OLLI at ISU’s Purpose
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Indiana State University (OLLI at ISU) is a non-profit, membership
organization open to all adults but geared towards individuals age 50 and older, regardless of academic background.
At its center are learning programs designed by its members and tailored to suit their interests. These programs
(lectures, courses, and special events) are offered without concern for grades, credits, or prerequisites. Indeed, the
only requirement for membership in the Institute is a desire to learn.
The Institute emphasizes collaborative leadership and active member participation. The primary responsibilities for
programs are assumed by Institute members, all of whom volunteer their time. However, it is only because of the
substantial support of the Bernard Osher Foundation and Indiana State University that the Institute can offer these
unique learning opportunities to residents of the Wabash Valley. The Osher Institute is also affiliated with the
Exploritas (Elderhostel Information Network).

with OLLI at ISU!!
Ruth Erickson - The Treasures of the Metropolitan Museum course was a joy ...so good to learn of great art and history from the
video lecture AND Harriet McNeal!! This format is a great addition to the type of offerings OLLI has ...let's have lots more.
Olga Llewellyn - I enjoyed all the day trips. OLLI means meeting new friends, re-acquainting myself with old ones. Also very
informative information....especially enjoyed the Wednesday presentations at Westminster Village & the Landsbaum Center.
Great programs!
Judy Williams - Two programs I really enjoyed are the Feline Rescue Center; it was partly because of the cats, but also it
contributed money to their care and feeding. The annual meeting at the Indiana Theatre gave people the opportunity to have a
tour without paying a lot of money or dressing up for a fancy dinner, show, or program. Last year I went with OLLI and First
Gold Club to IKEA and Jungle Jim's with a stop at Sherman House for dinner; very nice full day.
Pat Creasey - The OLLI programs that I have enjoyed and most benefited from were related to "better health." As we begin to
age, this becomes of more concern. The program on "Music Therapy" was excellent and enjoyable as we shared songs and
stories with the presenter. The "Nutrition Your Way" program offered some new and unique suggestions for better health. It was
just one of many informative, helpful programs presented by the OLLI and the Maple Center. Dr. Marlow's presentation titled
Using Your Mind to Direct Your Body to Promote Healing & Reduce your Pain was extremely meaningful and educational. I
don't have health problems or chronic pain, but attending these programs provides information I can share with others. Using the
Landsbaum Health Center for programs is special because there are no parking problems and it's a short walk into the building.
The wide range of program topics offered by OLLI is well planned by the members of OLLI. The music and drama programs,
often provided through ISU, are especially appealing. Attending with OLLI friends is much better than attending alone. The
programs held at Westminster are always entertaining; there is no charge and parking is free. Attending OLLI programs gives me
pleasure, educates me in many new fields, and helps to keep me young! I encourage anyone who doesn't want to be isolated nor
to grow stale to become a member of OLLI (the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). Are we ever too old to experience learning
or to have a good time with friends? It takes many hard-working folks to present these program "opportunities," and I thank each
participant and especially the dedicated Program Administrator, Michelle Bennett.
Sam & Jo Ligget - We very much enjoyed the trip to see the Terra Cotta Warrior Exhibit at the Indianapolis Children's
Museum. What a rare opportunity!
Jeanne Frost - Water aerobics is fun and provides a great workout. Everyone works at their own pace. There is no pressure to
do any more than you feel able to do. The instructor is experienced and knowledgeable. The classes allow me to do exercises that
I could not do on land. I've been to similar classes elsewhere, but they did not match up to the quality provided by OLLI.
I encourage anyone who has difficulty with other forms of exercise to give this a try.
Ann Tornese - We love the OLLI courses, presentations, & special events because they offer a variety of experiences that we
could not get on our own from behind the scenes at the filming of TNT Network’s show “Cold Justice” which included our local
law enforcement officials, to sampling ethnic dishes which are not on the menus at our local family-owned restaurants, to
learning about art, music, current events, history, etc. not only locally but around the world. We have had fabulous speakers &
innovative programs which appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds. Where could anyone experience that kind of variety
without leaving the area & at such an affordable price?

This course is in conjunction with an Indiana State
University Class. OLLI members will attend Wednesday
evening class with Indiana State University students. You are
not required to attend every session. This course will look at
the ideological rivalry between Communism and democratic
capitalism known as the “Cold War” that drove historical
events in the last half of the 20th century. Centered on two
superpowers, the United State and the Soviet Union, the
world divided into two opposing camps, armed for nuclear
Armageddon.
Proceeding chronologically through the historical landmarks
of the Cold War and its aftermath, we will consider how the
bipolar division of the world affected political, cultural,
technological, and social trends from the Communist
takeover of Eastern Europe, the building of the Berlin Wall,
and the Cuban missile crisis. With the end of the Soviet
Union in 1991 we will also look at the post-Soviet world
with the rise of radical Islamic terrorism. We will assess the
nature of the superpower conflict, question and critique the
political behavior behind key events, and discuss the society,
psychology, and culture created by the tensions of the era,
from the spy-craft of the James Bond era to the suicide
bombings of recent terrorist acts.

