Immigra on and Xenophobia by Ed Dignan“I decided to teach the class a er all the news about an -Asian violence. It caused me to re-view other periods of xenophobia in US history and look at the extent to which those mes were

associated with high immigra on. It turns out it’s a mixed history - and extreme xenophobia tends to burn itself out.”

With that impetus from recent events, Naida Tushnet began to develop her Summer OLLI course, Immigra on and Xenophobia. The four-week class will analyze the causes of xenophobic policies and ci zen ac on over the course of US history.

In the last few years, Naida, OLLI’s past president and long me board member, has found me to teach several OLLI popular classes in American history and social policy issues. With an MA in History and a Ph.D. in educa onal policy and administra on, she has had several careers; as a high school teacher, conduc ng research on social policies and programs, and later teaching how to evaluate educa onal programs.

That broad experience plus her personal involvement in social jus ce issues provides a solid background that OLLI students will certainly appreciate in this new, mely class. Naida’s research shows that immigra on’s rela onship with xenophobia has not always been strictly caus-al. Examples include the current an -Asian sen ment, as well as the ac ons by the US government and across US society against German Americans before and during World War I. Her research also fi nds that spikes in xenophobia in this country have always reached end points, frequently due to ci zen ac on that stopped it. Naida’s trove of source material from her work over the years will be updated and sup-ported that with informa on from government data like that provided by the Census Bureau. Immigra on and Xenophobia is sure be an informa ve and very relevant Zoom class that many OLLI members are certain to enjoy.

Recently, in recognizing Teacher Apprecia on Week and Mothers Day, I visited my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Pakiz. I took a bouquet from my gardens, and

a bag of my home-made caramel corn (she does not eat chocolate). We cha ed for an hour and caught up on life and family. About a month ago she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In 2002, she survived cancer. Now at 88 she says she has had a good life and is not going to subject herself to the side eff ects of chemo & radia on. She is comfortable and doing well with a good care giver assis ng her. She is a woman of faith and op mism. 63 years ago her classroom was one of my safe places. When I was 60 years old, she said something life changing and inspiring to me. The perpetual teacher and good Chris an person, she con nues to inspire, care and love sincerely. I look forward to more conversa ons in the me she has le . I have much to learn. My philosophy (even before Covid restric ons) is “Life is good. People are basically good. I like people, and people like me.” The past year has impressed on me the value of having caring people in my life, and in doing good to each other. Each day we make small choices that have a big impact on our life and that of others. Make the caring choice, the li ing choice and live well!

normal classroom a endance with limited restric ons if any; and a somewhat restricted classroom environment with a mixture of zoom classes, hybrid classes and in person, on campus and at other OLLI venues. Regardless of the environment, we plan to have the capability to off er hybrid classes. As a result of our surveys, you have told us you wish to con nue taking classes on zoom if only to avoid having to park on campus and pay parking fees. We will need to purchase and upgrade our video capabili es in room 101 with an addi onal laptop to connect the classroom to Zoom par cipants. We are currently evalua ng proposals to see what we can aff ord. We’ve also met with other OLLI Directors from throughout Southern CA to see how they are enabling hybrid classes. No ma er which alterna ve method predominates, be assured we will do our best to off er interes ng and varied learning experiences. I’d also like to thank those members who took on the role of host and/or co-host for our Zoom classes. We will need you again as long as we are on Zoom. We may also need addi onal hosts in the classroom for hybrid classes. If such a role appeals to you, please contact the offi ce and volunteer.

