Bu in

FAZL AL-RAHMAN AS ·A PHILOSOPHER*
Charles J. ADAMS
Prof of Islamic Thought McGill University, Canada
I have been askcd to participate in this tribute to my bonoured friend, Fazı ai-Rahman, by offering some rcmarks on his contributions to scholarship in the area of philosophy. Left to my own deviees I should probably not have cbosen to write on the subject assigned mc, for ncither my background nor my own personal inclinations equip me veri well for such a task. Fazi ai-Rahman was a formidable student of philosophical thought both in the Islamic and ancient Greel< traditions and a powerful eritic of what he considered to be the failure of his own tradition to utilize the resources of philosophy as it should. His philosophical interesiS and orientation permcate all of his studies of Islam, both those that had to do with specifically philosophical subjccts and those that did not, and in the final analysis nothing less than a comprebensive survey of his life's work and thought would suffice to give an adcquate account of them. In view of the quantity, the depth, and the broad range of his writings, so large an enterprise cannot be undertaken on this occasion; we shaU have instead to be content with a rapid and inevitably less than satisfaetory look at his philosophical contribution.
I do not know what precisely were the factors that first aroused Fazi al-Rahman's interest in Jslamic philosophy and in Muslim thougbt more generally. I would presume them to tic in the family background and in his own personality with its curiosity and active imagination. The few hints that I have come from conversatioos with Fazi during the brief time in the Iate 1950s and early 1960s when we wcre colleagues together at McGill University in the Institute of Islamic Studies. Fazi spoke of having had an intercst in Islamic matters even from

karşılıklı müzakerelerimizden elde etmekteyim. Fazlur
Rahman, özellikle öğrenciliğinin ilk dönemlerinden beri
isıarnı meselelerle ilgilendiğini söylerdi. O, İlebal'in düşüncesinden oldukça fazla etkilenen bir nesle mensup
tu.
Kendi
ifadesine göre, sakallı, geleneksel Hindistan kıyafetiyle ve
her yönüyle, yeni çevresine tamamen tczat teşkil eden
Herhangi bir analizeiden is

the earliest times but especially in his student days. He belonged to the gencration that was powerfully influenced by the thought of Iqbal whose intcllecıual activity, I think it no exaggeration to suggest, wa~ a kind of model for him. He also was no doubt stimulated by the political agitation in which Indian Muslims were swepı up during the 1930s and 40s and had somc personal contact with certain of the Icading fıgurcs.
The decisively formative influence, however, seems to have been the time spent in study in England. According to his own accounts, he went to Britain asa young Tndian Muslim .of traditional background, bearded, wcaring traditional Indian clothing, in every respect a figure who conırasted in sharp terms with his new environmenı. Tn retrospect he spoke with considerable amusemerit of the spectacle he must have presented in the eyes of his tcachers. This sense of humoor combincd with a bit of the mischief-maker werc among the most aliractive
aspccts of Fazi al-Rahman's personality. Fortunately, those chargcd with directing his intcllcctual formatian had the ability to see beyond the façade and to recognize the keen and eager mind of the young scholar. It was their insistence that, as prcparation for the serious study of Islamic philosophy and thought, he must fırst achieve a thorough grounding in Greek philosophy, including the language of the original tcxls. Ile was, therefore, subjected to a rigorous course of instruction in the history of ancienı philosophy.
The fruit of the efforıs that he expended in mastering the Grecks may he secn throughout his writings but cspecially in those studies that he devoted to specifıcally philosophical suhjects. His grasp of the major themes of Greck thought was profound; no one can read such a work as Proplıeey in Islam, the Introduction to his ıranslation of porıions of Tbn sına•s Kitab al-Najat, or his study of Mu Ila Sadra ai-Shiraır withouı bcing imprcssed, indeed all ~uı overwhelmcd, by the magisterial command of botb the ancient and the Islamic texts. One of the most demanding of all tasks for any analyst is that of sıating.succinctty and with clarity the essence and im port of a complex argument or doctrine. The capacity to do so is not possible to realize unless one has understood the matter at issue in depth and in aiUts aspccts. Fazi al-Rabman passessed that rare ability to cut through complications to extracı the heart of a diffıcult issue and thcn to apply his insight to the other matters in which he was interested. Apart from his native intelligence, the largest element in his capaciıy for exposition and penetrating analysis of Muslim philosophical thought was his complcte familiarity with the philosophical hcritage of the ancicnt world. Thcre is su rely a lesson here for those of us who remain and who are chargcd with instruction and re-