What makes a structure a building, bridge, or tower great?
The phrase "great structure" might bring to mind structures
famous for their age, their size, their beauty, or all three:
Egypt's pyramids, France's Gothic cathedrals, or New York's
skyscrapers, just to name a few. But from an engineer's
perspective, greatness is not just a matter of aesthetics. In
fact, most engineers agree with the pronouncement by
Vitruvius, a 1st-century B.C. Roman architect-engineer. “To
be considered great,” Vitruvius said in his treatise De
Architectura, “a construction must be exemplary in its form,
function, or structure.” This course will focus on two types of
great structures Cantilever Bridges and Skyscrapers. In this
course, we will not only study the principles of form,
function, and structure the "why" that made these particular
structures great. We will also look at the "how" of their
Construction. After all, the only thing more awe inspiring
than seeing a great structure is understanding the complex
and beautiful principles behind its construction.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a long history of offering
interactive, videoconference-based learning. Our course will be taught by a
group of Museum study group leaders, who are seasoned volunteer
videoconference presenters deeply familiar with the Museum’s collections

experience, paired with Museum-provided training, has prepared them to be responsive to your interests and facile leaders of
discussion.
Artists give us a unique window on American life, reflecting the cultural, social, and political climate of the time in which they
work. What can we learn about America through its art? OLLI members will examine America through the eyes of artists in three
sessions, each focused on a separate era:
Early America: Made as Americans transformed themselves from colonists to citizens of a new nation, early American art tells
the story of national ambitions, territorial expansion, and the beginnings of industry. OLLI Members will explore the historical
context of the creation of our nation, as well as the resulting political infrastructure and economic development through artworks
from colonial to Jacksonian America.
Wars At Home and Abroad: Beginning with the Civil War and stretching through WWII, artists’ depictions of America during
troubled times reflect a changing national identity. Themes may include the effect of the Civil War on soldiers, families, and
African Americans; the ideas and debate related to plans to reconstruct America; the Great Depression and WPA programs; and the
World War II home front experience.
Contemporary Life: America entering the post-War era experienced a boom time colored by global uncertainty. Artists grappled
with how to reflect America’s changing social and political landscape: some raised questions about the value of art history, while
others confronted issues of race and gender inequality. Themes may include works made in response to various movements (Civil
Rights, social justice movements like the Farm Workers boycotts, the feminist movement, the role of technology in modern life)
and works that ask us: “What is an American today?”

an ISU Society and Aging class
taught by Tina Kruger. OLLI participates will join with this
class on Sept 11, Oct 16, and Nov 20, 2014. This will be a
round table discussion between ISU students and OLLI
participants on subjects about human rights and the
environment.
Over three meeting we will discuss: What are the basic rights
of a human being and how are those rights determined and
protected? How do different age groups influence the
environment? We will also explore ways to use photography
to identify and address local challenges, by sharing
photographs taken by participants in this course and discuss
the challenges that were identified and potential solutions to
those challenges. At the end we will discuss ways that
intergenerational groups might work together to address local
challenges related to the environment and to promote human
rights. What factors facilitate intergenerational activities that
can promote both human rights and sustainability?

Vincennes in the 1780s
Professor William W. Giffin will
talk about the lives of people in
Vincennes and in the Wabash Valley during the 1780s. The
Vincennes area was occupied by native people like the
Piankashaws, French inhabitants, and settlers from the East.
Each of these three communities possessed different cultures
and different views regarding land ownership. The lecture
will address the question: How did ethnic friction and rival
land claims shape the lives of the people of these three
communities in and around Vincennes during the 1780s?
Territory to Statehood
When did Indiana become a territory? What other states were
included in the territory? How did Indiana make the change
from territory to state? These and other questions will be
answered.
Saint Mother Theodore Guerin
Sister Jan Craven will talk about St. Mother Theodore,
beginning with some highlights of her childhood, her life as a
Sister of Providence in France, her journey to America, the
years of pain and growth, missions that were opened, her
struggles with health and money. Finally she will talk about
St. Mother Theodore’s writings and death.