I’m fi nally op mis c now that we’ve got our vaccine shots and are cleared to see our families. While this past year has been an ordeal no one wishes to repeat, we have

learned that classes given via Zoom can be an eff ec ve teaching method that many of our members actually enjoy. Most importantly, I hope you, your family, and friends are well, both physically and mentally and have the desire to con nue taking OLLI classes. You’ll note our summer class list is a li le thinner than usual. Maybe it’s because of Zoom or just maybe there is a growing ennui with our off erings. So instead of my usual call for volunteers and dona ons, this me I’m asking you to think of yourself becoming one of our instructors. Almost all of our instructors have come from the membership. I myself took classes for a couple of years and then realized I could teach some of the things I learned during my career as an engineer in the defense electronics industry. Perhaps you can put together a class (it doesn’t have to be 8 weeks) that shares your experiences with the rest of us. Please consider teaching for OLLI, as it is very rewarding. And if fre ng about a lack of classes this summer isn’t depressing enough, the fall looks more worrisome because of the uncertainty of how many students will be allowed on campus. As of this wri ng there is s ll no concrete answer to whether or not the campus and therefore OLLI, will be back to normal for the fall session. So, all we can say now is that we are planning for three alterna ves: all classes on Zoom due to con nuing Covid restric ons;

Samsung Smartphone BasicsIf some of the features of your Samsung Galaxy series smartphone are s ll myste-rious, there is a solu on. As the class tle indicates, Sam-sung smartphone instructor Richard Sherwood can show you what all the bu ons on your phone are for, how use the camera and share and edit photos, and take you on a tour of the se ngs. He’ll also cover how to make new contacts, use your phone’s assistant, and get apps from the Play Store, and much more. Bring your Samsung phone and your ques ons about Android OS to the Zoom class /work-shop. A Short Guide to Cable Cu ngDid you know that the average cable bill in the US is $217 per month? Although the savings aren’t as big as they used to be, ge ng rid of cable and streaming what you watch on your TV or other devices can s ll be a bargain. This two-week class will show you how to develop your

cord cu ng strat-egy, what equipment you’ll need, plus it will supply you with a long list of content you can choose from. I’ll teach this class.

Kudos to our StudentsHave you no ced how good at Zoom you and al-most all your fellow stu-dents are now? And do you remember when we started off ering classes online last year how alien

it seemed at fi rst? We appreciate the extra eff ort it’s taken all of you to learn how to get to your classes before the fi rst lecture even started. Congratula ons!Apple Watch At the very least, Apple Watches keep track of our physical ac vity, like coun ng steps, our heartbeats, and how many calories we’re burning as we move through our days. But they can do much more. If you also have an iPhone, you can pair the two devices and get texts, listen to music and podcasts, take phone calls Dick Tracy style, and much more. Some other features are fall detec on, a heart rate monitor, and as a sign of the mes, it does a 20-second countdown when you’re washing your hands. Our Apple Watch instruc-tor, Don Kisner, is back with us this term, so if you have a new Apple Watch or just want to learn more about what this smart-watch can do for you, check the schedule for the class me.

There are lots of things that changed our lives over the past year. John Halligan has kept us all entertained and challenges us to stay well!

EXERCISE ALL YOU WANT - But don’t go ….JUMPING to conclusions;PUSHING your luck;SPINNING your wheels;CLIMBING the wall;DRAGGING your heels;GRASPING for straws;FISHING for compliments;THROWING your weight around; andPASSING the buck.

John found all hair dressers closed and opted for a home job. We heard from OLLI friends that Joyce Seippel is recovering well and she Zoomed into a Harmonica session. She allowed us to take a 'MUG' shot!

(again consistent with the Biennial Survey). A majority of instructors surveyed were on board to explore off ering classes in the hybrid format. Students and instructors agree that masking, social-distanc-ing, and vaccina ons are impor-tant for a return to campus. While guidelines could change drama -cally by fall, we will likely not be back to full occupancy in our classrooms. Therefore, we will need to con nue with some all-Zoom classes. Depending on occupancy rates, some larger classes may require a hybrid format. As we upgrade the audio visual equipment in HSD 101, we hope to aff ord some of the addi onal equipment needed to use both formats simultane-ously. The pandemic is opening up new possibili es for most OLLIs: a solu on to campus parking issues; con nued member par cipa on in classes while trav-eling, babysi ng or recovering from an illness. As an unexpected benefi t, Zoom has brought us members from outside our region to enhance our membership. It’s a whole new world for us to explore together!

