Dear Parishioners,

“Let’s journey together from ashes to glory.”

The account of the Transfi guration that we hear in the Gospel this weekend is mystical and profound. Peter, James and John were witnesses to this revelation of Jesus’ divine presence. The conversion the Lord is calling us to requires complete reliance on the conviction that Jesus is the beloved son.

In any given week we get glimpses into the transfor-mative power of Jesus Christ. It can happen at liturgy, or the moment we sense God calling us to generosity of spirit. It can happen when we experience reconcili-ation and seek to heal a broken relationship. It can happen when we are deeply moved by a simple act of kindness. It can happen when we choose to release ourselves from the grip of anger or resentment.

Lent is a season of grace. It is not too late to get started. Lent began earlier than usual so don’t feel bad if you haven’t launched your Lenten plan. Start now! I really would recommend getting a copy of the Magnifi cat Lenten Companion, which is available at the altar rail. It has a daily suggested penance which is very easy to fi t in a busy day and helps you feel like you are really doing something. It works for me. The daily refl ections are beautiful.

We are invited to the Lenten Mission at St. Catherine Laboure. Fr. Rich Simon of Relevant Radio and the pastor of St. Lambert’s will be delivering the Mission Sunday and Monday evening. He is a very good speaker. Check it out!

We are devoting our almsgiving this year to the organization Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH). There are almsgiv-ing bags at the exits. NPH is a network of orphanages and community outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. They seek to support orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children.

This week I received some wonderful letters of gratitude for your generous support. Our parishio-ner Lowell Wallace is the project manager for the

Baby Bottle Project of The Women’s Centers. All that change you placed in those baby bottles amounted to $3300. Thank you! Fr. Tom Belanger, Pastor of St. Philip Neri, is so grateful for our recent contribution to his parish from our First Fruits program.

This Sunday evening is our annual Volunteer Appreciation Mass. It is the one time of the year we say thank you to the hundreds of parishioners who share in the ministry of the parish. I am continually amazed at the commit-ment and devotion of so many to make sure the sick are visited, our liturgies are prayerful, our children are formed and families in need assisted. I am grateful to Mike Hood and the Parish Pastoral Council that plan this wonderful gathering.

On March 10 there will be a meeting of the parish councils of OLPH, St. Norbert and St Catherine Laboure. We just want to get to know one another and to listen to one another about the issues that face each parish. We are part of the same grouping of parishes in the Renew My Church initiative.

Happy Birthday Fr. Nick! May God bless you as you mark your 33rd year of life. We are grateful for all you bring to us through your priesthood.

May your Lent be blessed,Fr. Jerry Boland

OBSERVING LENT IN UNITY THROUGH FASTING

This is the third of our Lenten series of bulletin articles about Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”), a unique net-work of orphanage homes and community outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. NPH is dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children by delivering uncon-ditional love, comprehensive healthcare and a quality education. The goal is to help children overcome the poverty into which they were born and to develop them into productive citizens who become leaders in their own communities.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the average minimum daily food energy requirement is around 1,800 kilocalories (kcal) per person. The average daily kcal consump-tion per person in the U.S. comes to 3,750 kcal. Some Americans consume way more than that, and some way less. In Guatemala, the average daily kcal con-sumption per person is 2,150 kcal. To put this in per-spective, there are 151 countries in the world with an equal or higher average kcal consumption. The only other country in the western hemisphere with a lower average kcal consumption is Haiti. Every Guatemalan who consumes the U.S. average of 3,750 kcal a day

means that another Guatemalan is consuming an average of 550 kcal a day in order to maintain the Guatemalan national average of 2,150 kcal.

Try fasting for 24 hours, or even just during daylight hours, and notice how your hunger starts to take over your thought process and impact your activ-ity. Imagine children going without food, or without suffi cient quantities food, for days at a time. It’s hard to prepare for your future through schooling if all you can focus on is your empty belly and when you will be able to fi ll it next.

Sadly, most children come to NPH homes having experienced prolonged hunger at some point in their lives. Many of them arrive in a state of malnutrition.

At NPH Guatemala, over 300 young people are given three nutritious and plentiful meals a day. Rice and beans are staples and are typically served at least once daily. The home strives to provide a healthy balance of fruits, vegetables and animal protein.

Offering your fasting up to God results in satisfying one of the three traditional Catholic pillars of observ-ing Lent (the other two pillars are prayer and giving alms). Please consider fasting in the name of the orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children of NPH as a means of observing Lent this year. If abstaining from food is not good for you due to age or health, consid-er making do with less of something else. Either way, make it sting a little.

It’s diffi cult to focus when you are hungry. Imagine what focusing is like when you are literally starving. What must it be like for a child to go to bed hungry, wake up hungry, eat no breakfast, and then head off to school? How does that child focus on his or her studies? How does that child learn when their stom-achs are growling? As you fast this Lent, think about these children. Focus your hunger in a way that will help you join in solidarity with hungry and malnour-ished children everywhere.

Help Wanted• Befriend a Family

Lent is underway and we are working to recruit more donors for our Befriend a Family effort providing support to families in need at holiday times. If you are interested, we will match you with a needy family and you can provide food gift cards - and maybe more - to provide for a brighter Easter holiday. This program helps families at our four sharing parishes as well as local families served by Sr. Paulanne. Donors choose the size family that works for them. The relationship remains on-going until the donor opts out or the fam-ily graduates from the program. Contact Stacy Dolan, [email protected], for more information.

Science and Religion ● Fr. John Kartje's Unique PerspectiveSunday, March 4, 4:00 pm ● McDonnell Hall

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church ● public invited

How can we balance the rigors of scientifi c inquiry with the faith required of a believer? Are the two really incompatible? This challenging problem has been debated through-out the ages, from the time of the Greeks through to modern times.

Many of the world’s greatest scientists were believers, including Italian Galileo Galilei, who paid the price when his scientifi c work confl icted with Church teachings. Charles Darwin provided convincing arguments for evolution and yet delayed releasing his writ-ings out of concern over the public’s reaction. So, how do we fi nd a way of embracing both scientifi c theory and our belief in God?

Fr. Kartje’s presentation is part of a “mini-camp” speaker series designed especially for young people and their families. Teens are invited to stay for a pizza dinner. Fr. Kartje will preside at the 6:00 Mass. All are welcome!

Support orphaned, abandoned, and at-risk children throughout Latin America and the Caribbean

This year during Lent, a group of twelve young people from NPH Guatemala, a home for orphaned, abandoned and at-risk youth will be welcomed into the homes of families from Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Throughout their stay they will participate in a folkloric music and dance tour to raiseawareness and funds at a variety of churches, businesses, and schools. The group will be in Chicago from March 1-19. The members of the group are in their late teens/early 20s, and they are very talented performers.

Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for Our Little Brothers and Sisters) was founded by a Catholic priest, Father William Wasson, in 1954. NPH is a unique network of homes and programs transforming the lives of vulnerable children in Latin America and the Caribbean. There are nine homes located in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru.

The out-of-control violence that plagues so many pockets of Chicago focuses on two elements: per-petrators and victims. Our criminal justice system involves laws and punishment. Very little energy of-fered to the victim or to the process of healing.
