  • A simple solution for a better surgical experience.

    Omega-3s and Refractive Surgery

  • There are numerous benefits to choosing omega-3s both before and after your refractive surgery.

Omega-3s can improve the results of your refractive surgery.

Refractive surgery is designed to give you the best possible vision so you can see well for years to come. However, quality vision starts with a healthy ocular surface, especially preoperatively. To ensure the best possible outcome of your surgery, it is critical to prioritize the health of the ocular surface before surgery.

Prior to surgery, your doctor will employ several diagnostic tests to gauge the health of your ocular surface. This testing will indicate any surface irregularities stemming from Dry Eye. One important component of your vision is a healthy tear film. An unstable tear film has the potential to damage the ocular surface creating an unpredictable environment for your surgery.

Immediate tear film care is needed to help ensure a stable ocular surface for the best possible outcome. Numerous studies have shown that caring for your eyes with omega-3 nutriceuticals both before and after refractive surgery can have a dramatic effect on the quality of your surgery and long-term vision. By providing proper nutrition through omega-3 supplementation, the body can produce a healthy tear film. However, not all omega-3s are created equal and it’s important to know the difference.

Your tear film consists of three layers, and it’s important all are healthy before refractive surgery.

of refractive patients report increased Dry Eye symptoms after surgery. Omega-3s reduce or eliminate these symptoms.

I Don’t Feel Dry Eye Symptoms

Many times patients complain that they don’t feel Dry Eye symptoms. This is simply because it hasn’t progressed to the point where it’s a daily nuisance for patients. Refractive surgery can enhance dry eye symptoms, which is why an omega-3 plan before surgery is so important.

  • Dry eye symptoms and an unhealthy tear film create suboptimal conditions for surgery.

Omega-3 nutriceuticals help optimize the ocular surface allowing your surgeon to give you the best possible vision.

WITHOUT OMEGA-3 NUTRICEUTICALS WITH OMEGA-3 NUTRICEUTICALS

    • A bumpy, rough tear film distorts vision and creates an unpredictable surface for surgery

    • An unhealthy tear film causes less accurate pre-surgical measurements

    • Dry Eye symptoms delay healing and cause discomfort

    • A smooth tear film creates precision and accuracy during surgery

    • Healthy tear film allows for accurate pre-surgical measurements

    • Reduced dry eye symptoms promote faster healing, clearer vision, and long-term eye comfort

The tear film is responsible for up to 75% of the eye’s refractive power. In this cross-section of the eye, light passing through a rough tear film

refracts irregularly and does not focus on the retina.

A healthy tear film allows for accurate pre-surgical measurements. Light passes through the tear film without distortion, allowing more

    precision and accuracy.

  • Another critical component of a quality omega-3 is its preferred form of EPA and DHA2, which is most often found in fish. Studies have shown the preferred daily serving of omega-3s is over 2000 mg of EPA/DHA fatty acids.3 Many other over-the-counter supplements provide less than this preferred amount.

What type of omega-3 is right for me? Choosing a high quality omega-3 is recommended. Many over-the-counter omega-3s are in a synthetic, ethyl-ester form, which can be difficult for the body to absorb. While this ethyl-ester form is widely available due to the low cost of production, it also results in a lower nutritional value per serving.

Omega-3s in the re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form are the recommended form prior to your surgery. This form provides up to three times better absorption into your body than the other fish oil forms found at the store.1 Re-esterified means the alcohol has been removed and the oil has been converted back to nature’s pristine triglyceride form.

    Bioavailab

    ility

rTG is 3 times more bioavailable for absorption than EE.4

Ask your doctorIf you suffer from Dry Eye symptoms, caring for your eyes with omega-3s before and after surgery is an important step in your refractive surgery process. Take time to talk with your doctor about which omega-3 nutriceuticals are right for you.
