O.K., I Confess John Lyding (LM #126)

The Perfins Bulletin of February 2008 contains and article by Bob Szymanski entitled "Personal Perfins (and Friends) Survey Results". The first thing I need to do is apologize to Bob for not having participated in his survey. Secondly, I confess that I am responsible for some of the "(and Friends)" portion of the title. In fact, the Perfins Bulletin of January 1996 told some of my travails in obtaining my anchor perforator (punches US pattern D61IP; Fig. 1). However, prior to obtaining that device (and apparently after) I utilized some check punches from my antique office gadgets collection. In addition to three check punches that accumulation consists of a number of company seals, hole punchers, inkwells, pen stands, etc. A Cummins and an Ace machine document marker are also part of that accumulation. I had hoped to convert these to stamp perforators, but that was way beyond my capabilities.

Figure 1. Des 61lP I admit that for a time, I did use transportation coils supplemented by older commemoratives for postage. Bob's article shows a #1 punch which has a partial postmark "MD" and "212" (Fig. 2). This may be compared to the numeral" 1" from one of my check perforators. Even a casual glance shows that there is a major difference in the two “1”s. Bob's has two holes in the top row and mine has only one.

However, I really thought that it was one of my creations. Check the ZIP code to determine where it was posted. My current ZIP code is 20904 and our previous residence had code 21114. Maryland ZIP codes ending in 212 are limited to Baltimore and Govans. State ZIP codes starting with 212 range from Baltimore to Towson, all well north of where I live. But, wait a minute. Zip 21240 is the zip code of BWI Marshall Airport, which is co-located with the Maryland Department of Transportation. Since I went there frequently for early morning meetings when I was the state's Director of Driver Licensing, that is a possible explanation for the “212” in the cancel. Next I speculated that perhaps there was a broken pin on the perforator. I carefully punched the number 1 again. There appeared to be an indentation where the hole was missing. Ah, turning the device over I attempted to remove the chad. A movable cover designed to stop the chads from falling out was no longer movable. Fortunately, I was able to move it without breaking anything. The chute was packed! Using my handy stamp tongs, I dug out some of the compacted contents. It was like digging

out solid paper. The more I dug, the more there was. Finally I disassembled the device. Other than being amazed by the quality workmanship, I was greeted with a curved tube that was intended to lead the chads away from the punch. I removed this in hopes that I could see the pins. No luck, but I was able to clear all the debris from the machine. After reassembly, I carefully produced another “1”.

That leaves the 33¢ Los Angeles Class submarine stamp. If you compare the "2000" with Fig. 2 above it is obvious that I was the one, “playing around with a check canceling machine”. The misplaced last zero is caused by the stiffness in the feed mechanism of aged check perforators. In order to assist future

researchers a number of samples are provided below.

A Japanese Whatizzit Bob Szymanski (LM#145)

Pictured here are the two sides of a Japanese perfin. If you collect US and or Japanese perfins you may see the problem. The pattern is unlisted in the Japanese perfin catalog but is listed in the US perfin catalog.

The pattern is a perfect match with US pattern F223 (D+) used in the 1902 through 1918 issues by Fleitman & Company. The Japanese stamp is a Scott #96, a green 2 sen in use from 1899 through about 1913. The time periods of usage are similar so this

could be a good and previously unknown Japanese perfin. However, maybe somebody with access to the US perforator was "playing around"! Could it be that this stamp was perforated in the US for use in Japan just as several Canadian perfins were made by US perforators for use in Canada? Checklists of Rev-Perf Patterns found in Section A of the U. S. Revs-Perfins Catalog

(Undated, Circular Hole or Punched Initials, Numbers and/or Designs in United States (Federal or State) Revenue Stamps and Fiscal Documents)

Paul Mistretta (LM#111) I recently received my U. S. Rev-Perfin Catalog, drop-shipped directly from the print shop in Maine where it was printed. To simply state that I was impressed by the catalog would be (in Shakespeare’s [I think]) words) to damn it with faint praise! The result of Art’s work in bringing to its final form the efforts of Joe Miller, Chuck Spaulding, and many, many other collectors, is a spectacular and highly usable catalog of a very complex field of perfin/punch cancel collecting. Through the Rev-Perf Newsletters which Art shared for publication in The Perfins Bulletin, and which he also circulated among a wide variety of collectors of US revenue stamps, I had become familiar with the proposed overall format of the catalog. Seeing the catalog in print brought home the reality of the complexity of types of patterns to which Art has brought a very real semblance of order. If you are a collector of perfins/punch cancels in US revenue stamps, one or more sections of this catalog will become an essential tool in making sense of what you have accumulated. And, with that brief introduction, I get to the point of this submission. Below and on the next several pages I present a set of checklists for the “A” section of the rev-perf catalog. Unlike the Catalog of US Perfins (for postage stamps), it appeared necessary to create several checklists for this (and in the future, other) section(s) of the catalog based on the type of revenue stamps into which the patterns were punched; this for the benefit of those who would specialize in a single type of item or who want the pattern in each type in which it is found. The checklists below are printed in the following sequence:

• A general checklist of all patterns in this section, regardless of the origin of the stamps/documents in which they were found

• Patterns in federal items: Separate checklists sequenced alphabetically by type of revenue stamp/document in which they are found (documentary tax stamps, future delivery stamps, narcotics tax stamps, etc.)

