General Manager’s Message3MBS Fine Music Melbourne continues to go from
strength to strength. Our listener numbers are up, we are making great progress with technical upgrades and our
fi nancials are looking healthier. Many thanks to you, our generous subscribers, patrons, donors,
sponsors, volunteers and staff, who are passionate about music and love to support music in Melbourne. It gives me great joy when I receive letters or phone calls from listeners who tell me how important we are in their lives. So in supporting 3MBS, know you are ensuring beautiful music 24/7 to the many who need us. Thank You!
Once again we are looking forward to a year packed with adventurous broadcasting, a very special outside broadcast, more recordings from Melbourne’s top venues and, of course, our many events starting with the rededication of our Library to Miss Betty Amsden AO on the 9th August.
The 3MBS volunteers are a wonderful community with a rich cultural and intellectual life and none more so that our much loved Robert Hooke, who passed away at the age of 88 recently. Robert presented Friday Concert Hall and Sunday Morning Classics in recent times and was an active volunteer at 3MBS until the last two weeks of his fabulously well-lived life. We were also deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of composer James Wade, 38, former presenter and coordinator of Australian Sounds. His compositions have been performed by the Australian String Quartet, Song Company, Australian Ballet, Plexus, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and numerous other orchestras and ensembles.
Absorbing listening this month will be Illuminations Salieri – His Life and Music, Henry Purcell – The First True British Composer, Music Inspired by Literature – Sir Walter Scott & Aaron Copland and Bach and the Brandenburgs. Refl ections will bring you Australian soprano Helena Dix, ABC presenter Michael Cathcart, conductor Simone Young, and violinist Edward Dusinberre. And for great music about town don’t miss Melbourne in Concert and Music in Melbourne. Also, don’t forget to check out our 3MBS Podcasts, like us on Facebook, listen through applications like TuneIn and, most of all, enjoy!

Winner of 3MBS’ The Talent 2017
Firstly, congratulations for winning season four of The Talent! Can you tell us a little about the experience of being part of the competition and what it meant to come away as the winner?
Thank you! I found performing on The Talent to be so much fun and the comments I received from the judges were very helpful. Everyone at 3MBS has been super-friendly as well. As several of my friends have previously performed in past seasons of The Talent, I decided that this year was my turn to try it. Honestly, the experience of performing was wonderful for me and to be selected as the winner for this season was just icing on the cake!
Performing on the radio is nothing like playing in front of an audience and there are so many things you have to be aware of that wouldn’t usually play on your conscious in any other environment. What did you learn about giving your best performance live on air and what were the biggest diff erences from giving a traditional performance on stage?