From the Executive Director From the Executive Director by Dr. Barbara White

Our Governing Council President, Len Jacobson, has given us a general view of the possibili es for a return to campus in Fall 2021. In two re-

cent surveys our members have shared their desires for that return. In our November 2020 Biennial Survey, 34% of you preferred in-person classes only, 8% pre-ferred Zoom only, and 58% preferred a combina on of the two. Not surprisingly, those who did not take any Zoom classes in 2020 preferred in-person (72%) and some (27%) a combina on. In an cipa on of a return to campus, we again surveyed renewing and non-renewing mem-bers in March 2021. Results were consistent with the previous survey. They indicated that 61% of respondents would consider par cipa ng in hybrid classes (off ered both in-person and on Zoom

simultaneously). Of these, 54% would prefer to be in the classroom, 19% on Zoom, and 20% at either se ng.

Zoom has become so popular that 27% of those surveyed would select only Zoom classes, 17% only in-person classes, 30% hybrid, and 26% either/both

If you have held an interest in play-ing guitar but got busy with other life ac vi es, Beginning Bluegrass

Guitar level 1 is a great way to learn to play. For intermediate players, Bluegrass Guitar 2 will bolster your confi dence through peer learning that emphasizes guitar fundamentals. Stu-dents work together and learn from each other. These two classes may easily lead you to Bluegrass/Old Time Jam where players of all instruments create a great collabora on of fun mu-sic. It is possible to take all three class-es since they are off ered on the same day at consecu ve me slots. It is well known that playing music increases your IQ, and at the same me sharpens your memory. The focus for these classes is about community, de-veloping what’s there through encouragement as you engaged in one primary purpose: the journey and mas-tery of it all. Frank Swatek, who teaches all three classes, grew up in a non-musical household that prized aca-

demics and sports over music lessons or play. As a teen, he a ended con-certs and broad-ened his interest in music. As a young adult, Frank formed friendships with some professional musicians and ac-companied them as they shopped at music stores and thri shops for

essen al parts of instruments. Immersed in an expand-ing world of music he s ll did not play an instrument but thoroughly enjoyed being around it. He was exposed to Bluegrass music in the early 1970s when Long Beach was a mecca for that style. He remembers listening to Long Beach’s very own “Ni y Gri y Dirt Band” one evening at a pizza parlor and from that moment on was hooked. He a ended music

fes vals at Long Beach State College, and the weekly performances by John Har ord at the Japanese Deer Park in Buena Park. Marriage and a career took Frank away from music for many years, but did not diminish his caring spirit as he worked at the Long Beach Recrea on Department running a pro-gram for disabled persons. When he re red, he followed his lifelong dream of learning to play Bluegrass guitar. Three years ago, he taught his fi rst guitar class at OLLI. He learned and struggled along with his students.

OLLI members and instructors Craig Lowe, Brian Bradshaw, Mark Davidson, Jim Worsh-am, and Carol Baker, encouraged him as he prac ced and honed his skills. Frank blossomed into an experi-enced musician. He further immerses his students in Bluegrass by invi ng Larry Kernagis and other accom-plished Bluegrass players to join in jam sessions. Frank was kind enough to invite me (Tom Hood) to observe his Monday a ernoon pick-up class, a study hall of sorts. I immediately saw from his interac ons with students that he has a warm, encouraging way about him. During this class students learned memo-riza on techniques by watching a video of musician Alan Ma hews. Further discussion centered on some diffi cult chord changes. Frank demonstrated a tech-nique called “Cha anooga” for his students to prac ce for playing chords. This class opened my eyes about how music is memorized and how technical it can be. Frank closely affi liates with the California Bluegrass Associa on. He plans to hold backyard Bluegrass jam sessions in the near future and invite professional Bluegrass musicians to par cipate along with his students. His greatest dream is to take Bluegrass to OLLI chapters across the na on. This would enable students and teachers to visit other campuses, fi nd other Bluegrass groups and jam with them.

