yesteryears have become productive fields today. The fluctuation in global crude price compels many of the fields, which deem to be misfit and nonproductive, have moved upward to marginal to productive fields.

Mr. Juju MathewHead – Subsea Systems L&T Hydrocarbon Upstream, Larsen & Toubro Ltd,

Monetising a gas resource is more difficult than an oil resource. As the gas demand is increasing through out the world, it is imperative to consider how to market the gas from the uptake point in order to understand the marketing strategy as well as the understanding of the Henry Hub prices of the gas.

Dr. Anirbid SircarDirector - School of Petroleum Technology, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University

The age of easy oil is over, today Onshore has fairly well explored most of the places world over. Thus we have to go further and further away from our comfort zone to find meaningful oil & gas resources. Deepwater has been one new frontier which has now an established area more than a decade or so.

Mr. Kalyan MukherjeeSenior Manager (Business Development & MIS) Bharat PetroResources Limited.

What we see today in India, most of the oil & gas reserves are mature fields and world over the scenario is same. However, the majority of the production will come from these mature fields. Hence the challenge is that how to improve the recovery efficiency from such fields.

New Renewable Energy and Application of Concentrated Solar Thermal

Solar boiler can be used for any industry…Overall it is not about the chemical industry particularly, but about Heat! Thus steam generated through solar is as much applicable to chemical industry as to any other industry. Or so is hot oil or hot air….In India about 50 companies are already using such boilers.

Dr. Shireesh KedareProfessor and Researcher, IIT B, Mumbai

Intense competition is limited the growth of potential IPPs... States – namely Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, have fixed a tariff of about Rs 6.5/unit, which is not sustainable on standalone basis, and you need accelerated benefits to make this viable at this price… This tariff is significantly lower than Rs 9-9.4/unit, which we believe is required for equity IRR of 16% (for IPPs). However, benefits of accelerated depreciation allow non IPPs to bid lower by Rs. 2-2.5/unit. Therefore, rising competition from players availing accelerated depreciation would significantly slow down expansion plans of IPPs.

Some elements are crucial for the success of any nuclear programme based on imported reactors; first you should be able to have an ecosystem of manufacturing which can support the equipment supplies, hardware, because each reactor will run for sixty years…this is manufacturing challenge. Second, you need services, the existing nuclear power programme – of roughly 500 MW has nearly 20 to 30 thousands expert directly involved in running these programme and offering services to this…image the requirement with another 10000 MW capacity that is to be added through imported reactor.

Mr. Rajendra ShrivastavaMD (Nuclear Business), Alstom

A country may have indigenous technology or technology capability, its expert may be capable of designing plants with greater safety, the country may have the funds to build the plant and generate much needed electricity, but without public trust it becomes increasingly difficult to continue the operations in existing plans and find sites for building new ones.

Dr. L V KrishnanFormer Director (Safety Research), IGCAR, Kalpakkam

Protecting people – individually and collectively, and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation is the fundamental safety objective for nuclear power station, and these objectives must apply for all stages over the lifetime of a facility including planning, siting, design, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning.

Mr. R K SinghHead Media Relations and Public Awareness Section, BARC and Treasurer, Indian Nuclear Society

Public funds for RE Development can be raised by levying tax on per unit power consumed generated by conventional sources of power generation. These funds can be utilised for leading low interest debts to the investor in RE projects for their secondary debt requirements. These funds can also be used as guarantee for project registering under REC mechanism unable to get debt. Commercial banks can conduct due-diligence to identify project viability.”

Mr. Rajesh K MendirattaDirector (BD), IEX

Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are variable due to changes in the amount of available wind and sunlight and uncertain due to the vagaries of the weather. Integration of large amounts of variable renewable generation can pose challenges for the electricity grid.

Enertech Conference 2014

PANEL DISCUSSION

The EnerTECH World Expo 2014 was concluded with a comprehensive panel discussion by eminent speakers from the Indian Energy industry.

The panellists discussed on the current Indian coal production, the issue & challenges of coal blending for power generation, issues of allocation & linkage of coal, coal price and its impact on power sector, etc.

Opening a mine is a time consuming process… It is capital intensive and getting environmental clearance is another hurdle… the entire process of mining is not as easy as it was earlier…there is gap between demand and supply…. And import is compulsion.

Mr. P K MishraGeneral Manager, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd

Coal industry’s performance has also increased. We produced around 450 mn tonne of coal last year; however, it has not been able to keep pace with the increasing demand. As against around 20 per cent growth in PLF and installed capacity, coal product has gone up just by 4.1 per cent. There is indeed a big gap.

Mr. D K DubeyGeneral Manager, NSPCL

“Fluidized bed combustion (FBC) is a combustion technology - used to burn solid fuels - is really a futuristic technology. And it can address many of the prevalent issues including the blending issue. In this technology the temperature ranges between 850 to 900 degree celsius and combustion takes place under turbulent conditions…any sort of fuel can be fired with this technology…”

In future business model may change as gas is expected to play a major role in the hydrocarbon sector and hydrogen may play a significant role – threat is at the environment front.

Mr. L N GuptaSecretary , Oil Industry Development Board , Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India

I complement the organisers for taking the theme - Emerging Trends & Technologies in Refining - as the two points will play a pivotal role in taking care of the cost of power and address issues related to environment and climate change.

