29th ANNUAL FORT MYERSRECREATION VEHICLE SHOW MOTORS

INTO LEE CIVIC CENTER Promising outdoor traveling adventure and family fun, the Fort Myers Recreation Ve-hicle Show motors into the new year at the Lee Civic Center this January 23-26, 2014, Chris Morse, president of Florida RV Trade Association- Region One, announced. T h i s year’s RV extravaganza promises to continue providing attendees the opportunity to see the latest and best camping products available to local RVers and lovers of the great outdoors offered by 14 RV dealers, Chris says. “At-tendees can view hundreds of recreation ve-hicles of all different types, sizes and prices. It also features 80 outdoor and camping sup-ply vendors,” he says. “For many years, the Fort Myers RV Show has been the top RV show in Florida and the Southeast simply be-cause of the high quality products, outstand-ing displays and cost-saving prices,” Chris explains. “I’m proud to say this emphasis on quality has enabled theshow to grow into the largest dealer-sponsored show in Florida and one of the largest RV shows in the Southeast.” The 29th Annual Fort Myers RV Show features 14 dealers from throughout Florida displaying a large selection of new 2014 rec-reation vehicles of all styles, brands and price ranges, including folding campers, gas and diesel motorhomes, travel trailers, toy haul-ers, 5th wheels, park models and van campers. Besides RVs, the show allows attendees the chance to browse 80 outdoor and camp-ing vendors displaying equipment and ac-cessories to help outfit RVers or provide information on camping throughout the na-tion. Items include new braking systems, RV insurance, specialized camping equipment and high-tech makeovers for older RVs. Shipping data based on the latest research done by the Recreation Vehicle Industry As-sociation (RVIA) this past November 2013 reveals that wholesale shipments to retailers of all RVs were reported at 21,748. This rep-resents an increase of 5.8% over the same pe-riod last year. Towable RVs improved 2.4% to 18,711 units with motorhomes climbing 32.3% to 3,037 units. Year-to-date, total shipments have grown 12.2% to 299,451 units through November 2013, the larg-

est total in six years. Shipments of all tow-able RVs have risen 9.7% to 264,019 units, while motorhome shipments have jumped up 36% to 35,432 units, both six-year bests. With the limping economy still stretch-ing consumers’ budgets, RV travel remains an affordable option. PKF’s spring 2011 Vacation Cost Comparison Study, the most recent analysis available, shows that RV trips remain the most affordable way for a family to travel because of the significant savings on air, hotel and restaurant costs, which continue to rise. The study showed that a family of four could save 27%-to-59% on vacation costs by traveling in an RV, de-pending on the type of trip taken and RV used. A two-person travel party (the typical empty-nest couple) would save 11-to-46 %. With continuing higher fuel prices, more than 80% of RV owners say their RV vaca-tions cost less than other forms of vacation. To combat rising fuel prices, RV manufac-turers have improved fuel economy through the use of high-tech composite materials that has reduced the weight of many RVs by as much as 25%. Fuel prices would need to more than double from their current level to make RVing more expensive for a family of four than other forms of travel, the PKF study showed. “For the majority of RV buyers, the inter-est on their purchase is tax deductible since it qualifies as a second home,” Chris continues. “Now is the time to buy since RV pric-es have never been lower, making the RV lifestyle surprisingly affordable.” The 29th Annual Fort Myers RV Show is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 10 AM to 4 PM on Sunday (January 23, 24, 25, 26). Admission is $8 with children under 16 free. Parking is free courtesy of the RV Trade Association. Thursday’s tickets are discounted to $6 each. To reach the Lee Civic Cen-ter, take exit 143 (State Road 78) and go east 3 miles. Go to www.frvta.org/rv-shows for more information. I have been writing this column for over 8 years and have really enjoyed the feedback that I have gotten from anglers. I want to thank Maureen Budjinski for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Penny Saver team. My column in Okeechobee The Magazine will continue, however it’s time for me to move onto other things and this will be my last column for the Penny Saver, I will see you all at the ramp.

— Cpt. Mike Shellen

It’s the time of year when cold fronts can be a weekly event. The impact from fronts varies greatly depending on the severity and how cold the water in the lake gets. Once it warms back up again and the water returns to a normal temperature the great fishing will continue. We had a couple of tough days this week when the water temps were in the 50’s. but as soon as the water warmed in the mid 60’s the bass started to chew again. Shiner fishing is great with large numbers of bass and also large bass being caught daily. The artificial bite was affected as well, several anglers I spoke with fished all day without a bite, ouch!

More temperate weather and water temperatures however will bring the

bite back. Swimming style plastics have been working well for many anglers, there is a wide variety so you will have to determine on your own what works best for you . Skinny dippers, E-Z swimmers and speed worms are a good place to start, heavy braided line is necessary to battle fish once they are hooked in heavy cover areas. The lake level is currently a foot lower than it was at this time last year, and holding around 14 foot.

Speck anglers are finding large numbers of large specks in the heavy cover areas as well as in the Kissimmee River and Government cut. Jigs and minnows will both draw strikes. Look for the specks to spawn on a future full moon phase.
