CFC #27768 www.cockerspanielrescue.com After 14 years of volunteering with a rescue, I was starting to feel as though I have seen and heard of everything horrible than human beings can do to helpless animals and that nothing could shock me any longer. Sadly, I was wrong. Fortunately, for every difficult day in rescue and for every horror story that we hear, OBG has our happy endings to give us faith that as a rescue, OBG can make a difference. In this letter I want to tell you about our own holiday miracles with two dogs aptly named Holiday and Miracle. Many of you may remember the story of our missing dog, Mokey. She was one of the Sweet Sixteen who was lost soon after her adoption. Through the dedication of OBG volunteers and help from PureGold Pet Trackers, Mokey is now back safely with OBG after months of living on the streets! Thousands of dollars were spent on the search for Mokey, reward money for tips leading to her return and subsequent vet care, but thanks to our donors we were able to spend that money to bring her home. We are now devoted to giving Mokey a fresh start in life and decided that a fresh start should include giving a new name. Mokey is now Miracle. We think the name suits her. Don’t you agree? Dear Friends, In this letter I want to tell you a story about a very special “honorary cocker” named Holiday whose rescue would never have happened if all the stars had not aligned just right for him on the day of his rescue. Holiday’s name fits him as it really is a holiday miracle that he is here today after having suffered a horrific experience and being very close to death’s door. Later, I am also going to tell you about OBG’s most recent matching funds drive which will run for one day only on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, the “National Day of Giving.” Recently, I was about 8 hours away from Washington, DC visiting my daughter. I was supposed to leave the area very early that morning, but my plans changed due to car trouble. I had just gotten my car out of the garage and was filling my gas tank for the drive home when I received a call from our Vice President of Intake asking if I was still in my daughter’s hometown. She had just received a call from a local shelter asking if we could take a spaniel mix named Holiday who was otherwise going to be euthanized in just 90 minutes from the time she called me. Happy Holidays! Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season from OBG! OBG’s own “Miracle”!! Mokey is Safe That was the first time that luck was on Holiday’s side. Due to my car issues, I was still near the shelter and was able to detour by the shelter before heading home. When I got to the shelter, the staff was so excited that Holiday was getting rescued. Then they brought me this dog wrapped up in a blanket who quite honestly looked like he was half-dead already. I was shocked and appalled. Holiday at Intake Won’t you please help me!!

After 14 years of volunteering with a rescue, I was starting to feel as though I have seen and heard of everything horrible than human beings can do to helpless animals and that nothing could shock me any longer.

Later, I am also going to tell you about OBG’s most recent matching funds drive which will run for one day only on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, the “National Day of Giving.”

Recently, I was about 8 hours away from Washington, DC visiting my daughter.

Wishing you and yours a

wonderful holiday season from OBG!

OBG’s own “Miracle”! !

Mokey is Safe

That was the first time that luck was on Holiday’s side.

The shelter staff and the shelter vet both tried to convince me that Holiday would be fine for an 8 hour drive home, but as much as I wanted to help him, I was afraid he would die while I was driving home. Then came the 2nd time that day that the stars aligned just perfectly for Holiday. A local rescue volunteer just happened to be at the shelter at the same time as me. She overheard me expressing my many concerns and offered to take Holiday to her vet for emergency care if OBG would pay the bill. I immediately agreed and she whisked Holiday off to her vet. When the vet saw him, he told us that Holiday was going into shock and probably would not have lived another hour without medical care!

Naturally, I asked what was wrong and they tried to tell me that he was just “out of it” because he was doped up on pain killers. I asked why he was on pain killers, so they rolled him over, unwrapped the blankets and showed me his underside. He had a long gash down the middle of his belly and looked like someone had gutted him open. When I later got to speak to the shelter vet, she told me that was exactly what she thought had happened to poor Holiday. The poor baby had since spent 3 days at the shelter lying in a crate and the only medical care he had received were pain killers.

In spite of all that has happened to Holiday, he is a very affectionate dog that loves to snuggle on a lap. He is great with other dogs and with children and is going to make a wonderful furever dog for someone. To me, saving Holiday represents the best of rescue and why I wanted to share his story with all of you.

It was touch and go for Holiday for about 24 hours, but he pulled through and after a week at the emergency vet and close to $5,000.00 in medical care, he was finally out of the woods. He had also suffered a broken pelvis, so he needs to be kept very calm until the beginning of December to allow the pelvis to heal, at which time he will be able to return to a normal activity level.

Holiday is Receiving

Medical Care

Because of you….Blurry Tail means it’s wagging!!!

Thank You,

OBG!!

Just when we thought his story could not become more horrific, the vet told us that when Holiday was sedated and they cleaned up the wound, they found evidence that an animal had chewed on the wound before someone found him and brought him to the shelter.

Congratulations are in order!! On November 4, 2014, OBG was honored with the prestigious 2014 Top-Rated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations.

Holiday is not the only “big ticket” dog that OBG has saved this year. Cassie and Dexter both had to have double ear ablation surgeries that cost the rescue over $4,000.00 each. Recently, OBG saved Popcorn, Benji, and Timber that have joined OBG’s ranks of heartworm positive dogs and are now receiving treatment at the cost of close to $1,000.00 each.