search relating to the lslamic intellectual tradition. When an agenda produces such results as may be seen in the writings of Fazi ai-Rahman, it is worthy of being considered, both for our own sakes and for that of our students.
As deeply interested as he was in philosophy, Fazi ai-Rahman was not what I should call a constructive philosopher. By that I mean that he did not give himself to building a philosophical system of his own, one that would lay out his personal thought in an abstract and comprehensive way. Unfortunately, we do not have a series of volumes that set out the Ralımanian view of the world, nor is he the author of any novel theory that might attract discussion and controversy for a time. His philosophiziog tcnded on the contrary to express itself principally in reaction to the thought of others, through the exposition and explanation of their work or through a carcful and minute criticism of it. He was, in other words, more an histarian of philosophy than an ariginatar and propagator of original philosophical ideas. His approach to the philosophy that interested him was, however, far from being historicistic. Mere description or reconstruction of a system from the past was never enough; he sought always to enter into the spirit of the · body of thought he was considering, first to make it his own, and then to expound it for itS relevance to .himself and his readers.
His understanding of the history of philosophy was decidedly not that of the many 19th century thinkers who were content to trace the origins and development ol tcrms, concepts or ideas, and having done so, then believed that they had understood as much of the intelleetual history as it is possible to understand. Despite his undoubted depth of knowledge in classical philosophy which equipped him superbly for precisely that kind of scholarship, he actually devoted vcry ·nttte of his time to such nit-picking pursuits. Perhaps the prime examplc of the interest to Jocate the classical bases of elemen ts in IsJamic philosophy is his doctoral dissertation, but in that case the cancem for showing the relationship between Ibn sına and the Greek thinkers who preceded him may perhaps be explained by the demands of Fazl's English prcceptors who were, quite naturally, always locking over his shoulder. In any ease the majority of his work is not marked by a particolar intcrest in demansırating histarical antecedents and dependence; and to the extent that such interest is lacking some may consider thcre to be a weakness in his philosophicallabours.
More important as an indication of his anti-historicist attitude is the fact that Fazi al-Rahman never showed the slightest hesilation to offer his own jud!(ment

of a position that he was engaged in analyzing. There was no place in his scheme of things for the value-free or noncommitted study of the Islamic intellectual heritage. He was in no way reluctant to reflect upon the content and the consequences of the idcas put forward by some of those whom he studied. That is to say that his histarical study of philosophy provided a frame work within which his own engagement with the subject matter could be achieved and ·expressed. He gave credit, but he also assessed blame. Admiring the great fıgures of Islamic thought and respecting them as he doubtless did, he was, nonetheless, forthcoming and often even harsh with his criticisms. The faliisifah (philosophers) he accused of not truly understandiog the religious impulse in Islam; they had Iiille sense, he averred, of the awcsome majesty of the creative and sovereign l.ord who commands man's devotion. Tnstead they had reduced the fundamental and compelling Tslamie rcligious experience with all of its emotional richness to an intellectual rcalization of the natu re of being. Thus, for them God becamc an impersonal abstraction and not the urgent and ever preseni commanding Will that gives directian to life, the form in which most Muslims have known I li m.
Although the philosophers sought to adapt their thought to the religious iosights of the community at
· large -and thought that they had done so- they wcre, in faet, unsuccessful. Lost in their sophisticated speculations was the moral-social visian that for Fazi al-Rahman represented the very heart of Islam. Bu ı not only d id the faliisifah miss the real spirit of Islam, there was, furthermore, an element of arrogance and tlitism in the position which they upbeld, for they thought themselves iri their intellectual refinement to be superior to the common run of the Muslim faithful. In doing so they came very close to affırming a doctrine of a double truth, one for the klıawliss (~lite) and anather for the 'awdmm (masses). Fazı did not believe the philosophers actually to have gone so far as to affırm the double truth idea, but from his presentation of them the re can be little doubt of their exaltcd estimation of their own achievements and of thcir distancc from the great body of believers.
Anather aspecl of Fazi al-Rahman's attitude towards the philosophers of the Iradition is also worthy of comment. Personally, there can be little doubt that he felt a natural sympathy with the concerns of these great thinkers; his own ıemperament after all was strongly intellectual and rational. Ile was also however, subject to the broad social and intellectual currcnts that have played upon Muslim thought in all parıs of the world in the modern era, and niore than most he was aware of the attacks upon Islam, both explicit and implicit, which the modern period has witnessed. In the general situa-

