Fireworks Sponsorships Set Historic Record

The annual community fireworks show has been a favored event for over 25 years. This year’s show certainly won’t disappoint thanks to the generosity of 62 sponsors which sets an all-time record.

Sponsorships this year increased by 10 sponsors and an additional $4,000 compared to last year. Over $15,000 was collected which will provide some larger shells and a spectacular show to remember.

A special thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors who supported the annual fireworks show that is scheduled for Saturday, July 4th. On the next page is a copy of the

brochure recognizing the sponsors. Brochures are also available at the guardhouse and the clubhouse prior to the event. Members are encouraged to utilize the services of the businesses that helped sponsor our fireworks event.

There is no charge to attend the Fireworks Show which is set to begin around 9:15 pm and all property owners are invited. Viewers are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets and sit behind the clubhouse or along the 18th fairway to enjoy the show. Parking will be available at the clubhouse and activity center parking lots. Overflow parking will be along Old North State Lane in the outbound lane only. Please keep the inbound lane open for emergency vehicle access. Everyone is reminded to practice social distancing while attending the show. One of the amenities owned by the Community Association is the Milingport Putting Green. This amenity is for the enjoyment of all property owners and enhances the property values for everyone in the community. Due to the type of grass on the putting green and special equipment needed to maintain the grass, the green cannot be maintained by just normal landscape contractors, therefore the Association has contracted maintenance of the green with The Old North State Club for over 20 years. The club’s agronomy team, lead by Chris Chapman, has the expertise and knowledge of best practices. Currently, the association pays over $20,000 per year for maintenance of the green. This cost is shared by all property owners through their dues. The maintenance includes mowing, aerating, top-dressing, fertilize, weed control, pesticide application, edging, replacing cups/pins, and irrigation repair. As the green has continued to age, it has been a struggle over the past several years to maintain it to a playable condition. More and more maintenance has been needed over the past few years, and some may recall in 2018, the green was even closed for several months to allow it to recover. New sod was installed in several areas as well which helped short-term. Last year, research was conducted in an effort to find options and better solutions to preserve the green. One solution that Chapman has had success with on the main course is the installation of fans to provide the necessary air flow. Fans keep the grass cooler so it doesn’t get as stressed during the summer months. While not ideal, the board learned that without the fans the green would further decline and could not justify continuing to spend money on short-term fixes that won’t preserve the green long term. Chris also noted that due to our location we are in a transition zone. In the summer, our area is usually a little hotter than surrounding areas and in the winter it is a little colder. This is why the mixture of bent grass and Bermuda are the best choices for greens. He said if we were about 100 miles further south or a 100 miles further north, we would not have these issues. The Old North State Club has used fans on the main golf course for many years and they make a huge difference in the condition of the turf. They are adding three more fans on the main course this year. The fan on the Millingport Putting Green will run 24/7 June through September while temperatures and humidity are high. The board budgeted to have a fan installed this summer and the installation should be completed within the next few weeks.

Can’t wait until August 1st to get rid of your bulk items? Did you change the oil in your lawn mower and don’t know where to discard the old oil? Any resident of Montgomery County can use one of the 12 public convenience waste facilities provided by Montgomery County. The waste site is clean and the attendant on hand is friendly!

It’s only a 13-minute drive from Old North State to the closest waste facility located on Blaine Road.

Blain Road Convenience Site 560 Blaine Road, New London NC 336-461-3103

Summer Schedule - April 1st to Oct. 31st:

• Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 7am-7pm

• CLOSED Tuesday, Thursday

• Sundays from 1pm-7pm All 12 sites have a solid waste compactor and a 250-gallon oil recycling container. No sites can accept white goods (e.g. refrigerator, microwave oven, etc.)

The following convenience sites have open containers and can accept larger household items: 109 South, Blaine, Brutonville, Lovejoy, Onvil, Pee Dee, Pekin, and Windblow.

Homeowners are invited to bring their bulk items to the Community Waste Facility on Saturday, August 1st between 8 am - Noon for our designated Bulk Waste Collection Day.

For the safety of you and our staff, please follow these collection day guidelines in order to observe "social distancing" measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19:

• If there is a line at the waste facility, please wait outside the gate

until the vehicle in front of you has exited.

