Saies oi stocs increased rapidly when the train demonstrated that it could indeed reach speeds of 60 miles an hour during the two-mile run. A free ride frequently was the clincher as a tnnlled pas- senger stepped down to eagerly purchase a block of stock and receive an ornate certificate. However, that was the extent of the company's operation. Be- fore the year's end the whole thing had folded. The buildings were sold at auction and hauled away. No dividends were ever paid and none of the outstand- ing shares were ever redeemed. Some few of the stables are said still to serve as garages in and around Patchogue. The hy- drants made cordwood for the few unfortunates who had com- pleted their homes before the bubble burst. These families stayed on and became the founders of what people then somewhat derisively called Boomertown, but what is now a part of Hagerman. In Novem- ber of 1902, at a sale of the company's assets, the purchaser was John Koe Smith, Patchogue real estate man. Although the Bicycle Railroad was an unfortunate investment for a great number of Long Is-' landers, the promoters were never formally charged with illegal practices. As a perhaps fitting but somehow sad ending, the Rocket was shipped to Coney Island for exhibition pur- poses.
