Humble BeginningsAcceleration Sports Institute (ASI) was founded in 2004 by a group of professional athletes whose goal was to provide a more consistent system for training pro athletes than the ones they had used during their careers. In 2005, ASI teamed up with Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas and Proaxis Therapy to offer sports performance training within a medical context. In 2008, GHS purchased ASI for the purpose of training professional, collegiate, and high school athletes, the general population and exercise medicine population within the institute for musculoskeletal health and wellness.

ProgramsThroughout my experience at ASI I was able to develop strength and conditioning programs for the athletes like the one shown in the previous slideImplementing programs was a lot of fun, but was also the source of vast amounts of stress because you want the workouts and the clients to work in sync with each other

Training

Difficulty in writing programsWhen writing programs for individuals, you must take into account any injuries that the athlete may be experience. In the previous video, a young athlete is working on lateral movement and quick twitch muscle firing However, this workout is a result of his lack of functionality with his wrist. The lateral shuffles on the Bosu ball were just implemented because he could not apply pressure to his wrists.

Creativity on the job

Creativity on the jobWorking at ASI has given me a lot of different opportunities to display my creative side. For example, for a change-of-direction day, instead of doing our work in the courtyard like we normally do, I decided to have the athletes run routes insteadDoing this not only created spontaneity within the workout, but it also gave the athletes a better understanding of how the workouts related to on-the-field performance.

Who Do We Train?Although ASI was founded by professional athletes, athletes only make up 34% of the members of ASI.The other 66% are made up of, first responders, exercise medicine, and fitness clients. These types of individuals are also known as members of the general population.

My RolesWhile at ASI, some of the duties and responsibilities that I was in charge of was included Coaching/training athletesCreate and implement training programsMaintain a clean and safe work environment

Coach/Train AthletesASI trains athletes from all different age levels starting at 13 years oldDuring the summer, the athletes will have a stronghold on the facilities from around 8:00am-11:30amAthletes are not broken up based on age, but rather on skill level

Creating/Implementing ProgramsWhen creating a progam, several factors must be consideredCan the lifts/movements be completed by all types of clients Are the lifts working the types of muscles that are needed.Do you as a trainer have a basic knowledge of all of the lifts so that you can explain any difficult statements to members of the gym?

Future EmploymentAfter completing this summer internship at ASI, I feel like the best quality to bring with you is a high self-esteem. You may not always be dealing with the most confident of people, so if you have a high self-esteem and positive attitude, then the clients will have no choice but to follow in your footstepsBeing able to communicate properly is also an important point. Even if your mode of communication is body language, it is important that you keep sending positive messages at all times