It is quite an odd feeling when you’re playing in a small, empty studio, and yet you know that your performance is reaching the ears of an indefi nite number of listeners, who are tuned in from various locations. Waiting for a cue to start playing immediately at the beginning of each piece was also something foreign to me. Of course, there is the daunting idea that any slips you make will be permanently stored in digital form, which is the same for all recorded performances, but at the same time you’re not worried about how you look, or other aspects of traditional performance etiquette. I was also able to invite my family into the studio to watch my performance, which made everything a whole lot more relaxed and enjoyable.
You’re keeping pretty busy at the moment, studying not only a Bachelor of Music but also a Bachelor of Laws at Monash University! How do you juggle the two and have you found that the way you study one infl uences how you approach the other?
It hasn’t always been easy to juggle the two, especially before exams or important performances or auditions. Sometimes I do wish there were more hours in the day in which to get everything done! But it has taught me to study and practise effi ciently, and always with an objective in mind. Having to switch between the analytical side of the brain required to study the law, and the creative and emotional side required to play music is a tricky thing to get used to. Nonetheless, it is always refreshing to be able to focus on things that are completely different, which tends to provide that extra bit of motivation.
When preparing for a competition or recital, what are your steps to feeling performance-ready? Do you have any tried and true methods of preparation?
One thing I always need to do is to have at least one practice run under performance conditions, usually a week or so before the performance. Setting up a video camera always gives me a bit of extra pressure, and allows me to watch myself afterwards in order to pick up anything I may not have otherwise noticed. I’ve also come to realize the importance of getting enough sleep and its effect on my playing, so I try to set aside a few extra hours in the days leading up to the performance. I still get nervous right before performing, but doing these things and practising well helps with feeling a bit more confi dent.
Between study for your two degrees and working, it must be hard to fi nd the time to wind down! How do you like to spend the precious hours you do get to use for downtime?
On most days, I enjoy just being at home with my family, not necessarily doing anything special, but just relaxing after dinner or watching television. (I’m an avid follower of Masterchef!) We’ve also just come back from a holiday in Europe, which was incredibly scenic. When I have more time to myself, I also like to dance. In high school I was passionate about breakdancing, which I know seems terribly incompatible with the piano, and until last year I used to be quite involved with a student-run dance club called Flare Dance Ensemble. Although I’m not so involved anymore, I still fi nd dancing from time to time to be very therapeutic, as well as a form of exercise which is both fun and involves creativity.
Finally, when you’re at the piano keyboard facing a particularly tricky passage or bar, how do you tackle it? Break it down for us!
I fi nd that playing slowly, in small sections and hands separately is usually the key to working out the most comfortable hand positions to play with. It is probably also a good idea to memorize the music as early as possible, by identifying patterns in the music and analysing its structure. I fi nd that after I am able play fl uently with each hand, it then becomes much easier to reduce the tempo again and put two hands together from memory. Of course, tricky passages come in all sorts of varieties, and there is no single, universal method for tackling all of them. So I think it is important to be fl exible and to design your approach based on the music in front of you!
Thanks to Rehearsal Magazine for sharing this interview with Jonathan Xian, winner of The Talent, Season 4.
The Talent Season 5 begins on 1 August at 7pm. Tune in to 3MBS online, on 103.5FM or listen to the podcast available via iTunes, or any podcasting app.

Australian National Academy of Music
by Robin Usher
The young Australian violinist Harry Bennetts will audition for a place in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in September as a result of an international scholarship scheme introduced by the Australian National Academy of Music for its alumni.
Bennetts has been in Berlin for the past 10 months working with the orchestra’s concertmaster and will return for a second season later this year. He is the only musician from the southern hemisphere among the 30 players attending the orchestra’s Karajan Academy. “I have been playing with the orchestra and worked with the American composer John Adams for a week when he was the artist in residence,” he says. “As part of my training I will audition for the place that has become available in the orchestra.”
He was speaking on a return visit to Melbourne in July for the announcement of a new ANAM initiative to celebrate outstanding alumni by providing a national series of performances in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Bennetts, who won national competitions at ANAM in 2015, performed with pianist Louisa Breen, in July. A second series of alumni recitals featuring clarinettist Lloyd van’t Hoff, pianist Alex Raineri and cellist Jack Bailey will conclude at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 9 October.
At the conclusion of his Berlin stay, Bennetts will return home to perform the Korngold Violin Concerto with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under Benjamin Northey as part of the orchestra’s 2018
subscription series. “This is a great opportunity to gain experience as a soloist, like the alumni recitals,” he says. “This can be so hard to find.”
ANAM’s director, Nick Deutsch, who has maintained his relationship with the Leipzig’s Hochschule für Musik where he taught before moving to Melbourne at the start of last year, hopes to announce extensions of the scholarship scheme with other international orchestras later this year. “We have an intense relationship with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and these sorts of reciprocal ties will apply when the new orchestras come on board,” he says.
The scheme and the alumni recital series are part of ANAM’s growing profile beyond its South Melbourne campus. The series is a result of new relationships between ANAM, the performance venues and the John T. Reid philanthropic foundation. “The idea is to provide a platform to expose the expertise of our alumni so audiences can appreciate them,” he says. “It is a celebration of what ANAM can achieve and is really an investment for the future.”
A recent survey has found ANAM alumni make up about 20 per cent of the membership of many Australian orchestras, including the MSO, rising to 28 per cent of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. “There has been considerable growth in the 20 years the Academy has been around,” Deutsch says. “It has really taken off in the past decade.”
Another sign of this success is ANAM’s orchestral morning series at the Melbourne Recital Centre, which in August will see a performance of Mozart’s Gran Partita wind serenade. “ANAM took over the morning Mozart series this year and it has been such a success we hope it will expand by an extra performance to five in 2018,” he says.

