The world is constantly trying to tell you about your

identity. Social media and television shows say

that your identity lies in what you look like. Books

and magazines say that your identity lies in how

successful you are. Society says that your identity

lies in your relationships and who you spend your

time with. But, what if your identity was less about

what you do and more about who you are and

whose you are? Colossians 3:12 says that in Christ

you are “holy, chosen, and beloved.” In this study,

you will spend 30 days on what it means to have

the identity of God’s holy, chosen, and beloved.

I encourage you to take your time with each day

and prepare your heart beforehand to receive

what the Lord has for you through His Word. At the

end of each day you will have the opportunity to

meditate and reflect on what you learned. There

will also be verses at the bottom of some days that

I encourage you to memorize. My prayer for you

is that through your time reading and studying

God’s Word you will not only understand your

identity in Christ, but live out the identity that you

have in Him.

What do you think of when you hear the word holy?

The word “holy” is translated from the Greek word hagios to mean sacred, set apart and a saint. For the first ten days of this study we will focus on what the Bible says about being set apart, sacred, and a saint. But, before we dive into what it means for us to be holy in these ways, let us take a look at the One who is the very definition of holy.

Read Psalm 22:3, Psalm 71:22, and Ezekiel 39:7. What name does God have in these verses?

Turn to these verses and write what they say about God and what our response to His presence should be.

Why is it important that we recognize God’s holiness before we consider our own?

Do you worship the Holy One daily? How can you discipline yourself so that you worship God daily?

Spend some time in prayer thanking and praising God for who He is and ask Him to give you a heart that responds to Him in worship regularly.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “set apart”?

Did you know that God set us apart from the beginning? Turn to Genesis 1:24-27. What made Adam and Eve different than the animals?

Notice that animals were made according to their kind, but it doesn’t say the same for mankind. In whose image were humans made?

What does it mean that Adam and Eve were created in God’s image and likeness?

God designed humans to be made in the Imago Dei, which means image of God. This means that Adam and Eve reflected the holiness of their Creator. Because of this, they had a perfect relationship with the Lord. They were able to freely walk with Him and share in the creation He had made, but they only had to do one thing.

Read Genesis 2:16-17. What was the one rule God gave man?

If only this rule was kept. Now read Genesis 3.

The relationship Adam and Eve shared with the Lord was now broken because of sin. Even more tragic, the image of God in man was now marred. They were separated from God and their holiness was now clouded by the sin they caused to enter the world. They were now unholy people. This is often referred to as the Fall.

Turn to Romans 5:12. What was the result of Adam and Eve’s sin for mankind?

But there is hope! Read Romans 5:17. God didn’t want His people to be destined for death. His redemptive plan for mankind was to bring His Son Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our sins. We will explore this deeper throughout this study, but for now take a moment in prayer to thank the Lord that He didn’t want to leave you in your sinful state.

Yesterday we looked at how mankind was made set apart in creation and how the entrance of sin caused our holiness to be tainted. Today we will focus on how God made His people set apart in another way in order to restore their holiness.

Before we get started, let me give a brief summary of what happened in the rest of the Book of Genesis and in the beginning of the Book of Exodus. God promises a man named Abraham that his offspring will result in the start of a great nation and He was going to give them a land for them to dwell.

Turn to Genesis 12:1-3. What does God say His people would be by Abraham?

Abraham had a son named Isaac who then had a son named Jacob. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel and told him the promise He made to Abraham would be fulfilled through Israel. Jacob had 12 sons who had their own children, and they were called the Israelites. The Israelites were oppressed because of their great number but, in a miraculous way, God set the Israelites free from their bondage and led them to the land that He first promised to Abraham. God then used a man named Moses to speak on His behalf for the Israelites.

Turn to Exodus 19:1-6. In verse 4, what does God say He did for His people?

What does God say the Israelites would be? What did they have to do in order to be this?

God wanted to make a nation for His people because He desired to bring them closer to Himself. He wanted to make a way to mend the broken relationship that resulted from the Fall. All He expected from them was obedience and they would be a holy nation, set apart from the rest of the sinful world.

God expects the same thing from us today. Just as God wanted to bring Israel to Himself, He brings sinners back to Himself through Jesus. Because of this, those that believe in Him are to be set apart from the sinners around them.

I want you to take a moment to meditate on the fact God wants to bring you back to Himself. Write a prayer below thanking Him for this and ask Him for His help in keeping yourself set apart in the world.

In the rest of Exodus 19, God prepares to come down to Mt. Sinai to give specific instruction to Moses on how the Israelites were to be obedient.

Read Exodus 19:10-11. What does God tell Moses and the Israelites to do in verse 10?

The root word of consecrate is qadash which means to be separate and set apart. Why do you think God wanted His people to be consecrated? What did washing their clothes have to do with it? Read 2 Samuel 12:20 for more insight into being consecrated.

When I was a little girl, getting ready for church was a huge deal. My mom made sure that both my sister and I were squeaky clean from a bath and had us put on our best, neatly ironed and washed clothes. Why? Because my mom wanted to prepare us for being in the Lord’s house. She wanted us to give glory and honor to God in the way we presented ourselves.

In the same way, the Israelites were to be clean because they were going to be in the presence of the Holy One.

I have an awful habit of keeping dirty clothes on my floor. I try to keep them in an organized mess so that they don’t mix with any clean clothes that I may have accidently left on the floor. But, often times this fails and my clean clothes mix with my dirty clothes. When it comes time to do laundry, I can easily see what is clean and what is unclean. Why? Because the dirty clothes are different than the clean. They’ve got dirt, wrinkles, stains and spills. The clean clothes stand out among the dirty; they are perfect, crisp, and without stain.

