  • Cleaning & maintenance

  • Dust and dirt particles can sometimes

be seen during observation and may

affect image quality. This is particularly

frustrating if dust particles are visible

    when photographing important

    specimens that cannot be photographed

again. Therefore, to ensure you get the

    most from your microscope, cleaning

should be made a regular part of the

    maintenance routine. The following

notes lead you through the basic

procedures from knowing how to clean

the external frame to cleaning the

    optical system and specimens.

    Cleaning the microscope frame

Stains on a microscope frameshould be first wiped with a piece ofcloth wetted with a small amount ofneutral detergent and then wipedclean with a piece of cloth that hasbeen immersed in luke-warm water.Make sure not to touch the lens andavoid using organic solvents thatmay damage plastic parts.

For dust contamination that adheresto painted components and is difficultto remove, wipe with a piece of clothor soft tissue paper that has beensoaked in a mixture of 7 parts etherto 3 parts alcohol. Keep the mixtureaway from plastic parts of themicroscope to prevent damage.

How to clean the optical system

Keeping the optical system clean atall times is essential for image quality. If dust spots on optical glassessuch as lenses, prisms and filtersare left unattended, the dirt can bebecome difficult to remove and maymould. By always keeping the opticalsurface clean, you avoid many of themaintenance problems and shouldprolong the life of your microscope.Note, however, cleaning of the lenssurfaces only applies to exposedareas of objectives, eyepieces, filters and condensers. If internal ormajor cleaning becomes necessary, please contact your Olympusmicroscope dealer.

    Method

To prevent scratches on coatingsand optical glass, remove dirt anddust that sticks to their surface withan air gun or blower brush.

Wrap the lens tissue around a bamboo stick as illustrated.

Clean the lens by putting a smallamount of lens cleaning fluid orcleaning mixture (7 parts ether and3 parts alcohol) on the tip of a lenstissue. Discard each lens tissueafter a single use.

When cleaning a large lens surface, wipe from the centre towards theperiphery in a circular motion.

  • When cleaning large glass surfaceson both sides of an accessory suchas a filter, fold two or three layers oflens tissue soaked in the cleaningmixture, hold the accessory at itsedges and wipe from the centretowards the periphery as you slowlyrotate it.

When cleaning the surfaces of thecondenser and the light exit glass, hold a piece of lens tissue betweenyour middle and index fingers, fold it and wrap it around your indexfinger. Hold the tissue down withyour thumb while wiping the lenssurfaces clean.

After cleaning, examine the lenssurface with a magnifying glass. If colour reflected from the lens surface looks uneven, it is an indica-tion that there is still dust specksand dirt on the lens. By viewingthrough the bottom of an eyepiece, you can use it as a magnifying glass.

When cleaning a large lens withlens tissue wrapped around yourfinger, you should wipe from thecentre towards the periphery in acircular motion. Always use a cleanpart of the lens tissue as you rotateyour index finger.

    How to clean specimen slides:

Make it a habit to clean eachspecimen both before and afterobservation. For cleaning thespecimen, a soft cloth, gauze orpiece of lens tissue may be usedwithout cleaning liquid. However, ifthe contamination is difficult toclean, breathe on the specimenbefore wiping it.

    Points to note:

    1. Removal of oil as well as routinecleaning can be done more easily if the specimen is removed from the stage.

    2. When using cleaning mixture, use a moisturised cloth or cleaningtissue. Be certain not to applyexcessive fluid as it may seepunderneath the cover glass anddamage the specimen.

    Cleaning specimens with coverglasses:

Just as when cleaning lenses, wipeoff the oil and dirt with a piece oflens tissue lightly moistened withcleaning mixture. As the oil cannotbe completely removed with onewipe, repeat wiping until the oil filmis removed.

    Cleaning specimens withoutcover glasses:

Oil adhering to uncovered specimenscannot be wiped off. You can, however, remove the oil byimmersing the specimen for 5 to 10minutes in a xylene bath. Containers areavailable for both horizontal andvertical immersion depending onyour particular need.
