OLLI at Aquinas WelcomesRetired Lt. General Thomas PlewesLt. Plewes was in the Pentagon on that fateful

day of September 11, 2001. He will tell his story

of how the events of that day impacted our

lives then and forever.

In its historic report, the 9/11 Commission called September 11, 2001 “a day of unprecedented shock and suffering in the history of the United States.” As we approach the tenth anniversary of this date, Lt. General Plewes, in his capacity of Chief of the Army Reserve, will retrace the events of that day and bring perspective to the decade that has followed. He has closely followed the work of the 9/11 Commission, the memorial activities, the families of the fallen, even the 9/11 deniers. He will discuss these subjects.

Modern Europe Part I

Craig Benjamin, Ph.D., is an associate professor of history at GVSU. A very popular OLLI presenter, he is the author of numerous published articles, chapters and books on ancient Central Asian history and world history historiography.

This two-part course will examine the major events and developments that have affected Europe from the Second World War to the present. We will focus in particular on the political, economic, cultural, and social changes that Europe has undergone over the past seven decades. Part I will explore WWII and the immediate post-war period (1939-48), decolonization, political history of post-war Western Europe and cultural history of post-war Western Europe. Look for the continuation of Dr. Benjamin’s class in the OLLI Spring 2012 catalog.

Ben Lockerd, professor of English at GVSU, holds an M.A. from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He is a published writer whose most recent book and

essay are the Aethereal Rumours: T.S. Eliot’s Physics and Poetics and Eliot in Context respectively.

T.S. Eliot is generally regarded as one of the two or three greatest poets in the 20th century. His poems continue to be read and discussed all over the world today. Participants in this course will learn about Eliot’s life and talk about some of his major works, including “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” The Waste Land, and Four Quartets.


Lighthouses of Michigan

Matthew Daley, Ph.D., is associate professor of history at GVSU. Dr. Daley’s research focuses on urban public and social policy, Great Lakes maritime culture and technology, and public history. He is editor of the Grand Rapids Historical Society’s magazine Grand River Valley History.

Standing as lonely sentinels along the coasts and harbors throughout Michigan, lighthouses serve as enduring reminders of Michigan’s maritime heritage and operate as popular tourist attractions. The stories of keepers and storms give them a well-deserved aura of romance and adventure. Yet, we hear less of the efforts to plan, construct, and manage this enormous nation-wide system. This course draws these pieces together to tell the stories of Michigan’s lighthouses.


The Bhagavad Gita: A Hindu New Testament

Fred Stella, writer and lecturer, is an ordained Pracharak (Outreach Minister) for the Hindu Temple in Grand Rapids. He is currently president of Interfaith Dialogue Association, and hosts its weekly radio program.

In this class, Fred will examine what many call Hinduism’s most beloved scripture and show how it came to redefine the Hindu Dharma. He will introduce students to the cultural and spiritual elements of Hinduism (the Gita), the world’s oldest surviving religion.

Jean Reed Bahle has been involved in theatre in West Michigan for over 40 years as an actor, director, writer, and teacher. She has worked with Hope Summer Repertory Theatre, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, and Circle Theatre and most prominently with Actors’ Theatre. She has taught at GRCC, Aquinas College and has served as adjunct faculty in the theatre department at Hope College for the past 15 years.

What is the “Self?” Is it identity, ego, personality or character? We have many names for it, and in this experiential class, we will look through the lens of acting to begin to answer that question. Using selected exercises culled from

Marnie Kotwick is a physical therapist with Gentiva Home Health Care. She teaches T’ai Chi which was a recent popular OLLI class. Marnie is a guest lecturer in many physical therapy college programs.

Posture and body alignment will be emphasized in this floor exercise program designed to build strength while keeping bones safe. No previous exercise experience is necessary and reluctant exercisers are welcome. Progression will be individually paced. Bring a large towel and padded exercise floor mat. Guided meditation and relaxation breathing will provide rest breaks between short intervals of exercise.

