WEEK 1: OKLAHOMA VS. NEBRASKA, AT OKLAHOMA STATE

HEAD COACH MATT POTTERAfter six seasons at the helm of the Oklahoma soccer program, head coach Matt Potter has begun to see his vision for the team take shape. A proven leader and builder of successful programs, Potter arrived at OU in December 2011 with the goal of positioning the Sooners as one of the nation’s elite soccer teams.

The 2017 season saw the Sooners post a 3-13-4 record, recording shutouts in all three draws, including ending Texas’ perfect season. Junior Paige Welch earn the Big 12 Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year and Kaylee Dao was named to the All-Big 12 First Team after leading the team with four goals on the year. Fourteen Sooners were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team, with four athletes posting 4.0 GPAs.

Potter’s fifth campaign saw the Sooners march their way into the record books. The Sooners picked up their first-ever win in NCAA play with a 1-0 victory over SMU in the first round of the tournament. The victory represented its 14th of the season, the most in school history. A program-record six Sooners earned Big 12 accolades, including Rachel Ressler (first team), Liz Keester (second team), Jemma Cota (second team), Tori Bowman (second team), Paige Welch (second team) and Kristina O’Donnell (freshman team). Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade set the school standards for both single-season and career shutouts with nine and 20, respectively.

In 2015, the Sooners reached the 10-win mark for the second consecutive season and recorded their first undefeated home record in program history. Against UTSA, the Sooners scored eight goals, matching the school single-game record, while junior Caren Nelson recorded just the third hat trick in OU history.

Potter led Oklahoma to a breakthrough season in his third season at the helm of the program, returning OU to the NCAA Tournament and helping the Sooners break the 10-win mark for the first time since 2010. Potter guided five players to All-Big 12 honors: Devin Barrett (Tournament), Madeline Brem (Tournament), Abby Hodgen (Tournament), Lizzie Luallin (Newcomer) and Laura Rayfield (Newcomer, Tournament).

Potter led Oklahoma to a 7-9-4 record in his first season as head coach, the most wins by a rookie head coach in Sooner history. Senior Renae Cuellar was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, NCAA Division I All-Central Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) and captured first All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Newcomer team honors.
