At some point in the future, Oklahoma City voters may go to the polls and vote on unresolved terms between the city

of Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma City firefighters. The ballot will present voters with the best offer made by the

firefighters and the city, and voters will be asked to select between the two best offers.

An unresolved term may be overtime hours. The city wants to exclude paid leave taken by firefighters from being

counted as worked for overtime purposes, whereas firefighters have asked for no changes to overtime hours.

Another unresolved term may be regarding the fire dispatch service that dispatches firefighters to emergencies. The

city wants to transfer dispatching functions from current firefighters to civilian employees. Whereas firefighters have

asked for no changes to the fire dispatch department.

The total dollar amount of the firefighter’s last best offer for the entire contract for this year, including wages and

benefits, is $106,766,307, which is an increase of just .54% over last year, whereas the city’s last best offer is HIGHER

at $106,807,784 and a .58% increase over last year.

Regarding overtime hours and pay, firefighters work on average 56 hours a week and are only paid for 3 hours of

overtime. This is because firefighters are in a special classification in the Fair Labor Standard Act and work 24-hour

shifts with their time calculated on a 27-day cycle. The city wants to exclude unused paid leave hours accrued by

firefighters from being counted as hours worked for overtime purposes even though firefighters are working, on

average already, 13 hours overtime every week and not being paid for it like other private-sector hourly employees.

knowledgeable in dispatching the appropriate equipment and resources to 911 fire and hazard calls than civilian

dispatchers.
