Web Wanderings by Ethel Swartley

Michael A. Cummings http://www.michaelcummings.com

I think almost every month when I write one of these reviews to introduce everyone to a new quilter or quilt-related website, I describe someone’s quilts as “colorful” or “bright” or “cheerful.” This month, however, I really mean it! Michael Cummings is an African-American quilter in New York who makes really COLORFUL, really BRIGHT quilts that seem really CHEERFUL even though some of them commemorate dark times in our nation’s history (Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad, for example). When I opened the first photo of one of Michael’s quilts on his site (in his African Jazz series), it took my breath away. Clearly, his quilts tell stories, but they are told in many layers with lots of action going on, many details to look at, myriad images to discover as you gaze longer. Seeing his quilts is like playing “I Spy” or “I’m thinking of”; Michael tells a surface story at first glance, but the longer you look, the more details you see.

October isMembership Renewal Month!Membership dues for 2019 remain steady at $30, and we will be collecting these at the October meeting. Your dues go toward supporting the wonderful speakers, challenge prizes, printing and other club activities that we do throughout the year. At the meeting, we will ask you to fill in a brief interest survey, and then when you turn that in with your check (payable to CTQC ) or cash, I’ll fill in a new membership cards for you. Many quilt, craft and fabric shops around the country offer discounts to members of craft clubs and guilds, and now you will have something to show in order to get these discounts.

Can’t make it to the meeting? Email Ethel Swartley at [email protected] for info about mailing in your $30 and getting your membership card.

Club Projects and Events, Fall 2018Tote Bags for the Hospital The club continues to make and donate bags to the hospital. The instructions are on the website, and heavier fabrics are recommended (cotton duck, upholstery fabric). In addition, kits with fabric and instructions are available at the meetings. Thank you for your participation!

Christmas Stocking Project Mary Myrup is overseeing the project this fall, along with her friend, Patty. There is a new size for 2018, which is 2” shorter than in previous years. You can pick up a new pattern at the meetings. Cuffs at the top are optional. The stocking project is a community service project for the Parker Task Force. The Task Force requests fun children’s fabrics. You can also use children’s novelty fabrics, such as Disney theme or non-holiday fabrics. Stockings can be dropped off at the October and November meetings. All stockings will be turned in to the Task Force in November.

November Silent Auction/Annual Fundraiser November’s meeting involves a Silent Auction of new or gently used items that you bring in as a donation to the club. Fabric, thread, notions, patterns, books, sewing tools, quilt kits/blocks, quilt tops, and even yarn are all welcome. The pricier items will be auctioned off. Please have in mind a minimum price for each item.

This year we are going to have some tables set up in a Rummage Sale format, where there are set prices on items (usually books, patterns, fat quarters fall into this category) so we don’t have to keep monitoring the smaller items.

So, be looking for those items around your sewing room and closets that you feel you can pass along. The fundraiser is Common Thread’s primary way of raising funds for programs in the next year, aside from dues.

Also, we’ve had some nice items donated already (thank you, Barb Pedersen!) You are welcome to invite quilting friends to come and participate.

Please Note: If you can bring snacks for the November meeting (cookies or other finger foods), email: [email protected]