Brazil Comes of Age


Sept. 13 & 20

David Stark is an associate professor of history at GVSU. His area of expertise is the Spanish Caribbean. He has taught a variety of courses for OLLI including Castro and Cuba, United States Interventions in Latin America, and What’s Wrong with Haiti.

As the host of 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, Brazil is a country that will be frequently in the news the next few years. Few people are aware that Brazil is the fifth largest nation in terms of population and size, and has the most advanced industrial base in Latin America. Professor Stark will cover Brazil’s colonial past to Brazil today.


Autumn on Maple Hill

Mary O’Connor is a writer and amateur cook living on a small organic farm in West Michigan. Maple Hill farm is a life change from the successful marketing company she owned in the Detroit area. Detroit’s loss is most certainly OLLI’s gain as Mary is becoming one of OLLI’s popular presenters.

If you love food, here’s your chance to see where it all begins. Join us for a harvest-season visit to Mary O’Connor’s Maple Hill farm. We’ll tour the garden, meet all of the animals, then head off to the kitchen to learn basic food

preservation, canning and drying techniques. Best of all, Mary will teach us how to make her delicious oven-candied tomatoes. Afterward, we’ll sit under the maple trees, talk about life, and sample the fruits of our labor.

Dr. Shirley Kane Lewis was a professor at Aquinas College for over 20 years as well as the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. She has received awards for teaching at Western Michigan University and Aquinas College, as well as the Board of Trustee’s Award and the Norbert J. Hruby Emeritus Award.

This writing workshop will teach students how to write their personal life stories. It is an enjoyable process that uses metaphors for life, such as a flowing river or a journey along a stormy path. Beginners and experienced writers alike will be able to see their own lives through these metaphors, identifying important people, pathways, and experiences that shape our lives. Two additional sessions have been added to give students more confidence in their writing.

Karin Turmelle is a master gardener whose interest in edible landscaping led her to complete the certificate program in organic farming at MSU in 2009. The experience gave her a renewed reverence for the food we eat.

This course will provide an introduction to the wonderfully

complex world of how we sustain ourselves. Demystify the current buzzwords (organic, CSA, GMO, hormone-free, foodshed) with information you can use to make informed choices as you shop. What we eat matters!

Belief and Doubt – Why Religion Matters

Rev. Maurice A. Fetty, a graduate of Minnesota Bible College, holds a Masters of Theology, a Master of Divinity and a Masters of Arts. Rev. Fetty, now retired, spent the majority of his career as minister of Mayflower Congregational Church in Grand Rapids. He is the author of 13 books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles. He continues to lecture and is a frequent guest preacher.

Rev. Fetty will examine the importance of belief in a time of scientific and atheistic doubt and the significance of doubt in a time of religious resurgence and fanaticism. Using Huston Smith’s book, Why Religion Matters, as a primary source, he will discuss the insights of science, philosophy, theology, history and comparative religions to address what Smith calls “the fate of the human spirit in an age of disbelief.”


Conflict in Northern Ireland

Dr. Ian M. Borton is assistant professor of communication at Aquinas College. His research has focused on conflict, mediation, and how interpersonal dialogue can help to foster collaborative resolution. Dr. Borton has lived and worked in Northern Ireland. His work was recently published in Conflict Resolution Quarterly.

Dr. Borton will discuss the historical and contemporary issues faced by Northern Ireland. He will begin with a study of conflict theory to lay the groundwork for discussion on the Northern Irish conflict. This conflict will be traced through periods of unrest and relative stability. Dr. Borton will broaden the discussion to several other contemporary and historical intercultural and inter-ethnic conflicts.

Thomas R. Dilley is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Nebraska, College of Law. Mr. Dilley has been a frequent lecturer in local history. One of his many published works is Grand Rapids in Vintage Postcards: 1890 -1940.

Be prepared to step back and on history! Tom Dilley will present a historical perspective of cemeteries beginning with 1800 European influences to the colonial era to the settlement of the upper Midwest. Be prepared to walk!