Pieter Wispelwey
by Robin Usher
Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey has been coming to Australia for the past 25 years but never before has he offered a program as challenging as the one he will perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre in August.
Over three consecutive evenings he will for the fi rst time play all Beethoven’s cello works, the six solo suites of J S Bach and Brahms cello sonatas as part of the Great Performers’ series. “I have done two of the three over a weekend but this is the fi rst time I will do the three back to back,” he says, adding that he pushed for the expanded series after he had been invited to combine the Beethoven and Brahms works in mixed programs over two evenings, accompanied by Melbourne pianist Caroline Almonte.
“Concentrating on just one composer in an evening adds to understanding of his style and is extremely rewarding,” he says. “Listening becomes more effortless when there is no switching because it offers completely different associations. In the past audiences have said that spending more than two hours with Beethoven or Brahms is not enough.”
He says light-heartedly he offered to perform the Bach cycle, which he is also performing in Sydney, in between the other two composers to give Almonte a breather. But even though he pushed for the extra night he acknowledges that it is a daunting prospect, especially as the Bach suites take more than three hours to play, with two intervals. “I don’t think I need to make it a tradition and do it every year,” he says.
Wispelwey, 54, promises to perform all three nights without using scores. “I have been familiar with the repertoire since I was a student in my mid-teens when I began giving concerts in Amsterdam playing the complete cello works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Britten,” he says.
Since then he has recorded the Bach cycle three times and is regarded as one of the great performers of our time on both modern and Baroque instruments. But he is keen to release a live recording and says the Recital Centre concerts could be considered. “It might be a cliché but playing Bach is like breathing or eating – they are what you do every day,” he says. “Understanding has evolved since the six suites were brought back to public attention by Pablo Casals about 100 years ago.”
He describes the Gran Partita as an extraordinary piece of music that is a pillar of the wind repertoire. “It was a breakthrough in Mozart’s time because it was the fi rst to require an ensemble of 13 musicians and to take an hour to perform. It is performed all the time in Europe but not so often in Australian because of its size.”
Deutsch will take part in the performance, playing oboe, alongside German clarinettist Thorsten Johanns and Norwegian bassoonist Ole Kristian Dahl. “We have an ongoing relationship with Johanns and Dahl, who came to Melbourne in 2013,” he says. “This is the fi rst time they have been able to return but several ANAM students have travelled to Weimar and Mannheim to study with them.”
ANAM provides 180 concerts at its South Melbourne headquarters every year and this program is being boosted with performances by soprano Greta Bradman with German conductor Matthias Foremny on 18-19 August and English pianist Imogen Cooper on 26 August. “We are building the trust of our audiences by the quality of our performances and the breadth of our programs,” Deutsch says.

