THE PENTATEUCH I. HIGHER CRITICAL VIEW – J, E, D, P

Four different manuscripts, written at different times were used to make up the Pentateuch. These are known as: J –

E – D – P –

B. Evangelical view – Moses

Evidence

1. He was well qualified scholastically to do so (Acts &:22), and there is no rational

reason archaeologically, historically or in the nature of the cause why he would not do so. 2. The Pentateuch claims that Moses wrote it, at least in part (Ex. 17:14; 24:4; 34:27;

Num. 33:2; Deut. 31:19; 24-26). 3. The rest of the Bible claims that Moses did so (Josh. 1:7; I Ki. 2:3; Lk. 24:44; I Cor.

9:9).

Page 8: OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY, Part 1

O.T. Survey, Part 1 Page 7

4. Our Lord claimed that Moses wrote of Him (Jn. 5:46-47 cf. Gen. 3:15; 49:10; Num. 24:17; Deut. 18:15-18).

5. The foundation of all revealed truth of God’s redemptive plan is based on the

Pentateuch. If this foundation is unreliable, the whole Bible is unreliable.

II. DATE Just prior to Moses’ death III. SCOPE OF THE PENTATEUCH

He looks forward to the day when, with his mother’s approval (3:12), he can make her his bride.

wedding day – v. 11. She feels out of place in the court – 2:1; 6:13 her origin and complexion. But it is her complexion and simplicity that attracted Solomon – to the embarrassment

of her brothers – 8:8, 9. So, she needs Solomon’s encouragement (read 2:2 and 6:8, 9). She longed for the country – 7:11-13 (let us go back to the place of our courtship). So, they return – 8:5 — She reminds her brothers of the things they have said – 8:8. She requests and receives a larger share for her brothers from Solomon – 8:12.
