As acid facilitates non-haem iron absorption, about 25% of achlorhydric patients develop iron-deficiency anaemia.

Because gastric acid releases Fe3+ from food and reduces it to ferrous iron (Fe2+), achlorhydria reduces iron absorption.

Omeprazole is an acid-reducer that is used to treat acid reflux and stomach ulcers and is taken by iron-deficient individuals as part of the treatment for upper GI tract disorders that may or may not have been the primary cause of their anemia.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Lack of enough stomach acid caused by chronic use of omeprazole can affect the absorption of nutrients such as iron from foods.

Patients taking omeprazole for chronic stomach disorders may require iron injections to prevent iron deficiency anemia.
