chicken fried rice , leaving space under each one to write six main ingredients. Ask the students which countries thesedishes come from (e.g., Italy , France , Spain , and China/
Asia). Tell the students you like to cook these dishes. Askthem which six main ingredients they think you use and writecorrect guesses under the name of the dish. If the studentscannot say all the ingredients you use (which is likely), teachany missing ingredients one by one and then have them tellyou which dish they think you use them in. Continue until thelists are complete.

● Tell the students that they are going to cook one ofthese dishes for dinner tonight, but they do not haveall the ingredients that they need.
● Hand out the cards, one recipe list each, and enoughinstructions for every four students. Direct thestudents’ attention to the What you havesection onthe recipe. Ask them if they need all the ingredientsthat they have. Have them check the ones they needto make that recipe. Now direct their attention tothe What you needsection. Tell them they need toget the other ingredients from other students in theclass by exchanging ingredients. Direct them to theinstructions. Choose a student and act out the modelconversation. Make it clear that they can only swapone ingredient with each student.
● Have the students circulate to do the activity, sittingdown as they complete it. Monitor to check that theyare following the rules and note down any mistakes
for error correction later. If, at the end, there are anystudents who cannot complete the activity, have themask you for what they need and tell them you willsupply it, so that they can sit down, too.

Put the students into small groups and have themdiscuss the questions. Elicit answers from the groups,writing any interesting ideas on the board.

Have the students use the Internet to choose a dishthey want to try, make a list of the five or more mainingredients, and bring this list to the next class. Tellthem to check any new vocabulary with a dictionary(e.g., www.macmillandictionary.com) so that they canexplain it to their group.