• It is important that you maintain a safe distance from personnel

who will be unloading your bulk items. Therefore, once it is your turn, pull up to the unloading area, open your trunk, and stay in your vehicle while the items are unloaded.

• The facility has limited space, so if you have trash, recycling or natural debris to unload as well,

please pull to the side to dispose of these items yourself. It is important to keep the entrance/exit to the facility open so traffic can flow smoothly.

On this designated collection day, you may bring lumber, furniture, appliances, computers, grills, carpet, etc. that are not permitted to be left at the facility during normal operations. Personnel with large trucks will be there to unload your items so they can be taken to the landfill. Hazardous waste will not be accepted (i.e. paint, tires, oil, etc.).

There is no charge to take advantage of this opportunity. It is provided as a service to assist homeowners in the disposal of bulk items. Please do not leave bulk or hazardous waste items at the facility at any other time.

It is not uncommon to see all types of wildlife in the community (deer, racoons, skunks, turtles, birds, opossums, squirrels, snakes, fox, etc.). Last summer we had a higher number of fox in the community and they were such fun to watch. However, when residents began feeding the fox, they became too reliant on food from people and didn’t learn how to hunt and survive on their own like wildlife should. As kit-rearing season nears, homeowners are encouraged to enjoy viewing the fox, but please do not feed them. The NC Wildlife Resource Commission recently published the article below. RALEIGH, N.C. (June 9, 2020) — Seeing foxes around your neighborhood, even during the day recently? If so, it is likely because kit-rearing season is upon us. Young foxes, called kits or pups, are maturing and spending more time outside of the den, making sightings of them and adult foxes more likely. For homeowners and others concerned about foxes being too close for comfort, biologists with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission advise to remove all food sources from around the home and start with non-lethal deterrents to encourage foxes to leave on their own. “This time of year, people are seeing families of foxes roaming around, exploring their environment,” said Falyn Owens, the Commission’s extension biologist. “And while seeing foxes, even during the daytime, is usually no cause for concern, we understand that some people don’t necessarily want a family of foxes living so close at hand.” Owens recommends the following tips to keep foxes from getting too comfortable near your home:

• Never intentionally feed foxes or otherwise reward them for coming near humans. While lack of fear may be the goal for some who want to see wildlife up close, to neighbors and other people, fearlessness is easily mistaken for aggression or disease.

• Feed pets indoors or remove all food and dishes when your pet is finished eating outside. Foxes, raccoons, and other wildlife will hang around if they know there is free food.

• Secure garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids and don’t leave them out overnight.

• Keep bird-feeder areas clean and use bird feeders that keep seed off the ground. Removing bird feeders entirely may be necessary if fox sightings are frequent.

• Close off crawl spaces under sheds, porches, decks, and homes so foxes and other wildlife can’t use those areas for resting or raising young.

It is illegal to relocate foxes in North Carolina, in part to prevent the unintentional spread of diseases. As a result, any removals require that the animal be humanely euthanized. “Fortunately, there are several effective non-lethal strategies that can make foxes uncomfortable enough to leave on their own — no trapping required,” Owens said. Some of those involve spotlights toward the den or loud noises. Not everyone, though, wants to scare foxes away. “Leaving a fox den alone to enjoy the spectacular wildlife viewing is always an option for homeowners, as long as people leave the den and kits alone, walk pets on a leash, and teach children to enjoy wildlife from a safe distance,” Owens said. “Though unlikely to be dangerous, they are wild animals, and should be treated as such.” North Carolina is home to two species of foxes: the gray fox and the red fox. The gray fox is the state’s only native fox species; red foxes were originally imported from Europe. They are both relatively small canids, standing between 12 to 16 inches high at the shoulder and weighing between 7 to 15 pounds — much smaller than an average-size Labrador Retriever. Both species are found throughout the state, including in urban areas and suburbs. As with other wildlife species, foxes are very adaptable and often find residential areas to be excellent places to live and raise their young. Foxes only use a den while raising their young, so once the kits are old enough to fend for themselves, usually by mid to late summer, they will abandon the den and move on. “It’s helpful to think of the den as a crib or nursery; adult foxes don’t use them,” Owens said. If foxes are causing property damage and non-lethal methods have been ineffective, additional removal options are available. For more information, read the Commission’s “Coexisting with Foxes” resource. For questions regarding human interactions with foxes or other wildlife, visit www.ncwildlife.org/Have-A-Problem.
