[email protected] April showers will likely help bring about flowers in the same month – not just in May - because we have had unseasonably warm weather the past several weeks. I am not complaining, and students have been happy to be outside as often as possible.
Just prior to Spring/Easter Break, our Archery team competed in Thorhild School’s tournament. I saw many of our participants getting high cores during each flight, and Mrs. Siemens will be providing the results. Now that we are back from the break, badminton has begun and our teams will be practicing and competing throughout the month. Swimming lessons run for the older students with younger grades swimming next month.
Students will again participate in Rochester School’s Heritage Day, researching aspects of their heritage, learning more about their family customs and traditions, and presenting what they have learned during a school showcasing and celebration that will be open to parents and other community members. This year, we’ll be looking at where our various families originated, how they became part of the local community, and what customs and traditions were continued to help shape Rochester. Many student presentation materials will be kept on hand to display during the upcoming Rochester School Centennial in May.
As always, we have a lot going on at school with both academics and extracurricular activities. I hope everyone enjoys a great spring.

ROCHESTER SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION
2016/2017 SCHOOL YEAR
TUESDAY, MAY 3 AT 1:30 PM
Our concert schedule is pretty much in the bag now. Look below for the list. Please remember, if you have continued to come to the Wednesday jam sessions, we hope you’ll join us on stage for the May 12 Centennial show. Please continue practicing at home – especially the performance band – as our concert schedule is about to heat up. Our tour will be shorted this year because events we used to play have been cancelled. We are rebuilding this year and the band is smaller so we will be on the lookout for different opportunities next year. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy a restful, focused season. ROCHESTER SCHOOL CENTENNIAL UPDATE Rochester School is celebrating its centennial from May 12
th through 16
th,, and it would
like the community to join in. Events begin the afternoon of Thursday, May 12, with student displays and presentations, as well as open-house viewing of many artefacts from the school’s past 100 years. The school will be open Friday afternoon as well for visiting alumni to tour, view pictures of old friends, and relive their school days. Other plans for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, include dinners, music, and other entertainment.
Many invitations have been sent out and a Facebook page has been created to connect with alumni and to share information. Mother’s Day hanging basket sales are currently running to assist with funding the event. Rochester School staff is accepting stories, pictures, and other items to display for the open house tours so please share.
If you would like to assist with the upcoming centennial event, the next organizational meetings of the Community Group Rochester School Centennial are scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, and Wednesday, April 27, at 4:30 pm.
ROCHESTER SCHOOL NEEDS YOU!
On May 7, 2016, Rochester School’s staff, students, parents, and community members, will clean alongside
661 from Highway 44 (Dapp Store) to Highway 2, and along 661 from Highway 2 to Secondary Highway
827.
Highway Clean-up is a large job, and must be completed in day. We hope to find enough volunteers to work
with Rochester School’s staff so that we can participate in the fundraising event again this year.
All funds generated support the school in providing extracurricular programs and field trips, and allow us to
buy new equipment and maintain existing facilities that are used by students and community members.
Fundraising events such as the annual Highway Clean-up are crucial.
Highway Clean-up – Saturday, May 7, 2016
7 am to 5 pm - Child care may be available during the event
Participating volunteers must be aged 9 or older
Volunteer numbers must be confirmed by April 15, 2016
To offer your assistance or to obtain further information, please contact Rochester School at 780-698-3970 or
The Rochester School Archery Team did very well this season both at the Canadian National
NASP Tournament in Edmonton and in the Aspen View Regional Tournament in Thorhild. Some
of the students have been shooting for 4 years in the program and they are able to aim quite well!

