Pipe Inspection with Guided WavesOering the capacity to screen in-service pipes and pipeline over long distances, guided wave inspection is used to localizeareas o concern on above-ground conventional structures and or advanced applications such as buried, insulated, coated, and vertical pipes. This technology also detects corrosion at supports, clamps, and pipe racks.

Guided wave technology can perorm inspections on pipes with limited access. It pinpoints locations that require urtherinspection, avoiding unnecessary excavation, coating removal, or scaolding, i no aw is detected. The use o this technologyhelps provide a signicant reduction in operating costs and is considered an inspection solution or unpiggable pipes.

Guided Wave TechnologyGuided wave technology is a nondestructive testing method used to locate potential degradation, such as internal or externalcorrosion and metal loss. While conventional UT provides localized inspection, underneath or in the vicinity o the sensor loca-tion, guided waves are able to screen the entire pipe wall, over tens o meters, rom a single inspection position. Then, prove-up inspection only needs to be conducted at the specic indication position. Combined with other NDT techniques, a guided

wave system will help to maximize the eciency o a corrosion management program, without compromising data quality.

Advantages o Guided Waves High productivity inspection with long-range coverage and rapid

    screening.

Ability to scan pipes with limited access, such as buried, coated, insulated and through wall pipes, leading to cost reduc-tion or excavation and insulation removal.

100% screening coverage o pipe wall.

Cost eective solution or pipe integrity management programs.

    In-service inspection (no production shutdown).

The UltraWave LRT system excites low-requency ultrasonic waves that propagate in the axial direction o the pipe, rom bothsides o the probe collar. Various actors inuence the maximum inspection distance: the pipe conguration and environment, the type o uid inside the structure, and the type o coating. The propagated torsional waves detect general variations in thetotal cross-sectional area o pipe, as well as changes in the material properties.

    Code Compliant

Guided wave technology is now widely accepted as an inspection technique and is covered by ASTM international standards. The UltraWave LRT system is designed according to the industry standards and will contribute to a code-compliant inspectionprocedure.

    UltraWave LRT System

The Olympus UltraWave LRT system is a turnkey solution with all the tools and accessories required to perorm ecient inspec-tions in the eld :

Data acquisition unit with a broad requency range, rom 15 kHzto 85 kHz, and an inspection length that extends up to 182 m(600 eet) bidirectionally.

Standard probe collar kits, covering pipe diameters rom 2 in. to24 in. OD.

Probe collars or other diameters available upon request.

    Rugged industrial touch-screen laptop computer.

Latest version o UltraWave LRT sotware with advanced ea-tures such as F-scan, Active Focusing and Synthetic Focusing(C-scan).

    Acquisition Unit

The UltraWave LRT system includes a 16-pulser acquisition unit with arequency spectrum o 15 to 85 kHz, adjustable in 1 kHz steps or highresolution. Lower resolutions are available in the sotware to reduceacquisition time and data le size. Portable and battery operated, the unitis supplied with a backpack or easy on-site transportation. The systemoers optimized power management with two hot-swappable batteries tomaximize on-site eciency.

    Hardware

    Probe Collar

The probe modules are sealed in a molded housing orincreased durability in rough environments. Their lightweightand low-prole design ensures consistent contact and stabil-ity on the pipe surace during data acquisition.

    Compact and low-prole probe module.

Completely sealed probe module or high reliability.

Highly resistant stainless steel wear plates.

The Olympus UltraWave LRT system has several designeatures that make setup straightorward and secure. All thenecessary inormation or probe module installation is clearlydisplayed on the collar.

Probe collars available or pipes as small as 2 in. OD.

Total collar height o about 30 mm oering extremely low clear-

ance. Highly exible and portable bands or limited-access locations.

Color-coded cables and bands or easy wiring.

    Analysis

    F-Scan Color Map

Guided wave technology is a requency-dependent detection method. The UltraWave LRT sotware is equipped with a uniqueF-scan color map that displays the entire requency range acquired over the inspected pipe length. With this color map, selecting the optimum requency or urther analysis is ast and intuitive. A shadowed zone on the F-scan represents the lowarea o the power curve.

    Setup

Dening the scope o work or an inspection jobis a critical part o the planning process or aguided wave examination. The UltraWave LRTuser-riendly sotware provides a step-by-stepwizard or entering the inspection parameters.

Clear identication o each inspected line and itslocation, as well as the pipe size, material, con-guration, and more.

Illustrations, detailing the positioning and orienta-tion o the probe collar.

Intuitive tree control or database management.

    UltraWave LRT Sotware

    A-Scan Analysis

Once a requency is selected, the correspond-ing A-scan is displayed and used or detailed

analysis. The A-scan analysis eatures distance-amplitude correction (DAC) curves, reectorannotations, and an option or additional notes.

Two independent sets o DAC curves can be ad-justed or the orward and the reverse direction.

When an indication is tagged on the analysisgraph, the sotware updates the pipe schematicwith a pre-selected symbol. Then this inorma-tion, including the users notes, is compiled in anindication table, which is saved or the report.