özellikle filozofların sadece isıam•a değil, genelde in
Bununla beraber, Ehl-i Sünnet'in kendi gelişme sürecinde, rasy~nal
cesaretine sahipti.
Böylece, vardığı sonuç beğenilmeyip her taraftan
kınama ve ağır tenkitler aldığı anda bile ilmi kariyerinde
bütünlük vardı. İşte Fazlur Rabman bunu başarmış ve
mücadele etmiştir. Özellikle toplumun çok muhafazakar
unsurlarına karşı tahrik edici davranmaktan ve ihtilaflan
zevk aldığı bir gerçektir. Geçmişe körü körüne
bağlılıkları ~bebiyle isıarn görüşünü tahrif edip
sınıriandırın ış addettiği kimselere karşı durduğu gibi diğer
taraftan da tamamen modern görünme arzuları
içerisinde İslam'ın kendine has kavrayışını kaybetmiş gör!lnen kimselere de karşıydı. Bir kimsenin isıarn geleneğindeki rasyonal düş!lncenin temsilcilerini savun
ması, Müslüman taraftarlarının govenini kazanan ve
tenkit etmeye davet eden düşüncelerini ortaya koyarken
ve· yargıların ı ölçüp biçerken akıllıca davranması,
düşünmesi ve yazıya dökmesi demekti.
tion of social and intellectual erisis that has obtained among Muslims for more than a century now, many, as we all know, have responded by a defense of all things Islamic, closing ranks to present a positive and assured face to the tbreatening world raund about: Among the strongest arguments which such apologists for Islam have used has been the great contribution that the philosophers in particular have made, not only to Islam but to mankind in general. In developing their case such apologists have often presented the philosophers as the representatives par exeellence of the Islamic tradition, as embodying to a degree that no one else can the rationality and intellectual adventuresomeness which in tbeir view are the very essence and spirit of both Islam and the modern world.
Fazi al-Rahman, too, was conccrned to defend the Islamic heritage against ignorant and unjust critics and to uphold the signifıcance of the philosophers, but he was decidedly opposed to doing so at the price of distorting the history of the community or belraying his own best insights. He saw clcarly that the mainsırcam of Peripatetic philosophy among the Muslims as exemplified in such fıgures as aı-Farabf and Ibn Sfna was at best marginal to the so-called orthodox'Y of the community, and he did not besiiate to say so. He also understood and lamented the extent to which Muslim orthodoxy had denied or limited the role of the raıionalist tradition in the course of its development. In sbort, he bad both the critica! histarical sense to assess the role of the philosophers in lslamic history and their relationship to the rest of the community and also the courage to present the results of his scbolarly inql)iry straighforwardly even though his view went against the current of his time and might even be though his view went against the current of his time and might even be thought to weaken the cause of gaining greater respect for the Islamic tradition.
Thcre was thus an integrity in his scholarship which be upheld cvcn when the conscqucnce was opprobrium and vilifıcation heaped upon him from all sides. It can have been no easy thing to have stood against both the conservativc and the modernisı wings of Muslim thought and to have persisted .in face ·of the ki nd of opposition and rejection that were mountcd. But Fazı ai-Rahman was nothing if not a fıghter. The fact is that he delighted in controversy and in acıing provocatively, especially towards the more conservative elemenis in the community. He set his face as much against those wbom he considered to bold a limited and distorted vision of I slam because of tbeir blind clinging to the past as he did againsı those on the other band who seemed to lose the grasp of that which was distinctively Islamic in their allconsuming desire to be seen as modern. Yukarıda belirtildiği gibi, Fazlur Rabman öncetilele
bir felsefe tarihçisi olarale tanımtanması gerektiğine
inanırken, tarihi çalışmaları, kendi görüşlerini sunup
geliştirebilecek bir yapı arzetmişti. Şimdi, eserlerinde
görülen, İslam düşüncesine yapmış olduğu bazı mOsbel
katiaları ele atabiliriz.
Dikkatimizi çeken ilk nokta, onun İbn sına'yı an
Fazlur Rabman'ın Kitaba'n-Necat tahkilcini takdir
man görevinin teknik yönlerine gereken önemi ?.aten