start exchanging them to add to your collec on, and see your crea on become part of someone’s special collec on. Think of it as an art gallery in a binder. Every card is unique and memo-rable. In one exercise (pre Zoom), Sheryl groups 3-4 “ar sts” to create a card. One starts a de-sign and passing it down so that each person adds an element. No two are alike. You create mini art pieces, then use them totrade, collect or give away. Sheryl graduated from CSULB with an Art ma-jor and a minor in Health Educa on. She also has an MS in School Administra on, and taught for 35 years. Beyond sharing her educa on, the thing she seeks most is to have YOU enjoy judgment-free crea vity. Class size is limited so be sure to sign up early.

Let's Talk Current Events by Rick Adams

Stay informed and have your say on Na onal & Interna onal Current Events & Issues. Instructors choose a

few current event topics each week. They give a brief presenta on for each and then ask for though ul comments and ques ons from the class. Discussion is invited, and is the core of the class. Students are also encouraged to choose a topic of their own and present it to the class for discussion. This class was one of the original OLLI off erings in 1996. The class leaders welcomed the addi on of Barbara Mikalson as a third instructor in 2021. She joins Doug Haigh and Mary Meyer in planning and leading the discussions. With the new team, two of the three instruc-tors will lead each term and alternate leading each week. The third leader acts as a member of the class in a support-ing role, monitoring the chat room and calling on people who wish to comment.

Artists Wanted by Rick Adams

Papercra is taking another crea ve turn. Sheryl Haglund is introducing a new class called ATC (Art-ist Trading Cards), as a follow up to her other pa-

per cra ing classes. You do not need to have taken any of her prior classes to enjoy ATC. These trading cards were started in the mid 1960s by ar sts in Europe. They are miniature pieces of art created on cards 2.5” by 3.5” and must fi t into base-ball card sleeves, or collector pages, so they are less than ¼” thick. Is has become a world-wide trading and col-lec ng phenomenon. The front show cases your art, and the back has your name, date and the medium used. Other than the

size, there are no holds barred. Any medium works. . . paint, colored pencil, pasted mon-tage, pen & ink, rubber stamps and markers. Your art express-es your personality, or

at least how you felt at the me, and it can be as simple or intricate as you want. The extra fun comes when you

Barbara has taught several classes now and explains that, “About one-third of the students are 'commenters'. Many just like to listen in. There are lots of ac ve discussions and it is a good learning experience. We try to keep it construc ve, and strive for balanced discussions where comments are supported with background for their reasoning.” Barbara added, “We would like a more diverse class; a variety of ethnicity and of poli cal stances. By sharing

all opinions there is more learning for everyone.” In 2019, Barbara le teaching a er 18 years. She was a professor at Rio Hondo Community College. She is a lawyer and economist, and is now a ending grad school for a Masters in Mental Health Counseling.

The history of OLLI at CSULB actually goes back to early 1994 when a group of community members met with Dr. Don Lauda, Dean of the College of Health and

Human Services (CHHS). They were looking for a room on campus where they and other seniors could meet occasion-ally to socialize and have dis-cussions about current events, the community, etc. Although there were no available rooms at that me, the dean was in-trigued since all the departments in CHHS had an interest in older adults and lifelong learning. And so the journey began to create a Senior University on CSULB campus.Senior University - Dr. Lauda worked with representa ves of Community Hospital, the chair and other representa ves from the Gerontology program, and the Vice President of Student Services for the next two years to fi nd space, ob-tain funding, hire a director, and obtain Academic Senate approval. Senior University offi cially opened its doors in the HSD building in October 1996 with 118 members regis-tered for 9 classes.Computer Lab - In February 2000, thanks to a generous grant from the Archstone Founda on, a computer lab with 10 “state of the art” work sta ons opened off ering four “Basis Computer Fun-damentals” classes a day, Monday through Friday. Forty students completed the class and by end of second term in 2001, the cur-riculum had expanded to a handful of classes completed by 140 students. We have con nued to up-grade the computer equipment and course off erings to stay abreast of technology changes.Osher Lifelong Learning Ins tute - Our rela onship with the Bernard Osher Founda on began in 2003 when, in re-sponse to a call for applica ons, Senior University, with the assistance of the CHHS Development Director, submi ed a proposal which was funded in 2004. Components of the proposal included partnering with University groups, increasing the number and variety of instructors, intergenera onal ac vi es, increasing class-room space, community outreach, and grant and fundrais-

