The test received atten- tion this past year because of a new state law commonly referred to as the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The law requires third-grade students to be retained if they do not score 392 or better on the reading portion of the test. The change went into effect for the 2013-2014 school year. Last spring, 1,547 Olentangy third- grade students took the test. The Ohio Department of Education assessed a passing rate of more than 98 percent. Olentangy had the largest population of third-grade students with the highest passage rate in the state of Ohio. Intervention for students scor- ing below the passing score is being provided this summer. District officials are proud of the results. They point to intervention ef- forts Olentangy has used long before the Ohio Department of Education established its Third Grade Reading Guarantee. “It’s a reflection of the work our staff does to identify students who need individual intervention and deliver instruction to meet their needs,” said Olentangy Local Schools Curriculum Director Jack Fette. “The ultimate goal is a 100 per- cent passing rate,” added Olentangy Local Schools Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D. “I am extremely proud of the ef- forts of all our students and staff.” When classes begin August 13, Olentangy Local Schools expects to greet close to 19,000 new and returning students. SUMMER 2014

In June, the Ohio Department of Education released results from the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) tests. The test received atten-tion this past year because of a new state law commonly referred to as the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The law requires third-grade students to be retained if they do not score 392 or better on the reading portion of the test. The change went into effect for the 2013-2014 school year. Last spring, 1,547 Olentangy third-grade students took the test. The Ohio Department of Education assessed a passing rate of more than 98 percent. Olentangy had the largest population of third-grade students with the highest passage rate in the state of Ohio.

Intervention for students scor-ing below the passing score is being provided this summer.

District officials are proud of the results. They point to intervention ef-forts Olentangy has used long before the Ohio Department of Education established its Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

“It’s a reflection of the work our staff does to identify students who need individual intervention and deliver instruction to meet their needs,” said Olentangy Local Schools Curriculum Director Jack Fette.

“The ultimate goal is a 100 per-cent passing rate,” added Olentangy Local Schools Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D.

“I am extremely proud of the ef-forts of all our students and staff.”

Safety First » Flashing roadway lights leading to and from Shanahan Middle School were installed recently thanks to a collaboration between Orange and Berlin townships. The lights are part of $1.1 million in capital improvements the district completed over the summer.

Welcome To The Board » District Treasurer Brian Kern administers the oath of office to Roger Bartz following Bartz’ appointment to the Olentangy Board of Education July 9. Bartz was among 41 applicants for the board seat previously occupied by Stacy Dunbar. He will now serve the remainder of Dunbar’s term, which expires on December 31, 2015. Bartz is a 15-year resident of the district and the former president of the Olentangy Orange Athletic Boosters.

A Generous Spirit » Orange High School Principal Todd Meyers, far

right, and assistant principal Karen Sedoti, center, present resident Bill

McCorkle with a bouquet of flowers and a framed drawing of the high

school at the May 22 Olentangy Board of Education meeting. The gifts were in recognition of a $10,000 donation made by McCorkle’s mother, Mae, to

Orange High School’s intervention study center. The school applied for an NBC4i Make a DIfference Grant to fund

technology for reading instruction — laptops and notebooks — for the

intervention center. After learning the school would not receive the grant,

Mae McCorkle stepped forward to make the donation.
