OLD WISHMORE“My husband and I were living in another village not far from here when we happened upon an advert for Old Wishmore in the local paper,” says Elizabeth. “There was no picture, just a description which made us very curious, and as we were contemplating a move we decided to take a look. A developer was in the process of renovating the house, but at that time it was still a bit of a wreck; however as we approached it we were struck by the sheer peace and quiet and beauty of the setting. Deciding to buy a property in that state was definitely a case of heart ruling the head, but we’ve since enjoyed eight very happy years here.”

“As the house was in the process of being renovated when we found it, we were able choose many of the fixtures and fittings and really put our stamp on the interior. But I must say that the developers did an excellent job of bringing the property back to life, while retaining all of its really beautiful period features. It’s hugely characterful, but at the same time warm and very comfortable to live in.”

“Both my husband and I are very keen gardeners,” continues Elizabeth, “and over the years we’ve transformed both the front and back gardens here. We have a pretty area at the front, and a very large space at the back to which we’ve added a lot of planting. It’s full of interest and almost seems to meld with the countryside beyond, so we enjoy uninterrupted views across our garden, then the orchards and fields beyond, all the way to the hills in the distance; it’s glorious.”

“We’ve installed a log burner into the huge inglenook in the dining hall, and we also have a comfortable sofa in there, so during the colder months that is the room to which we naturally gravitate,” says Elizabeth. “However the sitting room is wonderfully cool in the summer and I love the kitchen because it takes in the most beautiful views.”

“We’re situated on the fringes of the village, which is a thriving place,” says Elizabeth. “However I particularly like popping into Bromyard, which is a lovely little market town that has everything I need on a day-to-day basis, and then I can come back to the utter peace and tranquility of home.”

“During the renovation of the house, the cellar was turned into two very useful rooms,” says Elizabeth. “One I use as storage and the other my husband uses as an office, but as both have electrics and heating they would also be ideal as guest accommodation. The generous bedrooms upstairs mean that we have ample space for our grandchildren when they come to stay.”

“We are moving to be closer to our sons, but we will be sad to leave Old Wishmore,” says Elizabeth. “We’ll miss the house, the garden, the tranquility of the setting, our lovely neighbours… everything.”

Worcester is the site of the final battle of the Civil War. The River Severn runs through the middle of this attractive city, overlooked by the 10th Century Worcester Cathedral.

The county town and historic city of Worcester is just 17 miles southwest of Birmingham and 23 miles north of Gloucester. The city historically hosted a flourishing glove making industry and was the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain as well as, for much of his life, the composer Sir Edward Elgar.

Historic landmarks include the spectacular Worcester Cathedral, dating back to the 10th Century and the Queen Anne style Guildhall designed by Thomas White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren in 1722. The latest landmark is Worcester’s new central library, ‘ The Hive ‘, a striking gold roofed building on the site of the former cattle market.