The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
Book - The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1955

living in 1950s New York City using his
"talents"—forgery, lying and impersonation.
Movie - Purple Noon is a 1960 film directed by René
Clément, based on the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley
by Patricia Highsmith. The film stars Alain Delon in his first
major film.
Devil in the Blue Dress by Walter Mosley
Book - Los Angeles, 1948: Easy Rawlins is a
black war veteran just fired from his job at a
defense plant. Easy is wondering how he'll meet
his mortgage, when a white man in a linen suit

Movie - Denzel Washington turns up the heat as a private eye

emphasis on its truly catastrophic nature, particularly in
Europe. The historian Paul Fussell has written that “Every
war is ironic because every war is worse than expected, but
the Great War was more ironic than any before or after.” Just
how bad it was is one of the themes of this lecture.
Lecture number two’s themes will be the causes and the
course of this great conflict; it will also examine the recent
literature and scholarship about these subjects.
The third class will discuss the war’s final years, the entrance
of the U.S. into it, the controversial peace treaty which ended
it, and the great changes in the world brought about by this
“WAR TO END ALL WARS.”
Great American Music:
Broadway Musicals With Colleen Davis, ISU Associate Professor of Music and
Chris Berchild ISU Associate Professor of Theater
Date/Time: Thursdays, November 13 & 20, 2014
from 2 - 4 PM
Place: TBA
Cost: $10 (See Special Offer on page 5)
Maximum: 20
Deadline for Registration is October 30, 2014!
In conjunction with the Great Courses DVD series Great
American Music: Broadway Musicals, Colleen and Chris
will focus on the 1940’s, 50’s, & 70’s to present. These time
periods gave us some of the most popular musicals to hit
Broadway. In the 1940’s Rodgers & Hammerstein reigned
with musicals such as Oklahoma!, Carousel, & South
Pacific. The 1950’s were called the Golden Age of Musical
Theater with such classics as My Fair Lady, The King & I,
The Sound of Music, & Guys & Dolls. The final years of the
20th century saw the development of the concept musical, a
genre created by, among others, Stephen Sondheim, and
exemplified by such shows as Cats & A Chorus Line. The
late 1990s and early 21st century seemed to bring back a
much needed light touch with shows such as The Producers
and Wicked.
Are you mentally humming or singing some your favorite
songs from these great musicals? If so this is the class for
you!!!

Shakespeare in Tuscany and Santa Monica:
Two Recent Films of Much Ado About Nothing With Tom Sauer, ISU Professor Emeritus
Date/Time: Tuesday, November 18, 2014
from 9 AM - 4:30 PM
Place: Westminster Village, Media Room
Cost: $15 (See Special Offer on page 5)
Maximum: 20
Deadline for Registration is November 11, 2014!
In 1993, the British director and actor Kenneth Branagh released his adaptation of Shakespeare’s popular comedy Much Ado
About Nothing (1599), with a cast of international film stars and setting the action in a villa in Tuscany ca. 400 years ago. In 2013,
the American director Joss Whedon released his adaptation of Much Ado, with a cast of actors from Whedon’s various
television series and setting the action in his own house in Santa Monica, California, today. These two very different films of
Shakespeare’s witty play demonstrate the richness of Shakespeare’s humor and psychological insight while also showing how
Shakespeare “translates” so effectively to the cinematic style of a full color international epic or a black and white American
screwball comedy.
Neither film presumes prior familiarity with Shakespeare’s play. The goal of the course is to increase our appreciation and
understanding of Shakespeare based on our experience of these two delightful but very different film versions of Much Ado.
The class will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 PM with a break for lunch from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM available on site.
9:00-9:30 Introductory Remarks on Shakespeare’s play and on Branagh’s film
9:30-11:40 Viewing of Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing (with 10-minute intermission)
11:40:12:00 Initial Discussion of Branagh’s film
12:00-1:00 Lunch with continuing discussion
1:00-1:15 Introductory Remarks on Whedon’s film
1:15-3:25 Viewing of Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing (with 10-minute intermission)
3:25-4:30 Discussion of Whedon’s film, comparison and contrast of both films, and reflections on Shakespeare

to make a mark in popular music, so classically trained
South Florida twosome, Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste and Kevin
“Kev Marcus” Sylvester, who go by the name Black Violin
are a welcome revelation for their ability to meld highbrow
and pop culture into a single genre-busting act. The band’s
most recent album, Classically Trained, is a good
introduction to their ground-breaking blend of classical,
hip-hop, rock, R&B, and even bluegrass music.
Live, they are often accompanied by their crack band,

Deadline for Registration is October 14, 2014!!
Yuletide Madrigal Feaste
presented by the Indiana
State University School
of Music. Now in its 67th
year, the ISU Madrigal
Dinners are a re-creation
of the Renaissance feasts
held in the great baronial
halls throughout England during the twelve days of
Christmas. If you lived in England during the Sixteenth
century and were lucky enough to be one of the favored
guests, you would be dazzled with the stunning pageantry,
bawdy humor, endless amounts of succulent food, and
extraordinary music. The line between sacred and secular
would be thinly drawn. One moment you might be regaled
with the most risqué humor and the next you might listen to,
or sing, the most exquisite and ethereal sacred music.
Performers will include the ISU Sycamore Singers and Brass
Quintet. The meal, catered by Boo’s Crossroads Café, will
include traditional wassail, cranberry Christmas salad,
roasted pork loin, breaded stuffing, roasted red potatoes,
green beans, rolls, and black forest cake. Wine will be
available for purchase prior to the festivities.
