General Information for StudentsThank you for your interest in our Cerrtificate IV and Diploma of Aromatherapy courses. These courses are accredited by the Commonwealth Government RTO Number 88133, so you can be assured that it is of a high educational standard. This course will be run at the College premises in Canberra.

Established in 1988, Om Shanti College has been a leader in the natural therapies industry for more than 20 years. Since re-opening in 2003 after the premises were gutted by fire, the college has been renovated and rejuvenated, building on Om Shanti’s already solid reputation.

Om Shanti College provides professional development in Wellbeing Training. We offer Nationally Recognised Qualifications in Massage, Aromatherapy, Community Services and Health Administration and Business.

The College’s facilities offer state-of-the art equipment, large training rooms and a relaxed, soothing environment in which to learn. Om Shanti provides specialist yoga and massage materials, including yoga mats, massage tables, essential oils, wheat bags and massage blends.

The Study of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, as we know it today, involves the use of pure and natural essential oils and hydrosols to bring about healing, harmony and balance of the mind, body and spirit. It is a powerful therapy with many facets, and many possible applications.

A professional Aromatherapist is usually also trained in one of the massage modalities, such as remedial massage or Swedish massage. However, aromatherapy can be combined very effectively with many other modalities, such as Reiki, counselling, psychology, nursing, medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, reflexology, subtle energy healing, and beauty therapy, to name but a few.

Aromatherapy is ideally suited to providing a true holistic treatment, i.e. one which addresses the whole person, on all levels. Some aromatherapists choose to work mainly at the physical or clinical level - such as on muscular pain, wounds, skin conditions, etc. This is a wonderful part of aromatherapy and should not be undervalued. However, the benefits of aromatherapy for mental and emotional states, as well as subtle energy work like balancing the chakras and clearing negativity, give this therapy its broad appeal.

Why Choose to Study Aromatherapy at Om Shanti College?

The Diploma of Aromatherapy Course at Om Shanti College covers all the aspects of aromatherapy so that the student may experience the range of possibilities that aromatherapy provides.

Because the scope of this course encompasses both the scientific (clinical) and the intuitive aspects of aromatherapy, the students may experience the broad range of aromatherapy knowledge and wisdom, so that they may follow whichever aspects of aromatherapy appeal to them after graduation.

When deciding where to study aromatherapy it is important to discover the scope of the courses on offer. Many large institutions may not offer much exposure to the more intuitive aspects of aromatherapy.

Class sizes may also differ greatly from one college or institution to another. Many of the larger institutions have much bigger class sizes than at Om Shanti College. We keep the class sizes small (maximum class size is 14 students) to facilitate student learning. Many larger institutions may have class sizes up to around 30 students for theory and 20 for practical work. This means that each student has less opportunity to ask questions or obtain the guidance they may need. With small class sizes the students have much greater access to the teachers, which is particularly important when learning massage techniques, etc.

Om Shanti College also provides a well-stocked student library, with an extensive selection of books on aromatherapy and related topics, plus journals, and video and audio tapes. Selected titles can also be ordered by students for purchase, at 10% off the retail price.

Some of the modules included in the Diploma of Aromatherapy at Om Shanti College are actually post-graduate studies (e.g. the modules on the Subtle Aromatherapy Technique and the Introduction to Australian Bush Flower Essences). Other modules, such as the Fundamentals of Nutrition, might not be taught in other courses.

Teaching Staff

All teachers are well qualified in the fields they will be teaching, and have a commitment to wellbeing therapies and teaching.

Length and Structure of Course

The Diploma of Aromatherapy course covers all topics required to become a professional Aromatherapist. The part-time structure of the course allows students to maintain day jobs and other life activities (family commitments etc.) so as not to disrupt a student’s current career or lifestyle too much. Though of course this is a tertiary-level course and student commitment to class time and study time is required.

The aromatherapy modules are run in 2-day blocks (on weekends); generally once or twice per month and the other foundation modules are run days, evenings or weekends. There are no classes during ACT school holidays but we may hold evening classes on public holidays if we have to. The class times for weekends are 10 am to 5:30 pm, evening classes usually 6.30pm-9.30pm and varied times for day classes.

Entry Requirements

Students must have successfully completed Year 10 of an Australian school system or equivalent, plus two years of work or study, unless they are a mature age applicant or special consideration is granted by the principal.

Mature age applicants who demonstrate an interest in aromatherapy and a willingness to apply themselves to study are also welcome to apply.

Massage Tables, Equipment and Supplies

Students will be expected to purchase their own massage tables and towels, etc., at the latest, by the time they are to perform the case studies at home and the Supervised Student Clinic at the College. Most materials required during the course will be supplied to the student at the appropriate time. The cost of these materials is not included in the course fees.

Course Notes

A large folder will be provided to each student for each certificate course. Course notes will be provided to each student at the end of each day of lectures and presentations. These will build up into a set of reference manuals that, along with the text books provided, will form the basis of the reference material needed for students to use in their practice when they graduate. The cost of these course notes is included in the course cost.
