En el proyecto Kids [Niños],
Jorge Fuembuena [Zaragoza,
España, 1979] construye
un ensayo fotográfico
que, a partir de diversas
localizaciones, investiga
el entorno y las acciones
del hombre sobre el paisaje.
«La serie explora el
paisaje, se articula
con niños (hijos de
los habitantes de la
República de Islandia) que,
descubren el territorio,
lo pueblan y lo habitan;
son acaso una metáfora
de la inestabilidad
y vulnerabilidad que
acecha al hombre ante
la naturaleza, o una
estampa reconciliadora.
Los niños adquieren un
gran simbolismo en este
contexto: sus actitudes
tranquilas e inocentes les
hacen parecer parte del
paisaje que, sin dejar de
ser sublime e imperante,
se confi
gura en torno a
ellos, situándoles en medio
de un ambiguo equilibrio
entre su inocencia y la
fuerza de la naturaleza».
In his project, Kids,
Jorge Fuembuena (Zaragoza,
Spain, 1979) constructs a
photographic essay that
looks into the environment
and the effect of human
actions on the landscape
of different locations.
“The series explores
the landscape and is
articulated with children
(the offspring of the
inhabitants of the Republic
of Iceland), who discover
the territory, populate it
and live in it. They are a
metaphor of the instability
and vulnerability that
mankind faces in relation
to nature, and, at the same
time, a reconciliatory
image. Within this context
the children are charged
with a great deal of
symbolism: their calm
and innocent disposition
makes them seem part of the
landscape that, without
ever losing its sublime
and commanding nature,
is fashioned around them,
placing them at the center
of a precarious balance
between their innocence and
the force of nature.”

PORTFOLIO PHE
Yolanda del Amo (Madrid,
España, 1967) es la autora
del proyecto Archipiélago,
iniciado en 2004, que
documenta una serie de
islas, separadas entre sí
por la soledad propia de
cada una e íntimamente
conectadas por el hecho
objetivo de pertenecer
al mismo mundo.
«Cada isla aparece
representada por un número
reducido de personas,
observadas desde distintos
puntos de vista que
tienden a destacarlas como
individuos particulares.
Pero cada individualidad
comparte el espacio con
otras individualidades,
y la relación entre
ellos acaba defi
niéndose
por el doble paisaje,
interior y exterior,
donde se encuentran.
Más allá de la dimensión
narrativa sugerida por la
inevitable tensión que
supone compartir un mismo
encuadre, las islas del
Archipiélago retratan
también una serie de
espacios proporcionados
por la sociedad: salones,
jardines, patios, terrazas
o parques. La construcción
social se amplía, refleja
—www.yolandadelamo.com
y multiplica en la
construcción fotográfica a
través de un diálogo mutuo;
la raza, la edad, el género,
el ambiente social influyen
en el espacio retratado,
que, a su vez, encuentra su
significado y su carácter
en los rasgos propios y
diversos de quienes habitan
cada isla de Archipiélago».
Yolanda del Amo (Madrid,
Spain, 1967) presented
her photographic work,
Archipelago, started in 2004,
which documents a series
of islands distanced from
one another by their own
isolation and intimately
connected by the objective
fact that they belong to
the same world.
“Each island is represented
by a reduced number of
people, all of them observed
from a different point
of view that tends to
highlight them as particular
individuals. But each
individual shares the space
with other individual, and
the relationship among
them is fi
nally defi
ned by
the double landscape where
they meet, both inside and
outside. Beyond the narrative
dimension suggested by the
inevitable tension that
sharing the same framing
involves, the islands of
Archipiélago also portray
a series of spaces provided
by society: halls and garden
yards, terraces or parks.
The social construction
is widened, reflected
and multiplied in the
photographic construction,
through a mutual dialogue;
race, age, gender and social
atmosphere influence the
space depicted, which
finds, at the same time,
its significance and
character in the diverse
and characteristic features
of the inhabitants of each
island in Archipiélago.”

