From the desk of the Education Chairman: Great response Guys, to the LSA Class Interest Survey at last months meeting. Also, remember if you did not attend the meeting and want to express your interest or have suggestions for up coming LSA Education / Classes you can download the form from the LSA web site and email it to:

[email protected] .Here is a list of some classes most voted for.

**Master Keying, Advanced **Safe Opening & Service **Door Closers ***Exit Hardware

We will continue to keep updating the list as the responses come in for future classes. Guys, I think this is a great start in continuing our education; think about it like a WIN-WIN relationship: you win because you have invested in you business and profits usually follow. The customer wins because they have the confidence in a qualified professional. As a result you become referable.

Also, don’t forget January 12th, 2008 Greg Perry, ALOA ACE Instructor will be coming in to teach Basic Electricity. May 10th, 2008 our own William Lynk, ALOA ACE Instructor will be teaching Large Format I-Core.

We are looking for a class chairman to head up the February and March classes. For your efforts in planning, your class is paid for by LSA. Contact Marc Dearing if you are interested. Thanks!

Marc A. Dearing, CRL— Education Director

If you weren’t there you missed out on a lively October meeting.

Associate member John Bockart opened the meeting with an interesting question; why sell Schlage, LSDA, Marks, or some other brand, when you can sell your own brand? John carries generically packaged hardware that he la-bels with your company’s name. Contact him at: Bockart & Associates; 800-321-7550.

Theo Schultz engaged the membership with a discussion and demonstration of servicing methods for the new Kwikset SmartKey lock cylinders. Sal (not Sol) Dulcamaro, CML brought a mounted Master NightWatch deadbolt to play with and, yours truly demonstrated how NOT to remove an I.C. cylinder from its housing [Editor’s Note: “aw come on, you were innovative….”].

The latest LSA Class Subject Interest survey debuted. Produced by our new Education Chairman Mark Dearing, CRL, this survey is intended to help the LSA continue to bring you, the membership, relevant classes, speakers, and workshops. It’s included with your newsletter. Please fill it out and return it to Mark. If you have additional areas of interest be sure to note that on the survey form too.

Did you know that the LSA is thirty years old? (I guess that explains all the gray beards and reflective craniums at the meetings). The board is discussing plans to celebrate this remarkable milestone and committees are now forming.

There will be a special holiday meeting come December. Besides a full on spread of savory victuals we’ll be auctioning off a set of AutoSmart vehicle lock servicing manuals. This meeting is open to locksmiths interested in joining LSA too. Al Moebus, membership chair, will be there with applications aplenty.

New member, Bryan Guerin, has graciously taken up the reins of Recoding Secretary. I speechified a little about the importance and value of professional trade associations and he bought it. Thanks Bryan!

Don’t miss out again. Be sure to attend November’s meeting. See you there.

Never Lower Your Price To Sell!

A lesson learned from LAB (used without their permission): “Never lower your price to sell”. That just cheapens the value of your product or service. Instead, give it away! The customer has now received a product or service at its full value. A shrewd business person will select when, what, and to whom to give things away. Unlike LAB, who never attaches strings to their give-aways, you might tell the on-the-fence customer that you will give them the fifth deadbolt if you will let them be convinced to cover all the entry points of their home. A couple of one liners include: “Here are six keys. I’m only charging your for four”. Or “I didn’t charge you to rekey the lock to match your existing key.” Or “I noticed the latch wasn’t catching right, so I fixed that too, without charge.”

A Lock???

You may run into a real estate agent type lock box that is not the familiar GE/Supra you are used to seeing. The one in particu-lar I had given to me to work on has a black plastic coated body and a combination to open the key compartment. Unlike the Supra, this lock box had a key to release the shackle. With the help of Ted Schultz who picked the lock for me, and John Hubel’s idea of using depth keys to read the pins, I was able to make a working key. The cuts are 5246 on a M1 blank. The cyl-

inder appears to be a clone of a master pad-lock cylinder. I used Master depths and spaces. The cuts would translate to A0482. I have not confirmed it but I have heard reports that all the lock boxes are keyed alike.

John Bockert of Bockert and Associates was in attendance. John has expanded his operation to include a series of locksets and closers that he will “Private Label” for your shop. This is a distinct advantage where you can offer your customers a brand of lock with YOUR NAME ON IT. Contact John directly at 800-321-7550 for further information. You don’t need to buy large case quantities of product.

Ted Schultz returned to the meeting with additional information regarding the Kwik-set Smart Lock. Ted had additional infor-mation on the bypassing and servicing of this new cylinder and passed around the lock and tools. Ted made up a probe that will move all the lugs to the proper posi-tion at the same time so the “learn tool” can be inserted and the lock reset to a new combo. I had my flat key duplicator with

ROGUE’S ROW— OCT. LSA MEETING—WOW!

President Rob Rovinsky traveled a path few of us have ever trodden. He has unleashed a new technique for removing an SFIC from its housing….in an innovative, but bizarre way. As an SFIC Specialist, I (Bill Lynk) guided him, but his inner strength dic-tated otherwise. In the end, he was triumphant!!! [side note: we were all terrified]

In retrospect, with a small vise on a table, that cannot do justice to the fact that the drill needed to just touch the core inside the IC mortise; with all the jiggling and screaming, that was not possible; so I advised Rob to drill the heck out of the lug; he did and the core was saved for decoding; the housing, still works beautifully...what more can be asked?!?

A Very Intense Board Meeting

God Bless the man behind the coffee machine! He is Mike Smolerek and assures us that coffee & donuts are here each meeting!!! Ryan Smith is enjoying the ambience.

Another intense LSA Board Meeting. What's in the box??

The L-03 Domestic Auto elective will be available at the November meeting—one hour before the meeting (6:30 p.m.), proc-tored by our own Bob Noble, CML, CPS. The cost is $15.00 made out to ALOA, and is for ALOA members who took the Interme-diate Auto Class. The Certificates for class attendees will also be passed out then at the November meeting.

PRP Test Notice!.......Automotive Class

It's nice to see LSA members doing what they are told. The Prez said: “Fill out these forms now!!” And within seconds, everyone stopped what they were doing and acquiesced. Wow...the power of author-ity!

Jason is currently attending Wayne County Community College to earn a degree in business administra-tion to enhance his administrative position at the Center. He also has “side job” doing income tax returns.

When I asked Jason about a memorable story , he returned to teen year of 14 and related a hunting story. On a Thanksgiving morning while hunting on a relative’s farm, he encountered two doe wandering by. He had set aside his gun (a single shot 410) for a “reprieve” and trying regain the shooting posture, the deer moved on. But coming on the scene was a big eight point buck which he dropped with one shot.

Jason and his wife have been married for five years and have 20 month old daughter, Lucy. The couple are leaders in the Youth and Drama programs at their church. The do a unique program for Halloween. Greet

Jason at our meeting and ask to relate program. - by Al Moebus