ing ac vi es. These components con nue to be the main-stay of our strategic plan development. As Senior University con nued to fl ourish and grow, we received two addi- onal Osher grants in

2005 and 2006. In 2006, we received an endow-ment from the Osher Founda on along with a bridge grant to support the program un l the endowment matured to distribu on. We received a distribu on in 2007 but a er the 2008 recession we did not receive another distribu on un l 2013. In light of the fi nancial crisis, the Osher Founda on provided an operat-ing grant to help support the program during this period. In 2012, in recogni on of the con nued excellence of the program and demonstra on of fi nancial sustainabil-ity, we received a second Osher endowment. With the ex-cep on of the 2019-20 fi scal year, we have received annual distribu ons from the combined endowments.10th Anniversary and Name Change - In 2006 we cele-brated our 10th anniversary - A Decade of Learning – and offi cially changed our name from Senior University to Os-her Lifelong Learning Ins tute at California State University (OLLI at CSULB).Growth - In 2008, we added satellite campuses including in downtown Long Beach on Pine Avenue, expanding our cur-ricular off erings, and opening up the OLLI program to new popula ons. In 2013 we began holding classes at the Jew-ish Community Center and in 2017 we added classes at the Long Beach Bridge Center to our program. We con nue to look for new venues for expansion such as American Gold Star Manor and St Isidore Historical Plaza. 20th Anniversary and Beyond - In 2016 we observed our 20th anniversary by honoring our founding volunteers and supporters on Founders Day. In 2020 in the midst of the Co-vid19 pandemic we managed to pivot and keep OLLI classes going using Zoom virtual programming and many willing teachers and other volunteers. We had planned to cel-

ebrate our 25th anniversary in 2021 but those plans had to be put on hold. Now that we see the light at the end of our dark me, we plan to celebrate in 2022. Thank you to the many people who have con nued to support OLLI through

membership, class par cipa on and generous dona ons. Here’s to a bright future for all of us as we con nue to Learn More and Age Less.

Applica ons Now Being Accepted for Docent Volunteers Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Mu-seum at CSULB is accep ng applica ons through May 2021 for docent volunteers. Docents will play a vital role as our stunning, newly remodeled building reopens in 2022 with fi ve new compelling exhibi ons, ongoing tours, classes, workshops, and events. We have opportuni es for docents to fi ll several vi-tal volunteer posi ons: • Concierge volunteers to greet and welcome visitors and provide helpful informa on to assure a hospitable visit. • Touring and engagement leaders to lead and assist with tours that encourage a meaningful experience with exhibi- ons and sculptures for groups of all ages.

• Museum teachers to lead or assist with hand-on art les-sons and workshops in our new educa on lab to enrich the crea ve process. • Outreach teachers to teach art lessons as part of our K12 classroom outreach in the classroom or via the internet to local students.

Our docent volunteers receive ongoing training in contem-porary art history and touring and engagement strategies at our bi-weekly mee ngs. Docents become familiar with the museum’s collec on of contemporary art and sculpture as well as upcoming exhibi ons from guest speakers and staff presenta ons. Diversity, inclusion, an -bias training and team building skills are also essen al aspects of our ongoing learning. Group fi eld trips and visits to other museums and galleries keep our docents abreast of relevant touring meth-ods and contemporary art trends as well. Please contact chris [email protected] to apply and learn about this enriching opportunity. No previous ex-perience is required—just a desire to study and share the wonder of contemporary art with our visitors!

