Top 10 Reasons why Hyde Park is a Great Neighborhood

P a g e 2F r o m t h e d e s k o f

We are looking forward to another great year for Hyde Park Preservation, Inc. (HPPI). We live ina wonderful community, and we are proud to serve as your neighborhood association, officiallyrecognized by the City of Tampa for this purpose.

HPPI is dedicated to the historic preservation, rehabilitation and development of Old Hyde Park:

We help to ensure that everyone lives up to the zoning ordinances that protect our precious

community.

We fight to ensure adequate allocation of resources from the City of Tampa and other authorities.

We promote neighborhood safety and awareness, through oversight of our separately-funded H.E.L.P. program and in

connection with special holidays and events such as Halloween and Gasparilla.

We fund the installation, maintenance and repair of our historic street signs.

We promote knowledge and awareness of our neighborhood’s history through a variety of special projects.

We also organize the Annual Block Party and the family-oriented Holiday Porch Party.

Can you think of better reasons to live in Hyde Park? Send them to the Gazette, and we will publish an updated list in the next issue. The Editors reserve the right to award prizes for the Best Overall Top 10 List and the # 1 Best Reason, in our sole discretion. The Old Hyde Park Garden Club: History and Functions

Garden Club

Welcome Coffee

P a g e 3

The Old Hyde Park Garden Club (OHPGC) was established in the spring of 1978 largely due to the efforts of

Ms. Mary Esther Parker. The OHPGC included 11 ladies who created objectives to enhance and maintain the

common areas along the streets of Old Hyde Park, to provide social functions aimed at developing neighbor-

hood friendships and to motivate the refurbishment of historic homes.

The Garden Club initially worked to create zoning regulations banning commercial and multifamily resident

dwellings which thwarted the division and destruction of large turn-of-the-century homes into apartments and

boarding houses. Ms. Barbara Harris and the other OHPGC members petitioned and met with City Council to

“down-zone” the neighborhood which essentially preserved Old Hyde Park.

The OHPGC has hosted many events over the last 31 years such as morning coffee meetings, demonstrations regarding cooking and

decorating techniques, silent auctions and other very memorable parties. The Garden Club has also hosted a golf outing, children’s

events such as Wee Mystic Krewe and Halloween gatherings. School supply drives, Toys-for-Tots, and toys for San Jose mission are

some of the contributions that the OHPGC have extended to the Tampa Bay area.

Approximately 10 years ago, the Garden Club worked with community members to refurbish Kate Jackson Park. Ms. Norma Jean Burr,

along with others, worked to create the beautiful space which includes fountains, an accessible playground and the lush, indigenous

gardens. Garden Club members (specifically Missy Schukraft and Sarah Frenzel Pinckney) continue to maintain the planters existing on

either side of the main entrance to Kate Jackson Park.

The Garden Club has worked under the direction of Sarah Frenzel Pinckney to create the landscaping on the grounds of Gorrie Elemen-

tary School. The butterfly garden and the front landscaping were carefully planned and planted by Sarah Frenzel Pinckney and Missy

Schukraft.

Currently, the OHPGC and HPPI have joined to refurbish all the street signs within the Old Hyde Park boundaries with city approved,

historic signs. This effort has been years of work for Cindy Ramm, Steve Hudoba, Elizabeth Christenberry and others. The historic

street signs will be a notable esthetic feature that will be a nice accouterment to the picturesque streets.

The OHPGC is an example of a voluntary organization that has made a substantial impact on the community through rezoning efforts,

historic awareness of irreplaceable architecture and enhancing and motivating a sense of pride in Old Hyde Park. It is not by simple

luck that Old Hyde Park is a desirable place to live. Volunteers are a key element to success.

Many people have dedicated time to the OHPGC over the years such as Laurel Thompson, Linda Hopes, Elizabeth Christenberry, Lari

Hudoba, all past presidents. Thank you to everyone who has helped make the OHPGC a productive voluntary organization.

The OHPGC is looking for neighbors interested in volunteering next year. The benefits of volunteering are mainly centered on meeting

other neighbors and building relationships that have historically promoted the essence of our Hyde Park community. Please call Janine

Overcash at (813) 727-7277 if you are interested in volunteering.

YARD OF THE MONTH

Old Hyde Park Garden Club recognizes these neighbors for their efforts toset an example with the Yard of the Month sign in their yard. We try toselect yards that have not been recognized in the previous several yearsto spread the opportunity to receive the award. Small yards, large yards, lawn service or personally planted and attended yards are all consideredequally based mainly on easy visual appeal to any and all passing by.

Does a yard in your area deserve recognition? To nominate ayard for consideration for the Old Hyde Pak Garden Club Yard of theMonth, contact Michelle Wolfe at 251-6994 or stick a note on the door at800 S. Oregon Avenue. Old Hyde Park Street Signs

The street sign project is under-way! Back in 1991, HPPI took on the projectto install decorative street and stop signsappropriate for our historic neighborhood. With a lot of work by HPPI Board members(and persistence of Laurie Kipphut) thisproject was started in 2000. Unfortunately,we were unable to complete the entire pro-ject at that time and over the years we haveseen damage to the signs due to the waythey were installed. Now our neighborhoodis a mixture of standard issued street signsalong with those that are decorative. Wehave all learned from the original projectand are ready now to finish what wasstarted so many years ago.

This project has been no smallfeat. An agreement to install these signswas drawn with the city, proposals for theproject needed to be made and most impor-tantly, funding needed to be secured.Through the hard fund-raising efforts ofboth HPPI and OHPGC, we are now readyto move on. Approximately 75 signs willeither be moved, turned, secured or re-placed. Each one of these signs will berequired to have a site plan and be permit-ted in order to be changed. The cost of thisproject is $23,106. HPPI and OHPGC part-nering together has made this happen. Please support both these organizations asthey continue to make our neighborhoodbeautiful.

How Does HELP Do It?

Old Hyde Park is one of only three Tampaneighborhoods to have 365 days of extrasecurity coverage, working random hourscoming on duty as early as 9 pm and some-times as late as 11pm five hours per night. The same eight officers have been assignedpermanent duty to HELP, the “newest” in thetroop has been working the area for fouryears, so they are familiar with the area. They patrol in a City of Tampa marked car,in uniform, with all amenities: police gun, police radio, access to backup.

HELP officers patrol 14 streets plus allof the alleys in Old Hyde Park. The entireloop takes 45 minutes. They may sit in theircar quietly with windows down listening foractivity or for the sounds of suspects or theypark their car and patrol on foot to investi-gate a suspicious car or person. Most re-cently HELP has seen crimes of opportunity:rifling through unlocked cars, attempts tosteal bikes locked but left outside. More im-portantly, HELP officers recently encounteredprowlers seeking unlocked doors and windowsof neighborhood homes at 3am and were ableto avert possible burglary.

Emergency? Call 911 first. If the HELPofficer is on duty, dispatchers will contactHELP who may only seconds away. HELP alsoprovides security when members are out oftown or request safety escort at home late atnight. Contact HELP cell phone number(issued to HELP members) to speak with theofficer or leave clear information, your name, telephone number, address and how late theymay return your call.