• Patterns in state items: Separate checklists sequenced alphabetically by state and within state by type of item in which they are found.

There are 901 patterns cataloged in this section of the catalog. Each has a listing of types of item in which the pattern is known, when that information is known. Many patterns are known in several types of revenue item, other patterns are reported as known without information being available as to the type of item in which it was found. Thus the total of items in the Federal and State lists will not add up to the 901 total of known patterns Several patterns in this section are duplicated (and cross referenced) under different letters. Where this occurs, I have arbitrarily struck through one of the entries and added the comment “= ***” where the *** is the catalog number of the primary (or in some cases the first) entry of the pattern. For those of you unfamiliar with the checklist format I am using, I provide the following information based on the way I use these checklists in my own collecting. When I have a pattern in my collection that is of acceptable quality (it’s a ‘keeper’), I fill in the square next to the appropriate catalog number. If I have a pattern, but it is of less than desirable quality (a space filler), I note that fact by putting a dot in the center of the appropriate box (a slash across the box will work as well). Since I have been known to mount space fillers this dot (or slash if you prefer) tells me not to buy yet another space filer to put in this spot. Not very elegant, but it tells me what I have and what I need.

NEW ID! New EKU from the State of Ohio! New EKU to Hamburg, Germany and Europe

Every so often something appears on e-bay that has real appeal. Maybe this appeals only to me but, fortunately, everyone else passed by this cover. This is really a neat perfin cover - the kind that should instill interest in members to look for perfin

covers whenever talking with a stamp dealer or visiting a stamp show. Here is a copy of both the obverse and a cropped reverse of the Hamburg receiving cancel - shown because the 1908 date on the obverse is impossible to see clearly.

A new identification of a US pattern is always great to find and the corner ID of The Akron-Selle Company identifies (A-rated!) pattern A250.5. The pattern appears only in 1902 to 1908 issues - a truly early and not long-used pattern. The cover shows the 5 cent rate to Germany in an odd way because to the 2¢ embossed envelope is added a perfinned 2¢ stamp and 1¢ non-perfinned stamp, all clearly tied by three Jul 28,(1908) cancels. The 1908 clearly shows in the reverse receiving cancel. I collect EKU covers from each State and Territory. The previously reported Ohio EKU is Aug 8, 1908.

This cover predates by 11 days the previously listed one. As I was born and raised in Ohio, it is certainly a cherished cover with special meaning. Likewise, I have a collection of EKUs of perfin covers from the US to any foreign destination that had issued postage stamps, Hamburg qualifies as a separate and distinct stamp issuing entity for my collection. To the best of my knowledge at this time, this cover qualifies as the new EKU to Hamburg, to Germany. To makes the item sweeter yet, it is the earliest US perfin cover to the continent of Europe of which I am aware.

An extremely rare set, that rank among the most elusive of all Australian Railway Stamps. [We are aware of only two other stamps - a 6d & 1/- - that have the perfin] (Qty 7). Rare. Stieg states that 10 unused and 2 used examples are recorded. Res- AU$150.00. 519 -- WESTERN AUSTRALIA -- 1854-55 Lithographed Imperf 4d slate-blue SG 3c with "Imperial" official puncture (rare thus), margins close to large, indistinct numeral cancel in blue, Cat £950+. Ex Daneswood. Res- AU$800.00. 537 -- WESTERN AUSTRALIA -- 1905-12 Crown/A Perf 11 4d chestnut as SG 154 but perf 'OS' (BW #W37b), exceptional centring, light cds cancel, Cat $400. (ACSC notes only one example without the perfin and states "20-30 used examples are known with 'OS' puncture". While perfins are generally a "dangerous" area, we are confident that this stamp must be genuine) . The Annual PSS – Perfins Club Convention

July 29 – August 2, 2008

Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri Room reservations can be made either by phone (314-878-1500 or 800-822-3535) or by using the web to register. There is a special convention rate of $95. The rate is available for the two nights prior to, the convention itself, and one night following the convention.
