National Vietnam War Veterans Day Celebrations – March 29th

The Director for the Baltimore National Cemetery Complex under the National Cemetery Administration, Department of Veteran Affairs which includes Baltimore, Annapolis and Loudon Park National Cemeteries in Maryland has invited us to attend the upcoming event. Baltimore National Cemetery provides VA burial benefits to Veterans in Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC and Southern Pennsylvania. Last year as part of the ongoing National 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War, President Trump declared March 29 “National Vietnam War Veterans Day”. They will be hosting two ceremonies to honor Vietnam Veterans, present and past, on Thursday March 29, 2018. Both events would center around a wreath laying. Additionally, all Vietnam Veterans in attendance at either program would be recognized with a commemorative lapel pin and other commemorative items will be available.

Baltimore National Cemetery at 11:00 AM Annapolis National Cemetery at 2:00 PM

Wayside Marker Dedication BEING Planned for June 9th

The W3R Wayside dedication will be Saturday June 9th at 2:00PM with the American Friends of Lafayette in Eastport, in Annapolis. All are invited to attend.

Maryland 400 The Maryland Society has acquired a significant collection of General William Smallwood correspondence related to his service and the state of Maryland in the Revolutionary War. In accordance with our Constitution, our intent was to acquire and preserve these important documents for posterity.

We ask that you consider donating to the Maryland 400 Patriots’ Fund in support of the acquisition. As the first order establishing our MD 400 Honorary Regiment will be published at our annual meeting, Donations will counted towards your appointment in the Regiment and recognized in that order. Donations may be sent to Gary Neal, PO Box 1, Cockeysville, MD 21030-0001.

New Maryland 400 Course Washington College now offers the following course HIS 394-10: “Finding the 400: A Revolutionary Mystery”. The students will also augment the Maryland 400 research efforts. It was a mythic moment in the Revolutionary War: on August 27, 1776: in the thick of Washington's defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn, a valiant band of Maryland soldiers fought off a much stronger British force, thus saving the Continental Army. Most of the men were killed or taken prisoner. They became known to future generations as the “Maryland 400” — a reference to the “300 Spartans” of ancient Greek fame — and even provided Maryland with its official nickname, the Old Line State. The slain soldiers' bodies are said to lie buried somewhere in Brooklyn, possibly beneath an auto repair shop. The photo is of the students visiting the grave of Patriot Benjamin Chambers, a member of the MD 400.

President Granville Warren “Sonny” Wehland

SAR #118089 MD #2577 63rd Past State President (1986)

(9/9/1934-3/18/2018)

He was the 63rd President of the Maryland State SAR and is a descendant of Sgt. Moses Pearson of the Massachusetts Militia. He was a past Governor General of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, past President of the Howard County Historical Society. He was the son of Henry W. Wehland and Ellen Pearson who both died in 1973. In the 1960s, Wehland worked with the late Sen. James Clark Jr. to garner support for anti-discrimination legislation that would allow blacks to enter public places in Maryland. A lifelong Democrat and ardent Obama supporter, Wehland said he didn't understand then - just as he can't comprehend now - why anyone cared about the color of someone's skin. He grew up on farmland that Snowden River Parkway now traverses. Wehland graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1959 and he became a pioneer in highway engineering in then-rural Howard County. He ended up staying with the Bureau of Highways for 36 years, including 25 as its chief. In the mid-1960s, when James W. Rouse came along with plans for Columbia, Wehland wrote the codes for all the roads being built for Town Center and the villages. Rouse's vision of people

of different races, nationalities and incomes living and working together was shared by the highway engineer. About the same time, Wehland's close friend, James Clark Jr., was elected to the Maryland Senate. It wasn't long before Clark asked for Wehland's help in building local support for a groundbreaking piece of legislation. He was married to Mary Constance Colbert and had two children Matthew H. and Mary J. Wehland Lynch.

The Years have passed by, In the blink of an eye, Moments of sadness,

And joy have flown by.

People I loved, Have come and have gone,

But the world never stopped, And we all carried on.

And now with old age,

It has become very clear, Things I once found important,

Were not why I was here.

And what's really important, Is now clear to me, It is whether or not,

I was the best me I could be.

Dr. William Armstrong Barnett SAR #77776 MD #1652

John Paul Jones Chapter

(10/05/1933-11/21/2015)

Dr. William "Bill" Barnett passed away at his home in Annapolis on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Born on October 5, 1933 in Baltimore to the late Levi

Armstrong and Helen Stokes Barnett, Bill was a graduate of Baltimore's City College High School where he played soccer. In 1955, Bill earned a Bachelor of Science from Washington College in Chestertown where he was an All-American lacrosse defenseman and a member of the 1954 national championship lacrosse team. Bill earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry and went on to serve as a Captain in the Army's First Cavalry Division at Fort Dix and Fort Sam Houston, and in Korea with the 15th Medical Battalion. Bill married Anne Funkey in 1962. The couple and their four children settled in Annapolis and were members of St. Mary's parish and the Annapolis Yacht Club. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and optometrist. Bill cared for patients at his optometric practices in Edgewater and Bowie until his 80th birthday.

He regularly enjoyed reading, Bible study, handball, tennis, golf, and sailing; and he continued playing, coaching, and supporting the game of lacrosse for many years. Bill is survived by his wife Anne Barnett; four children, Loren, William, Michele, and John; daughter-in-law Merle and five grandchildren, Helen, Sydney, Tyler, Jacqueline, and Bryce.
