So, what is the problem, now?

Recent News headlines highlight the problems– 2007 tied in place for Earth's second warmest year 2010 may become warmest on record.

– 11 hottest years occurred in the last 13 years– Cold snap kills 760 in Afghanistan– Summer of 2010 - 700 die everyday in Moscow from

record heat.– Hottest year on record for Shanghai, China in 2007– Arctic ice-cap meltdown is twice the size of France– Climate change may wipe out some Indonesian islands

off the map– Uganda's lucrative coffee threatened by climate

change– Drought driving deadly snakes into Australian cities– U.N confirms greenhouse gases hit high in 2006

No Plastics, please! Thank you

Do not use a plastic bottle to drink water– Use steel/glass/ceramic containers– Drink tap water– Do not re-use plastic disposable containers

Do not use plastic disposable plates and cups– Use steel/ceramic washable plates and cups– Use bio-degradable plates and spoons if possible

Use a cloth bag for groceries Minimize plastic trash bags at home

– Use bio-degradable plastics instead Dispose plastics properly

– Do not throw plastics into rivers/sewers/lakes– Do not inhale fumes from plastics

Say No To Plastics

By Jag B MahadeoBy Jag B Mahadeo –– theheartofthesun.comtheheartofthesun.com

Impact of plastics usage

We use plastics extensively, for example– Bottled drinking water/soda– Bags for groceries and many more…

Disposal of plastics is not easy– Majority of plastics are not bio-degradable– Dumping into rivers and lakes affects fishes and

other aquatic life Extensive plastic usage causes Emphysema & Lung

cancer

4 R’s– Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repair

Recycle paper, newspapers and milkcontainers

Recycle batteries, electrical appliances andcomputer parts– Don’t throw these items into the trash –

recycle them Recycle printer ink cartridges

– Many companies have free cartridgerecycle programs – make use of them

Use bio-degradable products for producingcompost– Acts as manure for the soil– Environmentally friendly

By Jag B MahadeoBy Jag B Mahadeo –– theheartofthesun.comtheheartofthesun.com

Did you know?Facts:

Recycling a four-foot stack of newspapers saves theequivalent of one 40-foot fir tree

Every glass bottle recycled saves enough energy to light a100-watt light bulb for 4 hours

Making cans from recycled aluminum saves 95% of theenergy required to produce cans from raw material

Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild theentire commercial airline fleet every three months.

Plastics; It’s Effect on the environmentPlastics; It’s Effect on the environment Disintegration

– Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly; the molecular bonds that makeplastic so durable make it equally resistant to natural processes of degradation.Since the 1950s, one billion tons of plastic have been discarded and may persistfor hundreds or even thousands of years

Production– In some cases, burning plastic can release toxic fumes. Burning the plastic

polyvinyl chloride (PVC) may create dioxin. Also, the manufacturing of plasticsoften creates large quantities of chemical pollutants.

Recycling– Unfortunately, recycling of plastics has proven to be a difficult process. The biggest

problem is that it is difficult to automate the sorting of plastic wastes, making it laborintensive.

Landfills– Plastics are a fast growing part of the municipal solid waste in the United States.

The APC reports that in 1960 plastic contributed less than one percent of themunicipal waste. By 2007 almost 31 million tons of plastic became municipal waste, representing about 12 percent of the waste in landfills.

– Much of the plastic in landfills is un-recycled plastic bottles and bags. About38 billion water bottles end up in landfills each year along with billions ofplastic bags. It is estimated that it will take up to 1000 years for a plastic bottle orbag to decompose after it is buried in a landfill.

Plastics; It’s Effect to our HealthPlastics; It’s Effect to our Health Overall Health Effects

Plastics often contain a variety of toxic additives. Plasticizers are often added tobrittle plastics like PVC to make them pliable enough for use in food packaging, toysand , tubing, shower curtains and other items. Traces of these chemicals canleach out of the plastic when it comes into contact with food. The EuropeanUnion has banned the use of DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate), the most widely usedplasticizer in PVC.

Cancer Some compounds leaching from polystyrene food containers have been found

to interfere with hormone functions and are suspected human carcinogens. The monomers used in its manufacture may be toxic; and small amounts of thosechemical may remain trapped in the product. The WHO’s International Agency forResearch on Cancer (IARC) has recognized the chemical used to make PVC,vinyl chloride, as a known human carcinogen. Some polymers may alsodecompose into the monomers or other toxic substances when heated. The FDA isspending $30 million to investigate suspicious indications of BPA being linked tocancer. A chemical present in plastic wrap, based on PVC, is also of concern,as are the VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) present in new car smell.

Food Contamination The primary building block of polycarbonates, bisphenol A (BPA), is an estrogen-

like endocrine disruptor that may leach into food. Research finds that BPAleached from the lining of tin cans, dental sealants and polycarbonate bottlescan increase body weight of lab animals' offspring. A more recent animal studysuggests that even low-level exposure to BPA results in insulin resistance, which can lead to inflammation and heart disease.

Styrofoam; It’s Effect on the environmentStyrofoam; It’s Effect on the environment Disintegration

– Many products disintegrate within months or years of being placed inlandfills; Styrofoam takes thousands of years to decompose.

Production– Producing Styrofoam products creates pollutants and waste that end

up in water supplies and the air. These pollutants cause furtherenvironmental damage to the plants and animals that come intocontact with the runoff.

Recycling– The properties of polystyrene, which is made from petroleum, prevent it

from being recycled into anything other than more polystyrene products. This creates further pollution and runoff in production.

Landfills– Animals that eat Styrofoam products in landfills can choke on them

or be poisoned by the chemicals in polystyrene. This creates anumber of environmental problems within animal populations, especially when Styrofoam products are eaten by baby animals.

Styrofoam; It’s Effect to our HealthStyrofoam; It’s Effect to our Health Overall Health Effects

Styrene, the basic structural unit of Styrofoam is known to cause gastrointestinalcomplications and irritation of the skin, eyes and the upper respiratory tract.Long exposure to Styrofoam affects the central nervous system. Workersemployed in Styrofoam making industries have reported suffering fromheadaches, fatigue and depression, all of which are symptoms of an impairednervous system. Styrofoam also has minor effects on the functioning of thekidneys and the vascular system.

Reproductive Health Effects Women working in industries that use Styrofoam, have been observed to

undergo a higher-than-normal rate of spontaneous abortions.

Cancer International Agency for Research on Cancer in France has classified styrene as a

possible carcinogen for humans. Studies and observations based onindividuals working in plants using styrene indicate that these individuals areat a higher risk of suffering from leukemia and lymphoma than peopleemployed elsewhere.

Food Contamination Styrene enters the human body through food kept in Styrofoam cups and

plates. Higher fat content and reheating food in Styrofoam containers are twofactors that have been found to accelerate contamination of food with styrene.

The challenge!

How?

• Volunteer to help wash the dishes at home so that otherswill not feel motivated to bring in plastic and Styrofoamplates and cups.

• Refuse to buy and bring into your home, the things whichis bad for Prithvi Mata.

• Put aside selfish and laziness and be willing to use thetools granted to us by God to do the right things

The challenge!
