Dear Fellow Members: Derby Days 2012 was glorious! For those of you who participated in one or more of the events over the four-day period, I trust you had a good time and will convey this to your fellow members. The four days started with the par 3 golf tournament played over both nines by almost 100 golfers. I had the honor to greet

golfers to the 3rd

tee (and hit an extra tee shot) and smiles were the order of the day. The golf was followed by a wonderful party at the top of the driving range, open to all members, and attended by almost 150 members. As advertised, the view of downtown Minneapolis and the sunset were fantastic. It was a cool evening and the fire was enjoyed by many especially after the sun went down.

Golf events continued with the women’s event on Friday morning and the men’s event held Friday and Saturday. While I wasn’t there at the end, I understand Bob Ernst’s “victory lap” after sinking a 30+ foot putt to win was reminiscent of Ryder Cup victory laps of the past. The golf course was in incredible shape with rumors of the greens rolling at 13 on the stimpmeter.

The Saturday night party by the pool was glorious, despite the late rain. Both the seafood boil and the mechanical bull riding experience were hits.

The Club’s staff did an outstanding job throughout. I encourage everyone to put

Derby Days 2013 on your calendar. Enjoy the photos!

Sincerely, Jim Moar

It is with sadness and sorrow that we announce the death of a longtime T&C member Mr. Harlan Newell He passed away August 4, 2012. Our deepest sympathy to Ms. Ria Newell and his entire family.

DERBY DAYS Weekend Proves Spectacular

The weekend kicked off on a Thursday with the entire golf course turned into a Par 3 course for over 100 players. The four person scramble format proved tougher than most anticipated as three under par was the top score. Congratulations to David & Monica Nassif / Kai & Senia

Tuominen for winning the 2nd

Annual Par 3 Tournament. As we moved into Friday, the ladies began their Derby Days event with a stableford point format. Patti Neir & Pat Drew beat the field by six points to claim the Ladies Derby Days Championship.

Friday afternoon began the men’s event….10 flights of four teams all competing to advance to the Shootout where they would have the opportunity to be named Derby Days Champion. In the end, Bob Ernst (partner, Tom Hughes) drained a 30 foot (net) birdie putt to clinch the Championship. Neil Davis/Matt Gollinger, Charley Stewart/Dan O’Brien, and Jim Giefer/Jack Barrett all tied for second place.

Congratulations Bob & Tom for a well played tournament and strong finish!

Pace of Play Pace of Play is a topic that comes up quite often around the club. I did a little research and found some interesting information about Pace of Play. Golf Digest did a study of their readers rating their pace versus

other golfers. They titled this survey I’m Fast, You’re Slow.”

A typical par 4 has a "time par" of 12 minutes. A par 5 should take 18 minutes and a par 3 should take nine minutes. Plus 5 minutes for a Half Way break. If you follow these suggested times the front nine should take 1 hour and 48 minutes. The back nine should take 2 hours and 3 minutes. When you add a 5 minute stop at the Half Way the full round should take 3 hours and 56 minutes. The most important thing to keep in mind regarding of

Pace of Play is to be aware of the groups around you.

If you are playing at a good pace in a four-some and you

notice a two-some waiting behind you, it is ok to let them

play through at the next opportunity.

In shotgun events your group should always be in position

directly behind the group in front of you. If you are within

one shot of the group ahead of you, your group is in the

correct position, and you are playing at the correct pace.

Q: How would you rate your own pace of play?

Fast: 57.8 percent

Average: 37.4 percent

Slow: 4.8 percent

Q: How would you rate most golfers' pace of play?

Slow: 56.2 percent

Average: 41.8 percent

Fast: 2.0 percent

ANDY GERBER - FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PRO RESULTS Men’s League Finale The 12-week Men’s League season concluded in perfect fashion as 100+ players came out to compete for team and individual honors. Congratulations to the Newbies (Jim Montalbano, Shamus O’Meara, Chris Paar, Rob Phythian and Ted Smith) for winning their first Team Championship in Men’s League. For the Individual Shootout, we took the top three players from various categories. They battled thru four holes of high pressure situations, looming darkness and a little heckling from spectators. After three holes of eliminating players, it was Chris Brandt, Joe Keeley, Dan O’Brien and Ross Bullard standing on the final hole. Ross Bullard tapped in for par to claim his first Men's League Shootout victory. Congratulations to Ross Bullard....and all who made the shootout. Full results below:

FROM THE GREENS—BILL LARSON, CGCS, TURFGRASS DIRECTOR

Greens aerification has been completed for this season. We chose to use a ¾” solid tine at a ten inch depth, something we call, “deep tining.” The holes were filled with sand to improve internal water movement and air filled porosity within the rootzone. Immediately following this treatment the greens will not perform to our typical standards, but we expect that the scars will heal within 7-10 days, and our smooth putting surfaces will return for the remainder of the season. We were also able to complete approaches and tees. As we have done the past few seasons, fairways will be done in the spring to ensure as little turf damage as possible. We are also completing another forward tee on seventeen per the approval by the Greens Committee. It is progressing nicely

and will be completed soon.

There are some big changes that have taken place recently in an effort to greatly enhance your dining experience at the Club! TCC has long been a Club of tradition and excellence and in order to carry on in that vein, we have now fully embraced the farm to table food movement. What does that mean exactly, you may ask? It is the current trend toward knowing the origins of the food you eat and how it got

from the field to your plate. In this current world of mass produced and fast foods, I for one want to know what I’m eating. I mean Pink Slime! Really guys what’s that all about? On the first of this month we will be introducing our new menu style beginning with our dinner menu. This will soon be followed by the pub and lunch menus. Our breakfast menu has run in this fashion for nearly a year now. I have also worked closely with the Dining Committee and based on member feedback and input, I have changed our menu style to focus primarily on products that are as fresh and local as possible, and are pre-sented and prepared in an innovative manner. I have heard you and I hope you enjoy the changes. Our new menu will change the first day of each month and feature the freshest seasonal ingredients we can source. I have relationships with several area farms and I’m always looking to start new ones. I am also acquainted with most of the local Club chefs and restaurant chefs in the Twin Cities and any of them will tell you this is now the smartest path to follow. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Grow your own or source ingredients grown locally with sustainable methods, care for and prepare them to enhance their natural flavors and enjoy the wonderful flavor and nutritional benefits that go along with it. Smart. This month our menu features many items grown right here on the property in our gardens as well as many selections from the local farmers market and other local vendors of fresh products. I also need to note the changes to Thursday casual dining. In the past, we have had an entire casual/comfort food menu available only on Thursday and a fresh salad bar as well. Years ago it was a big crowd draw. Those numbers have dwindled over time and as a result, we reduced that menu size about six months ago. We will now offer casual/comfort food specials only on Thursdays and of course we will keep the garden fresh salad bar. I hope you embrace these changes and enjoy these menus that are exclusive to you as a member. I welcome and encourage your feedback, both positive and negative, as we continue to strive to maintain and improve the standards of excellence you have known in the past. I just finishing my tenth year as Executive Chef for the Club and it has been an honor and a privilege to grow and change with all of you and your families over the years. Thank You.