Tracey Mancenido (Nueva

y James Frank Tribble
(Carolina del Norte,
Estados Unidos, 1983) han
creado el proyecto
Hurry Up & Wait (Darse
prisa y esperar ), una
meditación poética y
personal que explora la
industria estadounidense
del transporte en camión
y arroja luz sobre ella.
«Teniendo siempre presente
la larga tradición de la
fotografía de carretera,
asumimos el doble papel de
voyeur y objeto y trabajamos
durante más de un año como
camioneros, entre 2008 y
2009. Este retrato único
de Estados Unidos explora
una forma de vida que es
parte integral de un país
cuya cultura gira en torno
al comercio y el consumo.
Las imágenes de esta
colección (de personas,
paisajes y objetos) están
profundamente relacionadas
unas con otras desde un
punto de vista conceptual
y en ellas resuenan fuertes
connotaciones culturales
y sociales de la clase

contemporánea. En vez
de regodearse en las
nociones estereotípicas
acerca de los camioneros,

las composiciones fi

transforman el polvo y la
suciedad tan comúnmente
asociados con esta
subcultura en una suerte de
meditación provocadoramente
serena sobre la vida
entre cargas y portes.
Gasolineras, áreas de
descanso, conductores,
señales de tráfico y las
manchas de aceite sobre
el asfalto, rara vez

detalles nimios que jalonan
el día a día de la vida en

Tracey Mancenido (NY, USA,
1980) and James Frank Tribble
(Columbia, NC, USA, 1983) have
created the project Hurry Up
& Wait, a personal and
poetic meditation exploring
and illuminating the
American trucking industry.
“With the long tradition
of road photography, ever
present in mind, we assumed
the role of both voyeur
and subject, dedicating
over a year as employed
truck drivers from 2008-
2009. This unique portrait
of America examines a way
of life integral to the
country’s commerce-driven,
consuming culture. The
ongoing collection of images
– of people, landscapes
and objects – are deeply
and conceptually related
to one another, resonating
as a cultural and social
reference to contemporary
working America. Instead of
entertaining stereotypical
notions about truck drivers,
compositions transform the
grit and grime ubiquitously
associated to the subculture
into provocatively quiet
meditations of life between
loads. From gas stations,
truck stops, truckers, signs,
and the overlooked oil slick
on the ground, they highlight
the quotidian minutiae of
life on the road.”

Mikel Bastida (Bilbao,

de War Theatre [Escenarios
de guerra ], una serie
fotográfica que constituye
una búsqueda de esos
paisajes que la historia ha
convertido en literarios.
«Durante los dos últimos
años, he recorrido Europa
Occidental y Oriental
recreando la fi
gura
de un fotógrafo de la
Segunda Guerra Mundial en
diversas reconstrucciones
históricas, donde grupos
de reenactors representan
diferentes episodios
bélicos en escenarios
históricos y campos de
batalla fi
cticios. Son
escenarios construidos a
partir de las diferentes
representaciones de la
guerra, desde el cine
hasta las fotografías de
época, y convertidos en
enormes decorados donde la
recreación y la simulación
dejan al descubierto un
imaginario colectivo. El
naturalismo fotográfico, la
defi
nición de la realidad
desde la cámara, no permite
personajes fi
cticios, aunque
sí imaginarios. Figuras
reales transformadas en
protagonistas de una falsa
épica, arquetipos de un
relato que ha impregnado
toda la cultura popular
hasta conseguir que la
realidad tan solo interese
cuando es mitificada
por su representación.
Es mi mirada, la mirada
del fotógrafo quien crea
este universo a través
de la cámara. Espacios y
personajes que únicamente
existen en el mínimo
instante fotográfico,
fragmentos de una realidad
que anhela enmascarar su
naturaleza efímera al ser
representada».

