MONCAT™ products are silica supported nickel catalysts manufactured by a particular Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) technology and subsequent embedding in a solid fat by a droplet technology. They are free of water, easy to handle and feature excellent conversion rates combined with high yields towards the targeted products. Sold as hydrogenation catalysts for oils and fats (OFCs) in every major vegetable oil producing and/or processing country in the world, they are used successfully in the manufacture of soaps, oleo chemicals, vanaspati ghee, margarine, stearic acid, hydrogenated castor oil, and others. Special grades of MONCAT™ catalysts are available for different hydrogenation reactions of edible and non-edible oils alike.

Our catalysts are the results out of profound technical know-how in combination with comprehensive understanding of market and customer needs, based on close communication and cooperation. Excellent, timely service, offered to customers and users, compliments the MONCAT™ portfolio.
All of our standard products are proprietary to Evonik, are produced on commercial scale and can hence be readily supplied. However, it is important to know that Evonik’s proprietary product and technology portfolio is broader and can also be accessed via a project business model to address your special needs and improve your production process.
MONCAT™, in other words, is more than a symbol of excellent performance – it also stands for continuous development in close collabora-tion with our customers.
We send samples in plastic bottles (up to 500 g) and 1 kg aluminum containers. Larger samples can be obtained on request.

Humans’ use of oils and fats has become firmly established over the last few millennia, taking a variety of forms using advanced technologies. Today we use oils, fats, and oil derivatives in our everyday lives in a wide variety of ways — either directly as food or healthcare products, or indirectly in industrial applications by producing products that meet countless consumer needs. The primary sources of vegetable oils are fruits, nuts, and seeds, which are used for producing sunflower oil, palm oil, coconut oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, peanut oil, and castor oil. Other oils include those extracted from the germ of corn or rice. Specific geographic, climatic, and environmental conditions are responsible for concentrating oil production in specific regions on earth. Large quantities of palm oil are obtained from equatorial nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Castor oil, on the other hand, comes from dry regions in India, China, and Africa while soybean oil is produced primarily in South America. Oils and fats are also obtained from animal sources — a major portion of this comes from meat, fish, and dairy products.
Based on the suitability of oil for human consumption; oil is classified as edible and non-edible.
Introduction to Oils, Fats & Oleochemicals

Edible Oil HydrogenationEdible oils hydrogenation is a special type of multiple CC double bond. Edible oils are mainly vegetable oils which have been subjected to several processes to remove undesirable constituents. In order to make them suitable for human consumption, most edible oils are subjected to refining processes, such as neutralization, bleaching and deodorization. Fatty acid chains in oils (chemically triglycerides) which have double bonds are susceptible to attack by atmospheric oxygen, resulting in rancid odor, which is not acceptable to consumers. Hence, to restrict deterioration of oil, it is necessary to minimize the number of double bonds. Hydrogenation is a critical
step in this process whereby the oils are converted to saturated compounds with the desired properties. Furthermore hydrogenation of various oils like palm oil, soya bean oil, canola oil, mustard oil etc. changes the melting point of the triglycerides to the optimal level in food applications. In today’s world, hydrogenation of oils and fats, requiring special catalyts, is carried out using supported nickel as the most appropriate catalyst to decrease the unsaturation which offers the advantage of “higher performance/price ratio”, such as MONCATTM 2021 is doing reliably.

Hydrogenated edible oil applications:• Shortening for pastry-making industry (puff pastry – cake shortening, pastries)• Ingredients in confectionery i.e. compatible with cocoa butter, chocolate coating• Hardstock for Ghee (Vanaspati) production• Constituent of spreadable butter• Partial or brush hydrogenation to use as salad oil or low trans fats (hydrogenated oil blended with liquid oil)
16 17
Applications for hydrogenated non-edible oils:• Hydroxystearic acid widely used in manufacturing of lubricants, cosmetics etc. • Stearic acid utilized in the manufacture of rubber tires and other molded rubber products.• Stearic acid along with hydrogenated castor derivative provided for the manufacture of textile softeners for textile sizing.• Stearic acid used in the form of metal stearates for metal surface treatment/finishing and to coat the metals used in fireworks to prevent oxidation.
Non-edible Oil HydrogenationHydrogenation of C-18 unsaturated fatty acids (with isomers such as oleic, linoleic or linolenic) results in manufacture of stearic acid which has large & numerous industrial applications. Hydroxystearic acid (HSA) is obtained from castor oil hydrogenation and is found in a variety of industrial processes in today’s world.
Stearic acid manufacturers use selective nickel catalysts for complete hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids. Stearic acid with a negligible degree of unsaturation (I.V. < 0.5), offers stability to the products which are being used in high temperature applications.
Fatty alcohol is made from stearic acid and is widely used in the production of detergents, soaps, shampoos, shaving creams etc.

Base Metal Recovery & Recycling (spent nickel catalysts have value)In alignment with our commitment towards the environment Evonik has a dedicated facility for recovering base metals from spent catalyst. Evonik is accredited and certified for the total recycling of hazardous waste by utilizing a certified process.
We process spent nickel catalysts used in the processing of, for example oils and fats, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, polyols, agrochemicals and petrochemicals.
This process has the following benefits:
• Evonik purchases your nickel containing spent catalysts• Specializes in the management of inorganic wastes containing hazardous materials• Resource efficient; the metals recovered will not need to be mined• No extra cost to dispose of the spent nickel catalysts
With this recycling service, Evonik has a decisive advantage, providing customers with the catalytic technologies required to make your production as efficient as possible. We assume the disposal worries of spent nickel catalysts which are typically classified as hazardous waste.

Characteristics of a project
• A confidentiality agreement protects each party’s intellectual property rights and allows a free flow of information• A collaboration agreement defines the scope and goals of the project and the commercial conditions• By definition, all projects run on an exclusive basis
How you benefit from custom catalyst projects:
• Allows you to concentrate on your core business • Provides you with a skilled partner for developing and scaling up of catalysts• Access to sophisticated catalyst manufacturing equipment• Offers greater flexibility in the use of catalyst types and quantities• De-bottleneck your own catalyst production
Over the last two decades the demand for custom specific catalysts has increased dramatically. When the need for a custom catalyst arises, we leverage our core competencies in the context of a project. We are creative in finding new solutions and are open to ideas that are not obvious at first glance. Evonik specializes in scaling up and producing sophisticated catalysts on a commercial scale. A robust and stable production process is crucial to all catalysts, and we know how to design and operate this. The best catalyst in the laboratory is of no use if it cannot be produced in commercial quantities. Reliable, delivering on our promises, our profes-sional project management with cross-functional teams makes the project flow smoothly. We are never complacent about our achievements and continually strive for constant self- renewal in our business processes for your benefit.
