With volatile stock markets and falling oil prices, the market rallies have presented us with a few good buying and selling opportunities. We sold our holdings in Anheuser- Busch InBev SA/NV (BUD) and reinvested those gains into Avis Budget Group INc. (CAR) and Micron Technology (MU). Generally cheaper oil prices presented an attractive situation for the consumer as, in the US, household energy costs, as a portion of disposable income, have been reduced creating increased savings or boosting consumer spending into the financial system. For the oil companies it means further cost consolidations in order to meet year end returns. Despite this we believe that continuing to hold our positions in Schlumberger Limited (SLB) through this unpredictable time will place us at a strategic advantage to capitalize on future gains when oil prices find their new medium. The growth or inflation of the major economies will continue to fluctuate on a monthly basis and it will be interesting to see the outcome of Russian economic sanctions on the world. Asset markets look fully valued across the board, it is hoped (and expected) that the recent increase in volatility will continue and open up investment opportunities. Debt and leverage levels have exceeded credit levels of 2007 so that any sell offs are likely to be more erratic and perhaps more exaggerated than we have seen during the last 3 years. Overall the markets ended the year at all-time highs and the Marathon Freedom Fund SP, a global, multi-asset class Fund is primed to benefit from those companies providing consistent growth and attractive dividends in US dollar terms. The Fund has acquired private equity in the UK. The equity is in Arch Financial, a Chartered Wealth Management firm with Assets Under Management of GBP 150M. The acquisition was at a deep discount to the valuation which is reflected in the Fund price. Property has been sold in a financial centre of the Caribbean and the proceeds are being used to buy discounted property in the UK. Portfolio ReviewDecember was a testing month for the Fund. With volatile stock markets and falling oil prices, the market rallies have presented us with a few good buying and selling opportunities. We sold our holdings in Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (BUD) and reinvested those gains into Avis Budget Group INc.