great disciples of rationality in the Jstamic tradition meant that he himself had to acı, thin k, and write rationally, weighing his judgements carefully and presenting his insights both as they reflected credit on his fellow Muslims and as they invited criticism.
White I believe that Fazi al-Rahman must be
deseribed primarily as an histarian of philosophy, as was suggested above, his histarical studies provided a
framework within which he was able to offer and devetop
his own insights. We may now turn to consider same of
the positive contributions to the understanding oflslamic
thought that are to be seenin his work.
The fırst that we may nöte is his undoubted con
tribution to the u nderstanding of Ibn Sina that amounts
to a new interprctation of same of the basic teachings of
this man who was, perhaps, the most profound and im
portant of all the great Muslim philosophical minds
Fazi al-Rahman, at least, thought that he was so. Fazl's
work on Ibn Sina consists first of all of a text edition of
portions of the Kitdb al-Najat dealing with the doctrine
of the saul. Although text editing isa very different sart of
activity from the cxposition and analysis of philosophical
ideas, nonethcless, it is a kind of work that is essential to
progress in all phases of Islamic Studies. We shall ac
complish liute without access to original source
mateı'iats, and we should all be graıe(ut to those who
have subjected themselves to the immense labour of
preparing reliable texts.
In the case of Fazl's edition of Ki tab al-Najat, there is special reason for acknowledgement since by comman agreement the edition is a splendid one. Jts merit does not stern from the collation of an e.~pecially large number of manuscripts nor form the employment of a particutarIy etaborale critica! apparatus, though Fazi certainly paid suffıcient attention to the technicalities of his task. Its great strength lies, rather, in tlıe fact that it offcrs a clear, readable, and convincing version of what Jbn sına was saying. It is the product of a mi nd which entered in to the spirit of the views being presented and that understood them completcly. There is the eleme~ ı of comman sense in the presentation of the treatisc; bccause Fazi graspcd with clarity the thrust of the argument he was ablc to deal witb the ambiguities by reasoning that Ibn sına, to be consistenı with his general position, must in this or that instance have meanı tbus and so. The method was one;: of reconstructing in h~ own mind the abstruse thought processes of the teacher. In short, one is brought tcre once again to appreciate Faz)'s mastery of his subiect and his acute intelligence.

On the substantive side his contribution to the appreciation of Ibo srna lies, in my opinion, in two distinct areas: 1) the problem of essen ce and existence and 2) the nature of cognition. On the matter of esseoce and existence that wbich was of special iaterest ·was the relationship of these two in the being of God. Most of those in the pası who had studied lbn sına had interpreted him as believing that God's existence was something added to his essence. Indeed, Ibn Sina did teach this kind of relationship between es.~ence and existence with respect to all created entities. But the being of God was different from that of His creatures, and for Him there could be no question of His essential Being Jacking something which required to be joined to it in order to actuali7~ i~. Though the categories of essence and existence are the basic distinction of Ibn Sfna•s metaphysics, in the case of God tbcse two are one and the same.
Fazi thought that if properly understood, Ibn sına will be seen to teach that God's essence is his existence, that the two are identical, and that there is, in fact, no distinction between thcm. Fazi sougbt thus to correct a serious misappreheosioo of Ibn Sina•s thought. He carried thcsc discussions farther in his excellent and detailed study of Muııa Sadra ai-Shfrazi for whom existence was the most basic notian of all. Not only was Fazl's book on this important thioker the first full length study to be offercd to the Westero world; it rcmains the single work to explain the philosophical contribution -as opposed to the mysticat- of this im portant thinker.
The second vital aspect of Fazl's contribution to knowledge about lbn sına is the exposilion of the laıter's theory of knowledge. Fazi has demonstrated the sharp differences betwccn Ibn Sına and his predecessor in the Tslamic tradition, ai-Farabi, and he has shown the strong depcodence of bolh on the teachings of a variety of ancient philosophers, but principally Aristotle. The heart of Ibn sına•s teaching is to be seen in his doctrines of the grades of abstraction wbich is one of his original contribulions to the diseussion. He distinguishes among four kinds of perception: ı) the sensory, which is the perception of individual forms embedded in matter 2) the imaginative, whicb is the perception of forms without their being embedded in matter but, nonetheless, existing after the pattera of physical objects 3) the estimative, wbich perccives the affcctive, therefore, abstract faculties attached to material objects, such as pleasure and pain, good and cvil 4) and fınally, the intellective, which perccivcs pure forms or inteUigibles, having no connection at all with nor dependencc upon t~e material realm. This set of original dcductions, designed to solve certain probtems in the Aristotclcan tbeory of knowledge leads to a further detailed analysis of the highest faculty, the intellcet. The whole climaxes in Jbn Sin§'s theory of