Violinist can carry a tune
The Russian violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky received rave reviews when he first performed with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra three years ago. He is returning in August along with his 350-year-old violin made in Cremona by Francesco Ruggeri.
He is also expected to show his skills as a counter-tenor which, combined with his bowing abilities, make him a rare international musician, hence the concert title, The Singing Violin. He received the Ruggeri violin at the 2009 Jumpstart competition in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
The prize-winning virtuoso teaches at the Moscow Conservatory where he established the group La Voce Strumentale in 2011. He regularly performs in Europe and North America with such Baroque groups as Concerto Köln and Il Giardino Armonico.
Dmitry Sinkovsky performs The Singing Violin with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in the Melbourne Recital Centre on 5-6 August.
Indigenous choir sings in desert languages
A little-known aspect of Australia’s musical culture will be revealed when the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir performs in the native languages of the Central Desert in Melbourne in August.
The choir gained international acclaim in 2015 when it toured Germany singing Arrkanala Lyilhitjika which tells the story of 120 years
But that does not mean the present generation of musicians appreciate Bach’s language. “The music only began to speak to me after I spent hundreds of hours playing the Baroque cello with its lighter tone.”
He explains how he realized his approach to the music had evolved after conversations with the great harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt. The first came after he performed Bach’s first suite for him in his Amsterdam apartment that had been furnished from the 18th century with paintings and harpsichords. “It was quite intimidating and after he heard me play he asked if I had been listening to Casals’ recordings because my approach was so serious,” Wispelwey says. “This surprised me because I had not been.”
Leonhardt went to one of the harpsichords in the room and played the first suite in such a simple way that it could have been music-box music. The two musicians next met a few years later at a music festival where the cellist had given a recital. “We were talking backstage and he congratulated me on my approach. I was surprised because I didn’t think it had been one of my better performances. But Leonhardt said it had really danced. This made me realize why the music has to lift the spirits.”
He lists his aims in performing the works as elegance, speech and dance. He says the suites were written in a different way from the cello works of Beethoven and Brahms. “The six pieces cover a short time frame while the cello writings of the other composers come from across their whole lives.” He says the three composers could not be more different, “People forget there was half a century between Beethoven and Brahms. They are a world apart.”
Although Wispelwey prefers the Baroque cello to play Bach, he will be playing his 1760 Guadignini instrument at the Recital Centre. “It is timeless,” he says. His August performances will be his second Australian visit this year and reflects his familiarity with this country, where he has played often with state orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet.
He performed in April with the ASQ and Almonte at festivals in Margaret River and Dunkeld which he first visited six years ago. He is so familiar with the Quartet that he has now performed with its three latest incarnations.

Caroline Almonte perform

of continuous choral practice. It combines centuries-old traditional singing in the Western Arrarnta and Pitjanjatjara languages with arrangements from the Baroque and Romantic eras introduced by German missionaries in the late 19th century.

Takács Quartet returns for Musica Viva
It is a tribute to the longevity and popularity of the Takács Quartet that its next national tour will be the ninth it has made for Musica Viva. The group will present two programs featuring the premiere of the latest work by Carl Vine, Musica Viva’s artistic director, who boasts a long friendship with the group. Child’s Play, his sixth quartet, was commissioned by the organization with the support of Carnegie Hall, the Seattle Commissioning Club and Michael and Frederique Katz.
Both programs will include works from Haydn’s last complete chamber music collection, Op.76. The first on 12 August will be made up with a late work by Beethoven, his 12th quartet, Op.127. The second, on 22 August, will finish with Dvorák’s last purely chamber work, his 14th quartet, Op.105.
The Takács Quartet formed in 1975 in Budapest and moved to the US in 1983 to take up the position as Quartet-in-Residence at Colorado University in Boulder. Its make-up since 2005 includes original members violinist Károly Schranz and cellist András Fejér, as well as English violinist Edward Dusinberre and American violist Geraldine Walther.
The Takács Quartet will perform in the Melbourne Recital Centre at 7pm on 12 & 22 August.

Henry Purcell: The First True British ComposerThis is a journey throughout 2 centuries of music, which forged the
English nation. 350 years ago, London, a city recovering after civil war, plague and fi re, was home to the great British composer, Henry Purcell, the fi rst of four towering fi gures who shaped the music and musical life of the emerging United Kingdom. The others, Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn, along with Purcell, brought a fresh sound and fresh ideas to a land in the process of transforming itself into a modern society. Join Anthea Same as she explores the life of Henry Purcell, how he changed the way we make, and even hear and think about music.

Bach and the BrandenburgsAmong the most popular works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach are the six concertos
presented in 1721 to the Margrave of Brandenburg. It seems extraordinary that, despite their musical perfection and sense of joy, their recipient neither had them performed nor deigned to thank their creator. In this program John Barns discusses the provenance of the concertos and the nature of the music.