Legacy Gift Planning by Susan Berkman

If you don’t plan, there may not be a gi ! - Susan Berkman, Assistant Vice President for Gi Planning & Major Ini a ves at CSULB

Crea ng an estate plan is important to do, but easy to put off . Without wri en plans, your health care wishes may not

be known or honored. The gi s you want to make to family, friends and chari es may not happen, and the administra on of your estate will land in court and incur signifi cant costs. A good friend of CSULB loved what he learned here and wanted to help future students con nue their learning. But he did not act before the unexpected happened. He passed away suddenly without a will and his estate went to court where it has been for two years. Had he completed his wri en plans, his estate would have been easy to close and distribute without delay. His wishes would have been honored. The CSULB Gi Planning Offi ce knew he was think-ing about his plans. We worked with him to document his wishes in wri ng (even though he didn’t fi nish). This

is called “planned giving” – outlin-ing your wishes for how the campus should use your gi when it comes in the future. We can help you donate non-cash assets such as real estate or re rement plans and life insurance. In other words, we can help you support OLLI and/or other favorite campus programs now, even if the contribu- on comes later. We can also provide

a free Wills Guide and referrals to lo-cal estate planning professionals if needed. The OLLI “25 for 25” Planned Giving Campaign is designed to maximize everyone’s ability to celebrate OLLI and its 25 years of service to seniors (50+). Give us a call to par cipate in the campaign and to formal-ize your plan this year. You can reach CSULB Gi Plan-ning at (562) 985-5489, by email at Gi [email protected] or through “Contact Us” on our web site, www.csulbgi planning.org.

Estate Planning 101 by Rick Adams

Planning that supports major life events, such as re- rement or crea ng your estate plan requires more

than just selec ng fi nancial and investment tools. Susan Berkman guides you in determining who in your life should benefi t from an inheritance, when they should get it, what they should get and how or in what form they should receive it, or why they should get it. These considera ons infl uence how you set up your re rement and, eventually, your estate plan. Think about your values and the impact your inheritance can have on others, and how you want to be remembered -- the “who, what, when, why and how” ques ons. Estate Planning 101 helps you determine the

answers for yourself. It also reviews com-mon estate planning tools that protect your current estate plan and your vision of what you want it to accomplish. The class focuses on making deci-sions that create an eff ec ve estate plan. Estate planning a orneys collect informa-

on on a fi ll-in-the-blanks worksheet. They ask who should get what from the estate and who should be the trustee

or executor. People o en name their eldest child or someone their own age, without regard for how these choices can in-advertently impact your estate plan. If family confl ict erupts, it is too late and the plan un-winds or spends years in court. Making though ul decisions helps you feel more confi dent about actually ge ng this chore done. We procras nate because we don’t want to think about not being alive. We also procras nate because we are unsure about some of these decisions. That’s the benefi t of the class. It ghtens up the nuts and bolts of estate planning (what documents you need), by addressing the why and how. Susan Berkman is an a orney who specializes in wills and trusts. She has worked in nonprofi ts, in programs, as a manager and fundraiser. She is currently the Assistant Vice President for Gi Planning at CSULB.

OLLI Farewell

Heard at OLLI by Rebecca Low

In Honor of....Candace Yamagawa

We lost an amazing lady, friend, angel, OLLI Volunteer and Rotarian. Candace touched so many lives and brightened so many days. She worked relessly for the wellbeing of others in the community. She fought valiantly against cancer and despair. She con nues to inspire us and warm our hearts. A wonderful look at Candace and her community connec ons can be found in a "remembrance video" on Youtube h ps://youtu.be/qxm5ZmFpTQs

The Advanced Direc ves Workshop is per nent for everyone and I highly recommend it. It is important to provide wri en instruc ons for our caregivers, that will help them make decisions regarding our medi-cal care when we are no longer able to do so. It is never too early to prepare the required documents.

A class taught by Constance Malaambo.