From the Womb to the Tomb: Unraveling the Mysteries of Human Genetics

Dr. James Higgins and Kathleen Delp are genetic specialists. Dr. Higgins is a retired Cytogenetics Laboratory director from Spectrum Health. Prior to that, he was a professor of human genetics at MSU. He also directed the MSU Cytogenetics Laboratory and Genetics Clinic.

Kathleen Delp is a Spectrum Health genetic counselor, specializing in adult onset conditions. She also teaches at the MSU College of Human Medicine.

This course will introduce the basic principles of inheritance for common conditions like cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and Huntington Disease. Dr. Higgins and Ms. Delp will explore an understanding of how genes relate to our physical and mental health and explain the role of environment in the expression of these genes. Nature or nurture?? Is it either/or both? With changes in genetic diagnostics testing and treatment options, will decision making become easier or more difficult?

Gleaves Whitney is director of GVSU’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies. He is a scholar who writes and lectures nationally and is a popular OLLI instructor.

On September 15, Gleaves Whitney will present the first of his Presidential Lecture Series on Franklin D. Roosevelt. This lecture series on America’s modern presidents will continue throughout the academic year. Join Gleaves this session for his talks on Harry S. Truman (Sept. 29), Dwight D. eisenhower (Oct. 13), and John F. Kennedy (Oct. 20).

Ancient Greek Tragedy Part II

Greg Carnevale taught Latin and ancient Greek at City High School and East Grand Rapids High School. Greg was also an associate professor of Latin at Aquinas College.

Continuing an introduction to ancient Greek tragedy, the focus will be on the third tragedian, euripides (c.480-406 B.C.), and his play, Troades, or Trojan Women. Poignant, pitiful, wrenching, universal in its treatment of the defeated and the conquerors, it pursues the ageless question of war in all of its brutality and its consequences.

Gil Davis, professor emeritus at GVSU, has been writing and presenting opera previews in West Michigan for the past 30 years as well as teaching courses in opera and poetry.

Gil Davis will preview 6 of the operas that will be playing at the Metropolitan Opera this fall season. The performances at the Met are shown in Saturday matinees at area cinemas in HD. On October 6, he will preview Donizetti’s Anna Bolena and Mozart’s Don Giovanni; on October 27, Wagner’s Siegfried and Glass’ Satyagraha; and on November 17, Handel’s Rodelinda and Gounod’s

Faust. He will also give a short preview of the Grand Rapids’ fall production of Trovatore.

Scott Stabler has his Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University and teaches in the history department at GVSU. Scott recently returned from a sabbatical in Ghana.

“War is politics by another means,” -Carl Von Clausewitz.

In the 19th century, four major wars took place in the United States which would solidify us as a “first world” country and set the foundation for our role as a world power in the 20th Century. The War of 1812 was the last time a foreign army would invade the U.S. The Mexican American War doubled our nation’s size. The Civil War proved to be the bloodiest war. And the Spanish American War served as America’s launch into imperialism. Professor Stabler will discuss these wars in relation to American expansionism in pursuit of world power and supremacy.

Gary Konow, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Theatre and Communication Arts has served in a variety of capacities at Aquinas College since 1967, including provost, until his retirement in 2003. Gary began collecting antique toys in 1992 and co-authored the book, Wyandotte Toys Are Good and Safe.

Dr. Konow will discuss antique toys from the 1920’s to the 1950’s, how the toy industry flourished during the Depression and events that have challenged older toy companies. Bring a toy to class!

Senior Community Resource Panel Discussion

The objective of this discussion is to educate the community’s senior population about the resources available to them. The panel will feature these local experts: Laurie Murphy, attorney at Miller Johnson specializing in elder law; Karen Bugg, MSW RN St. Mary’s Hauenstein Center Neuroscience; and Elizabeth Zeldas, CPA, financial counsel. This panel will identify common pitfalls many seniors face.

15 Years of Contemporary Writers: A Celebration

Linda Nemec Foster received a BA from Aquinas and a MFA in creative writing from Goddard College in Vermont. She has authored nine poetry collections and served as the first poet laureate of Grand Rapids. In 1997, she founded the Contemporary Writers Series at Aquinas College.

