COLLEGE PRAYER
Gracious Lord, I pray for the grace to hold You first above all else. Free my mind to think of you before all else, my heart to love you above all else, my wallet to serve you above all else. Open my eyes to see You in the hungry, My ears to hear You in the cries of the thirsty, My hands to serve You in the needy – For whatever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters We know now we do for You. —Fr. J. Michael Sparough, SJ

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear O’Loughlin Community, Is there really only two and a half weeks to go?! This seems incredible but there is no doubt – the Presentation Afternoon starts at 3pm on Wednesday December 13 at the Darwin Entertainment Centre and it concludes the school year. Also, this Friday we celebrate the achievements of our Year 12s at our Graduation Mass and Dinner. The Mass begins at 5pm at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Cathedral and the Dinner at 6.30pm at the Convention Centre. There seems to be so much happening and it is exciting. This morning our Year 11s began their Transition to Year 12 week and there was a palpable buzz and energy. The College is looking forward to sharing in what will be a brilliant year for this group. Year 10s are stoically and carefully completing their exams and the Middle School is completing all final assessments. Next week O’Loughlin is running a Transition Week for all Middle School. Year 7s will begin Year 8 work with Year 8 teachers, Year 8s will begin Year 9, and Year 9s will, of course, begin Year 10. We are determined to make this week a success as we prepare our students and staff for the 2018 academic year. Creative Arts Night and O’Loughlin Day have come and gone and what amazing successes they were. A heartfelt congratulations and thank you to Ms Joanne Green and her Creative Arts team who prepared and ran the Creative Arts Night last Friday. It was another brilliant event. It showcased the outstanding work and efforts of our students and it was really wonderful to share in such a strong sense of community on the night. Thanks to all parents, friends and staff for joining in the celebrations. Our College Advisory Board meets tonight for the last time for this year. I sincerely thank Fr Roy O’Neil, Anthony Burton, Kim Leslie, Tania Jong, Kris Harris, Paul Maher, Chantelle Barrett and Jason Tutty (Staff Rep) for their support, advice and wisdom. Also, it is with sadness that we farewell Anthony and Paul as they step down from their roles. They have been wonderful members of the Board and will be missed. If you are interested in being on the Board in 2018, please let me know! Please keep well as we come to the end of the school year. Keep supporting your children and we will keep striving to be the best we can be. All the best. Mr Rhett Bowden

GENERAL NEWS
O’Loughlin Day Our Year 10 STEM students worked with the pre-school kids at Rainbows Childcare at Holy Family. The STEM students used ‘Makey Makey’ controllers and games they programmed themselves to create interesting and interactive learning experiences. Our thanks to go Ngaree Ah Kit, Member for Karama, and Luke Gosling, Federal Member for Solomon, for funding the Makey Makey controllers.
Thanks to all the year 10 and 11 students who came along to Nakara Primary and Pre-school on O'Loughlin Day and helped run science experiments for all the kids. They all had a great time - preschoolers and primary school kids love the chance to interact with their older peers. It was extra special for the year 6 Nakara Primary kids who are coming to O'Loughlin in 2018.

GENERAL NEWS
O’Loughlin Day Thank You A special thanks to Dean Breward and the team at BOC Gas and Gear in Winnellie for supplying liquid nitrogen and dry ice for O’Loughlin Day. It’s not the cheapest way to make ice cream but it’s tasty and it sure is fun. Thanks to Luke Gosling, Federal Member for Solomon, and Lauren Moss, Member for Casuarina, who sponsored liquid nitrogen ice cream and dry ice experiments at Nakara Primary and Preschool for O’Loughlin Day. Tasty and fun.

FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY
Australian Mathematics Trust Awards Night
O’Loughlin student recognised at the 2017 Australian Mathematics Trust Award Night
Last Wednesday night our very own Mathematics teacher, John Bament, hosted the 2017 Australian Mathematics Trust Awards at Charles Darwin University. One of the students being recognised for excellence in Mathematics was Michael Fagan in Year Nine at O’Loughlin.
Earlier in the year, Michael sat the Australian Mathematics competition which asks students to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking and questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to even the most gifted students. S ye
Michael was awarded a High Distinction for his result in the competition which meant he scored in the top 3% of his year level in the NT! An amazing effort and a big congratulations to Michael – not only for achieving such a prestigious award – but also for the enthusiasm and passion he has for Mathematics.
Below are two questions from the paper – see if you can work them out!
2017 Top Assessment and Assignments
There have been a number of wonderful assessment pieces completed for Mathematics in Middle school this year. The following are just a small selection from some of our students.
Probability – creative spinners from the Year 7’s Geometric Reasoning – Year 7 Angle Artists
Linear Relationships Year 9 “Selfie”