Mikel Bastida (Bilbao,

War Theatre a photographic
series that is a search for
those battlefi

history has turned into
literary landscapes.
“During the last two years I
have traveled across Western
and Eastern Europe recreating
the fi
gure of a World War
II photographer. I have
covered several historical
recreations where groups of
reenactors have performed
different war episodes in
both historical scenarios
and fi

Scenarios made out of
different representations of
WWII – from fi
lms to vintage
photographs – which turn into
huge sets where simulation
exposes a collective imagery.
Photographic naturalism, the
defi
nition of reality from
behind the camera, does not
allow fi
ctitious characters
but imaginary ones. Real
figures transformed into the
main character of a false epic
representation. Archetypes
of a story that has permeated
our popular culture to the
point of making reality
interesting only when
it is mystified by its
representation. It is my eye,
the eye of the photographer,
which creates this universe
through the camera. Spaces
and characters that only
exist during a photographic
moment, fragments of a
reality that aspires to mask
its ephemeral nature when it
is represented.”

Dossier
— 027
we have reached the fourth edition of the PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values. Every year I remain in awe of the amount and variety of stories we receive from around the world. This year we have reviewed more than 700 entries from over 50 countries, ranging from Azerbaijan to Colombia.
The world around us is raged by bloody wars, violent revolutions, environmental dramas, personal abuses. Every tragedy is closer to us because of the velocity and reality of digital communication. And every disaster seems like it is happening in our backyard – and at times it actually is.
The strengths of humanity are its values. resilience, justice, empathy, solidarity, love. we might not see them depicted in the news on a daily basis, but in the flow of life around us samples of positive actions abound. The everyday is the hidden stage where human values play out.
It is not a surprise that, together with the reporting from the world’s hot zones, and the important news value of social and war reportage, we have noticed a growing presence of little stories that focus on intimate tales of daily life. Strong, moving and powerful narratives that put the human and its values at the center of it all.. This year’s finalists are proof of this.
The winner of the 2011 PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values is jan Cága, with his luminous view on the heroism of disabled athletes. Love and strength connect the stories by Sarah Carp and rosario Heer, dealing with sickness and family; and family ties and values are also key to dmitry Markov’s story on orphans who have chosen each other as brothers, and Simone donati’s “angels” who have decided for an alternative life, away from the fakeness of urban context. A conscious choice is also that of Carlo Bevilacqua’s modern age hermits, seeking peace and truth on their solitary path. A state, that of loneliness, which is not always a choice, as for the women prisoners in Brazil, narrated by jackie dewe Mathews. On a different note, Maija Tammi brings us softly and smilingly into the personal and social life of a woman just about 4 feet tall. Finally, the atrocities of the world peek at us through the stories depicted by Maysun’s portraits of women witnesses of the Burmese military abuses, and the detailed journalistic recounting by Giancarlo Ceraudo of Argentina’s dictatorship and its consequences, still taking its toil today.
Thanks to all the participants. And a grand thank you to the jury of the 2011 edition of the PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values: Frédérique Babin, editor and photography publisher of the French publication Le Monde Magazine, Caroline Hunter, deputy Picture Editor of Guardian Weekend in London, and Nissan Pérez, photography curator in the Museum of Israel, who together with me have carefully considered the entries and thoughtfully chosen the finalists.
Faced with legitimate criticism during the latter half of the XX century, photography shifted from a medium often used to explore, explain and express the foreign and unfamiliar, to one used to examine, reveal and define oneself. in 1984, Andy Grundberg noted such a shift occurring specifically within the documentary practice, “…towards recording the ‘i’ instead of the ‘Other’….” this exhibition celebrates contemporary practitioners who are cleverly redressing this balance by turning direct encounters with the “Other” into forms of self-exploration, self-revelation and subtle autobiography, equally emphasizing what is in front of the camera – the “Other” – and what is behind it – the “i” curated by Aaron Schuman.[Until nOVeMbeR 27]

Michelle Sank’s practice is concerned with the notion of encountering, collecting, and retelling. She is interested in creating sociological landscapes, interplays of human form and location that are significant in their visual, sociological, cultural and physiological nuances. the imagery presented in The Submerged was produced within mid-Wales, in the hilly and costal area around Aberystwyth, a town that exists at the end of a railway line.