Acclaimed Irish poet Seamus Heaney visited Aquinas College as part of the Contemporary Writers Series. After his extraordinary reading to over 600 literary fans, Heaney stated that the CWS was one of the best reading series in the U.S. Learn about its fascinating history from its very own founder!

Sara J. Smolenski graduated from the University of Michigan and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She was elected 63rd District Court Judge in 1990 and appointed Chief Judge by the Michigan Supreme Court in 1996. She is highly involved in professional and community organizations and has received numerous awards and accolades – most recently the 2009 YWCA Tribute Award for Community Service.

Judge Smolenski will share the “life of a Court Judge” as only she can. Her humorous takes and delightful storytelling will inform and entertain!

Dr. Roger Durham is chair of the Political Science Department at Aquinas. He teaches international relations and comparative politics courses and coordinates the International Studies Degree.

Despite gaining sovereignty in 1804, Haitian history is characterized by overwhelming political and economic instability. Rules, Incidents & Golf’s Governing Bodies

Mark Wilson is the head golf professional at Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids. As a member of the PGA of American Rules Committee, and the committee chairman for the past 6 years, Mark has officiated 21 PGA Championships, 15 Masters Tournaments, 4 U.S. Opens, and 7 Ryder Cup Matches.

Mark will examine the similarities and differences between five of golf’s major governing bodies: The U.S. Golf Association; the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews Scotland; the PGA of America; the PGA Tour; and Augusta National Golf Club. Video clips of “tour” incidents will be viewed and analyzed. If you enjoyed Mark’s previous presentation for OLLI, you are sure to be enlightened by this class.


Run Ted Run: An Inside Look at Basketball

Ted Hillary has officiated over 1,185 NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball games. Most have been of the Big Ten and Big 12 variety. Ted has become one of the most requested referees in college basketball.

Join Ted as he covers the new rule changes for the 2011-12 college basketball season. He will give you an official’s perspective and also discuss the relationship between a college coach and the official. Be entertained and informed by Ted’s stories.

Steve LaWarre, Director of Horticulture at Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, earned his BS from Eastern Illinois University in botany. Steve has worked with production greenhouses in the Midwest.

Find inspiration, tips, and ideas from Grand Rapids’ own expert horticulturist, Steve LaWarre. With the temperatures cooling down, he will show you how to extend the season and also get ready for the spring blooms. He will give great hints on planting some bold perennials which will perk up your garden for the spring season. Our students loved him here before so we know you will again.


Unavoidable Suffering—Myth, Meaning,and Management

Dr. Adrian Lineberger is an anesthesiologist and the Medical Director for Integrated Pain Services at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.

“Pain is inevitable, Suffering is optional”; pain is a dynamic personal experience modified by history, culture, and the complex perspective of the one who suffers. Dr. Lineberger will explore the philosophical and physiological aspects of pain, as well as insights into the individual perception of pain. Lastly, he will examine conservative and alternative treatments used today. If you attended this popular class last year, come again as much will be new and different!

Sister Sue Tracy OP has been a Dominican sister for over fifty years. She is the chaplain at Spectrum Hospital, where she ministers cancer patients and their families. She is an author and speaks on a variety of topics.

Julian of Norwich, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Trudy the Bag Lady, Dorothy Day and Mary of Nazareth all had lives that left legacies well worth our time and reflection. Each met struggles and grew through them. Sister Sue Tracy will use video vignettes to help deepen your awareness of these women.


Secret Agent Woman!

Kimberly Cheatle has been a Secret Service agent for 17 years. Her work includes criminal investigations into identity theft, mortgage fraud and counterfeit currency. Kimberly has served on protective details, including the Vice President’s from 2000-2006.

Agent Cheatle will discuss what a career with the Secret Service encompasses. Her investigations into the various types of counterfeit currency will surprise you; you’ll learn what security features exist for genuine currency. Learn how and why identity theft cases continue to rise. Bring your questions and feel free to bring a child or grandchild who may show interest in such a career path.