Zira, Eht-i Sünnet'in şartlannı yerin~ .l\ctiremediginden yaşamasına müsaade editmemıştı.

prophetic genius which "through intuition from the active intelligence comes to possess a knowledge of everything insıantaneously". The thrust of the grcat philosopher's analysis of the process of knowledge thus lead him to a position that synthesized the interesis of philosophy and religion, a matter to which we shall returo shortly.
If it be said that his contribution to knowledge of Ibn Sina is the tirst positive and constructive aspcct of Fazi ai-Rahman's studies of Islamic philosophy, the second such contribution may be judged to be his argument to establish the truly Islamic character and retevance of the philosophic interesis of the great Muslim rationalists. The bases of lslamie Peripatcıie
philosophy -and to a certaio dcgrcc that of the latcr 11-luminationist school as well- clcarly lic in the heritagc from ancient Grccce. The tcrms which the Muslims use, the issucs which they address, the modes of argumcnt they adopt are all taken from the Greeks. So indcbtcd are the philosophers to the ancicnıs and so concerncd are lhey with a set of problcms peculiarly their own and not shared by the majority of the community, that it has seemed to many as if they have nothing at all to dowith Islam. Historically, indeed, the majority of the community has thought of them in these ıerms, most often treating them as inlitlcls, and if acccpting them at all, then considering thcm at best as marginal to the central thrusı oflslamic life and thought.
Fazl ai-Rahman, however, sought to claim the philosophers as genuine - and importanı- elemenıs of the true Islamic heritage. Ilis work amounted to an effort to build a scparate and distinctive idcnıity for Tslamic philosophy - to show how, in spite of the unquestioncd Greek orientation, that falsafah (philosophy) found its place in the lslamic scheme of things and served an Tslamic purpose. Ilis intcntions in this regard are nowhere beller expressed than in the beginning of the seetion on
philosophy in his book Islam:
The materiats with which this philosophicat system was ronstructed were either Grcck or deduccd from Greck ideas: in its mateıial or rontent aspecı. thercfore , it is Ilellenistic throughouı. Buı the actual consırucıion, the system itself, has an indubitably Islamic sıamp: all atong its meıaphysical fronıiers it rcckons with the corresponding religious mctaphysics of Islam and consciously ıries to ereale points not only or conıact but of coincidence wiıh the lattcr. But this it does only in so far as the raıional Grcck character of the maıerial would allow. llercin ties both its brillianı originality an..J its ıragir faıc in ı~ıamiı: hisıoıy; for, having failcd ıo saıisfy orthodox requirements, it was denied the passport to survival. 1

... - " - ~ .~ .- . ~ . . ~ ........ nüfuz ettiğini görmUştür. Zannederim;hayatını adadığı en

Last, but not least -and obviously related to what has been said earlier- is Fazi ai-Rahman's contribution to the defence of rationality as both a legitimate and a necessary aspect of Islamic life; same of his most brilliant and convincing work was done in connection with the role of tradition as a religious authority in Islam. The study of tradition was alsa some of his most controversial endeavour, targetting as it did both the conservatives of his own community and those Western scholars whom he deemed to have misunderstood the development of religious authority in the early history of the Muslim community. Especially against the conservatives he was eager to emphasize tbe flexibility oflslamic thought in the early days, how the leaders of the community such as the Khalif 'U mar time after time adapted their vicws to suit the needs of the time. With respect to la ter periods he lamented the fashion in which kalfim (theology), partly dependent as it was on philosophical .modes of thought, ultimately forsook: rational methods to become a rigid system. Similarly he criticized the abandonment of reason represented by the juridical doctrine of the closing of the gates of ijtihlid (interpretation), holding that there is, in fact, no justification for this view at all. In shc:>rt, he found the formative period of Islamic thought and major institutions to be perıneated with the spirit of rationality. I think that one of the overriding purposes of his lifclong work may be said to have been to revive the appreciaıion and the resort to rationality among his Muslim contemporaries. For he believed that rationality, the keystone of all philosophizing was not only intriosic to the Islamic heritage but alsa that it held the key to the solution of the manifold problems which the Muslim community confronts in our day.