Dear all the Staff of OLLI:I wish to thank all of you for helping the membership of OLLI to par cipate in the event that NCJW gave to honor my family and me. I cannot thank you enough for open-ing up the Zoom to anyone at OLLI who wanted to take part in that incredible event. It has been a joy for me to be part of the Senior University and then OLLI for the past 26 years. It has brought energy, educa on, friend-ship and pleasure to me and everyone surrounding me. Thank you for what YOU ALL have contributed to make my life far richer than I could have ever have expected. Thank you again! With my utmost respect and love for all of you,Sylvia Manheim

Erwin Anisman 1931 - 2021

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Erwin Anisman, born on February 12, 1931 in Los Angeles, CA. He passed away on April 29, 2021, at the age of 90, leaving to mourn his wife Ruth, family and friends. Erwin will be remembered for his quiet demeanor and constant smile. He o en was the last to enroll in classes at OLLI

(especially history and poetry), but ever a kind and gracious presence. A though ulness and intelligence in every word and expression.

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the recent Special Event at MOLAA. It was a wel-come change from the doldrums of daily life now. I also especially enjoyed the travel lady, Marla Jo Fisher..her posi ve a tude was inspi-ra onal..so thanks again. - Suzanne Gilon

I need to fi gure out where downloads go on my tablet! Every day in com-puter land is a challenge, it seems....just when you think you've fi gured it out, something diff erent pops up!!! I wanted to show you the card I made with the background I made in your

class. I trimmed it down to a 5.5 x 5.5 card and added a few rhinestones.

I like the way it turned out. Thank you for doing this class.

I really enjoy it.....Miryam FernandezTaught by Lisa Malmsten

OLLI FarewellsRemembering Chris an Soe… by Marc Davidson – will be foremost in not only the poli cal science students and faculty of CSULB, but as well with the instructors and members of OLLI. Chris an Soe passed this past March 12, 2021, a er a long ba le with Par-kinson’s disease, and as Louise, his wife of 50 years, refl ected: “…he had a great ca-

reer, was a gi ed teacher, and got to work at what he loved.” For myself, my OLLI co-host Jim Worsham, as well as our fel-low harmonica class, we had the deepest respect for Chris an, and loved seeing his pleasure and commitment to learning to play the harmonica. Louise told me, “he was very determined to fi ght the progres-sion of Parkinson's. He exercised a lot, and decided that learning to play the harmoni-ca was something that would help his brain fi ght off the progression of PD. He loved the class and its social connec ons.” This was evident to us all – the harpsters will miss him dearly.

Chris an was a member of the CSULB De-partment of Poli cal Science since 1967, becoming a full professor in 1978, and re r-ing as a professor emeritus in 2001. A na ve of Denmark, his family moved to Bri sh Columbia where he completed high school and his undergraduate degree. He com-pleted his Ph.D studies in Berlin. The department of Poli cal Science provided an amazing review of Chris an’s academic contribu on and mentorship over his tenure at CSULB; compara ve poli cs in American poli cs and Poli cal Theory. Chris an was recognized as stated in their overview, “…a gi ed and beloved teacher…”. Chris an was involved in mul ple professional organiza ons, including Ameri-can poli cal science associa ons, as well as the German Studies Associa on. He was co-editor and chapter author of fi ve highly regarded edited books on German poli cs, and an editor of Compara ve Poli cs (1993-2007). Through his scholarship in Ger-many’s Free Democra c Party, Chris an traveled o en, lecturing, observing elec ons, and par cipa ng in numerous research seminars. Most signifi cant was the invita on to par cipate in observing the fi rst elec ons in East Germany upon the demise of the Berlin Wall and integra on of Germany. Although Chris an re red in 2001 (a er being diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1999), he con nued to teach in the hal ime FERP program un l 2006. He spent Spring Semester, 2005, teaching in the University's London study abroad program. I would encourage all to fi nd me to learn more about Chris an’s life and contribu on to the poli cal science department, years of advocacy and contribu on to building an exem-plary graduate program at CSULB. Upon learning of Chris an’s passing, a group of his harmonica colleagues gathered in Marina Vista Park, and played “Amazing Grace”, one of his favorite songs. Appropriate as well is a prayer in Judaism that is said when someone special passes: “may his memory ever be for blessing to all who loved him”.