Mr. A K GuptaExecutive Director (Engineering), NTPC

Today we are faced with major demand of power and on the other hand fierce shortage of fuel and environmental constraints, energy security & efficiency are two issues are most relevant in current energy scenario in India.

Mr. S N MaitiExecutive Director (Power & Technical Services), BHEL

Energy security and efficiency are two key elements for the systematic growth of a country. And the diversified fuel mix is needed as well as robust infrastructure for transmission & distribution system would also require for achieving energy security and efficiency of a developing country like India

Mr. Patrick LedermannManaging Director, Alstom India

Most of refining capacity expansions has taken place in Asia Pacific, while the capacities have declined in US, Europe, Australia & Japan. This is a good opportunity for us to become a refining hub and enjoy the advantage of being present in the area of high demand market.

Mr. R K MehraExecutive Director, International Trade Shipping and Risk Management, BPCL

Biomass – at the beginning of the civilization, this served as a source of energy, then we shifted to carbon and later to hydrocarbon - and the future of fuel will lie on hydrogen - we have come full circle.

(L to R): Ms Mitra Motaghi, Business Development Manager, KBR Technology; Dr Reinhart Vogel, Managing Director, Linde Engineering India Pvt Ltd; Mr B P Das, Executive Director (Refining Technologies), R&D Centre, IOCL; and Mr Shrikant Vaidya, Deputy General manager (Technical Services), Panipat Refinery & Petrochemicals Complex, IOCL

In future business model may change as gas is expected to play a major role in the hydrocarbon sector and hydrogen may play a significant role – threat is at the environment front.

Dr Reinhart VogelManaging Director, Linde Engineering India Pvt Ltd

The refiners are facing the continuous challenge of deteriorating crude quality and higher crude prices. Decliing demand of furnace oil has compelled the demand of efficient technology for conversion of residue feedstocks.

Mr B P DasExecutive Director (Refining Technologies), R&D Centre, IOCL

For refining margins to be above benchmark refining margin, technological interventions would be required for meeting product quality with minimum hydrogen consumption, processing heavy crudes, optimized refinery operating costs, emission control and exploring ways to reduce fresh water consumptions.

With product quality requirements getting increasingly stringent, the markets for hydrocarbon residue streams are disappearing with a significant increase in distillate demand. The high C/H feedstocks are available and are lower in cost.

Ms. Mitra MotaghiBusiness Development Manager, KBR Technology

Faced with major changes to environmental legislation and under increasing pressure to curb costs, the refinery and downstream petrochemicals industry requires robust water management solution in their units.

Mr. Ajay PopatDirector, Ion Exchange Waterleau Ltd

As the increased CAPEX & OPEX are straining the refining margins, the refiners are compelled to look at petrochemical integration for addition of value added specialty products widening the product slate, complete integration of refinery aromatics & petrochemical complex with super site concept to sustain global competitiveness.

The challenge for quality upgradation in refinery could crack by robust technology upgradation which should be cheap and will give a lower sulphur product both in gasoline as well as gas oil – catalyst plays an important role in this direction.

Mr. P P UpadhyaManaging Director, Mangalore Refining & Petrochemical Ltd

India is heavily dependent on imported crude oil - probably both a problem and an opportunity for Refiners. Because it gives refiners the opportunity to optimise their operations and relatively high natural gas prices certainly by comparison to the US create an issue from fuel supply as well as hydrogen cost.

Dr. Simon HobbsGlobal R&D Director, UOP LLC

With the changing dynamics of energy mix, there would be focused on hydro developing of new catalyst for hydro-cracking of residues, plant derived bio-oils and vegetable oils, even lipids and fats for making renewable hydrocarbon fuels.

Dr. Anil K Sinha Principal Scientist - Head Hydroprocessing Area CCPD, Indian Institute of Petroleum

Biomass refinery in India seems to be doubtful because in our country we cannot create a food scarcity and wood scarcity. But I am convinced that the city waste & some of the crop residue may really play a crucial role in establishing biomass refinery in the country.

Refining & Petrochemical Synergy

Catalyst engineering along with discovery & development tools is the key for creating differentiated business value.

Dr. Laxmi NarsimhanGeneral Manager – Centre for Novel Catalytic Materials –Shell Global

Synergy between refinery and petrochemical is seen as a way of improving the profitability of both refining and petrochemical. Traditionally the petrochemical complexes have not been integrated with the refinery, resulted in loss of valuable synergy between the two sectors. Such integration also enables to share infrastructure utilities and provides hydrogen balance management which significantly improves the profitability and GRM of the refinery.

Mr .Anil SarinManaging Director, Lummus Technology

It has seen that petcoke and coal gasification using E-Gas technology are economic alternatives to imported LNG for hydrogen, power and petrochemicals production.

Mr. Phil Amick Director, Gasification Business Development, CB&I – Houston

Substantial demand growth for energy & clean fuels and Government / Environmental regulations for lighter and low sulphur fuels mandate for revamping existing hydrogen plant to accord with the stricter legislations and for adding more hydrogen.

Mr. Kishor SonawaneManager – Business Development, Uhde India Pvt Ltd

Potential synergies between Refinery and Petrochemicals should be studied upfront new projects to increase profitability and flexibility to evolving market conditions.