Great job everyone!
Mrs. Siemens
Kindergarten and Grade One:
Grade Ones began a new unit on “Senses” in Science. They have explored learning
about seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling by doing various experiments,
reading science books, and watching some exciting YouTube selections. They have
particularly enjoyed learning some sign language. We will have this unit finished by
the end of April.
In Math, our class has continued to work with “Numbers to 20”, understanding how
they can represent numbers in various ways, using pictures, manipulatives, numerals
and words. Each day they also work with the understanding of numbers past 100, as
we talk about the numbers of days we have been at school; how the numbers break
down into ones, tens, and hundreds; and how we can show these large numbers with
money.
In PE, we took advantage of the few days we had left of snow, by learning to
cross-country ski. What beautiful weather to be outside!!!
March was a busy month for learning as we wrapped up Social
Studies, Science and Math units before heading off for spring
break. We are now busying ourselves with learning
preparations for Heritage Day, and learning more about local
history of the Rochester area.
I think most of the kids are just happy that spring has arrived!
Mrs. Siemens’ Class:
In language arts, the grades 4-6’s are reading and writing mysteries. This is going to be a major writing assignment with at least two rough drafts due by the end of the month. It also ties in really well with our new science unit in grade 5-6, Evidence and Investigation! The first rough draft is due Monday, April 11 so depending on how long their story is, they may have to do some writing at home. Also in language arts class we have been doing a lot of one-on-one conferences working on improving our reading and comprehension skills. This has worked well now that we have our Daily 5 structure running smoothly. In social studies we just finished up presenting an issue that we are interested in. The focus of this assignment was to plan and prepare before presenting. The topics were interesting and varied. We are talking about local government right now and will proceed to provincial government after. In math, both grade 5 and 6 are working on statistics and probability. We are going to do a lot of our discussion around statistics we draw from www.censusatschool.ca. We have filled out the census and now we are going to use the information from it to talk about statistics. On the social stage, we have gained one new student this past month :), but we are also losing one student early in April :(. Hard to believe there are only 3 months left! If you have any questions, please contact me, [email protected].
Elizabeth Siemens
The Junior High is continuing projects we have started in both LA and CTF. We have
completed filming and editing of the book trailers and are preparing to put the finishing
touches on them. In Art, we are preparing to put the X-Carve through its paces. Most of the
boys have a design ready to go.
In Social, grade 9 is moving on to economic systems while the grade 7 and 8 students are
getting ready to close out the Spanish and Aztecs unit. Our next stop is Japan, then the final
exam. It’s hard to believe that we are in the final stretch.
All grades still have much Science to cover before June so the students will be working hard.
Please expect an increase in homework. In Math we are entering our algebra unit. This is a big
unit and will likely also result in some extra homework.
We are preparing for Heritage Day, on May 4th. Please talk this over at home. Heritage Day
will tie in with the Rochester School Centennial, so we would like to make a good job of it.
Both the band and my 2/3 music class are hard at work practicing some special performances
for your enjoyment for the 100th anniversary celebration, here at school on May 12th.
The Junior High will be starting the preparations for exams before too long – our first final (the
LA Part A written exam) is one month away. Soon we will be talking over exam preparation
and looking to consolidate a year’s worth of work into a useable set of study notes. Practice for
the written exam has already begun. It is very important at this time that students do not get
behind.
Please keep watching the blog for the dates of important events, test and quiz dates, and band
information. As always, please email or call if you have any questions.

Rochester Out of School Care
Program
When starting this program last year, the hope was
to help families who either worked longer hours
than regular school hours or for those who required
care after school once-in-a-while. We have had a
few drop-in students, but the program has not been
able to maintain itself with only two full-time
students. While it may look like a conflict of interest for me to plead the case for
Rochester Out of School Care to remain open (because my kids are the full time
attendees), my desire is more about wanting the program to remain open for the
community. It would not be as convenient for me if the program were to stop, but
we’d survive, I’m more concerned about people who may want to send their
children to Rochester School in the future and need Out of School Care.
In an effort to make this program viable, the school has sent home an online survey
for you to complete. Please let us know why the program has not been of use to
you. From there we will make some decisions in the New Year about whether to
continue the program, reduce how many days it is open, or end the program
completely.
Thank you,
Elizabeth Siemens