Memories of Dr. Heather Jo Holt by Garland HoltIt is with sadness that I tell of my wife of 33 years passing on Feb 11, 2021. Heather suff ered from memory problems dur-ing the last few years of her life, but the Lord called her home before these prob-lems become a major issue for her. Due to the pandemic, I was unable to visit her o en, but I did join her on a medi-cal appointment the Sunday before and we le each other expressing our love. Her passing was peaceful although unexpected; despite pan-demic restric ons the care provided was nothing short of miraculous Heather earned a BA degree at San Francisco State and taught so-cial studies in the Oakland schools. She earned a PhD in Economics from Texas A&M University, one of the fi rst women with that honor. In the summer of 1965, she met Garland, the love of her life, while they both were working at Yellowstone Park. A life full of travels and love followed. Heather will be missed by her fam-ily and friends. Garland has been a member and instructor at OLLI for the last 15 years.

Estate Planning Planning to support major life events, like retirement or creating your estate plan, is more than just choosing fi nan-cial and investment tools. Before answering the question of which tool to use, we need to determine who should get an inheritance, when they should get it, what they should get and how or in what form they should receive it and why they should get it. All of these considerations infl uence how we set up our own retirement and, eventually, our estate plans. We must examine our values and the impact our inheritance might have and how we want to be remembered -- the “who, what, when, why and how” questions. This class will examine the questions and provide tools to determine these answers for yourself. We'll review common estate planning tools that can protect your current estate plan and your vision of what you want it to accomplish in the future. SPECIAL EVENTS - FREEBy Land and SeaThis summer Delrie Hobbs is off ering two FREE lectures-one in July and one in August. Zheng He and Ibn Fadlan are not well known in the West, but their explora ons are fascina ng as described below:(1) Zheng He and the “Treasure Fleet”Some eighty years before Christopher Colum-bus, the Chinese Admiral Zheng He led the Ming Dynasty emperor’s “treasure fl eet” on seven

diff erent voyages between 1405 and 1433. These voy-ages traveled the South China Sea, Indian Ocean, Ara-bian Sea, Red Sea and the Coast of Africa. It is rumored that this fl eet may have even reached North America. Three hundred ships (some 400’ long), 28,000 sailors…it was the largest armada the world

had ever seen un l WW1. What was the purpose of these voyages?Tuesday, July 20th 2:00 -3.30 PM

(2) Arabs and VikingsIbn Fadlan, a 10th century Arab, was sent by the Abbasid Caliph on a diploma c mission to the Volga Bulgars (Vikings or the Rus). He chronicles and de-scribes his journey from Baghdad to the Volga region in great detail, including the manners and customs of the Rus. He provides us an interes ng and surprising look at the Vikings who se led and traded in this region.Tuesday, August 17th 2:00 - 3.30 PM

Organ Dona on: What You Need to Know presented by Roberta Hamfeldt, OLLI member * Thursday, July 22 2:00 - 3:00 PM

Have you ever wondered how you can give back to this world a er you’re gone—without having to spend your money? Have I got the solu on for you! Instead of dona ng that old car or spending your child’s inheritance, you can give back by simply becoming an organ donor. “I’m too old!” you say? Hogwash! The oldest organ donor in the US was a 95 year old man who donated his liver to a 60 year old woman. Come join us to discuss common myths and fascina ng facts related to organ, eye and ssue dona on. We’ll talk about why it’s such an important issue for us to consider even (especially) at our age and take me during our discussion for any ques ons you might have.*I’ve been a OneLegacy/Donate Life Volunteer Ambassador for four years and enjoy spreading the message of organ, eye, and ssue dona on. “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud”