Being consecrated caused the Israelites to be set apart because they were different than the rest of sinful mankind. In a world of

unclean people they were to be separate by being a clean people, obedient and holy to the Lord.

There were a couple of other reasons the Israelites had to be consecrated. Turn to Leviticus 20:7-8 and 26. What were the reasons?God desires us to be holy because He Himself is holy. He is the One that makes us holy, therefore everything we do should point back to Him and give Him the glory. Have you thought about how your actions reflect the holiness of the Lord? Meditate on this and ask the Lord to reveal ways you can represent His holiness.

Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the

master of the house, ready for every good work.

Once the people consecrated themselves, God descended to Mt. Sinai and gave instruction to Moses on how the Israelites were to act. In Exodus 20, God gave Moses 10 commandments for Israel to follow. He also gave other rules and regulations in later passages in Exodus, as well as in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These rules and regulations are what the Old Testament calls the Law. Obedience to the Law caused the Israelites to be in right standing with the Lord resulting in holiness. However, disobedience to certain laws could lead to death. As sinful humans, no matter how obedient they were, the people were bound to sin at some point. Because of this, God designated priests to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people in order to forgive their sins. This washing away of sin is what the Bible calls atonement or propitiation. The priests were to kill an animal and sacrifice it which in turn covered the sins of the people. However, this atonement was only temporary.

Read Hebrews 10:1-4 and verse 11.Why were the animal sacrifices not enough?

What did the people need in order to have complete atonement for their sins?

Read Hebrews 10:5-10.What was God’s will?

According to verse 10, what has happened to us because of Christ’s sacrifice?

Turn to Hebrews 7:26-28. How is Christ, our Great High Priest, different than the priests in the Old Testament?

Turn to Romans 3:21-26. How does God want us to respond to Christ’s propitiation?

Take a moment to meditate on what you learned today. Thank Jesus for being your Great High Priest and for taking your place by sacrificing Himself on the Cross. Thank Him that the cycle of temporary atonement was finished at the Cross and you no longer have to keep seeking atonement for your sins.

The word atonement not only means to cover, but to also make reconciliation.

If I have an argument with my friend and our relationship is hurt by it, I want to go to her and make amends, to fix what is broken. In other words, I want to reconcile with her.

What does reconciliation mean?

Turn to Colossians 1:21-23.Why did we need reconciliation?

Who gave this to us? In what way?

What is the result of this reconciliation?

How do we continue in holiness?

Verse 23 says this reconciliation of us to God is the hope of the gospel. The word gospel translated means “good news.” This reconciliation is good news for us! Christ’s death on the Cross has caused those who believe in Him as Savior and Lord to be restored in their relationship with God. Their sins have been covered through atonement and their brokenness has been fixed through reconciliation.

This reconciliation has also caused us to be “holy, without blemish and free from accusation.” But, we must continue in our faith and hold on to the hope of the gospel in order to maintain our holiness.

Spend some time thanking the Lord that He has reconciled you back to Himself. Thank Him that because of this reconciliation you have been made holy and are no longer guilty of your sin. Ask Him to help you walk in faith as you continue to live your life for Him.

For, if while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been

reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!

Jesus’ death on the Cross not only brought atonement and reconciliation, but also provided justification.

Let’s return to Romans 3:21-26.What does verse 23 say all humanity has done?

How is justification accomplished?

Who are the ones that are justified (vs. 26)?

Justification means “the act of God declaring men free from guilt.” A helpful way of understanding this word is to think because of Jesus it is “just as if I” have never sinned.

Now turn to Ephesians 2:1-10.What does verse 8 say we’ve been saved by?

The salvation given to us by Christ is a gift, given to us by grace through faith alone. This means there is nothing we can do on our own in order to obtain salvation. We don’t need to try to clean ourselves up in order to receive salvation; we are given it just as we are. We don’t need to work harder or try to be better; we are simply supposed to have faith. Isn’t this so freeing? Jesus not only frees us from guilt from our sin, but He also sets us free from striving to save ourselves. Our works have nothing to do with our salvation, therefore we can stop the legalistic mindset that we sometimes find ourselves in. There is no more “I must try to be good so that I can be saved” or “because I’ve sinned I don’t deserve salvation.”

Read Romans 5:6-9.Verse 8 says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This means that we were given salvation despite our sin and because of God’s great love and mercy.

If you’ve never thought about this free gift that Christ has offered you, would you take a moment and consider this? Will you think through the sacrifice that Jesus made for you and give your life to Him? All you need to do is to believe and repent.*

If you’ve been walking with Jesus for some time now, would you take a moment and remind yourself of your salvation? Thank the Lord for how He has saved you and the new life He has given you. If you still find yourself in the mentality of trying to be perfect for the Lord, will you ask the Lord to remind you of the grace He has given you? Ask Him to set you free from striving to be the one to save yourself and that you will walk in the freedom you have in Him.

What do you think of when you hear the word saint?

Turn to Ephesians 2:19 and fill in the blank below.

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with _____________ and members of the household of God.”

Based off of your translation you should have put either the saints or God’s people. Both words are correct because to be a saint means to be one of God’s people! To be a citizen means that you are given membership in a certain place and for those that believe in Christ, we belong in the family of God. We will look at what it means to be a part of God’s family more later in this study, but for now let’s focus on being a saint.

In his book The Holiness of God, R.C Sproul writes, “To be a saint means to be separated. But it means more than that. The saint also is to be involved in a vital process of sanctification. We are to be purified daily in the growing pursuit of holiness. If we are justified, we must also be sanctified.”

According to Sproul, what is the definition of sanctification?

When we profess our faith in Christ and receive the identity of a saint, there needs to be change that happens inside of us. We are to abandon our sinful ways and undergo sanctification, a daily process of becoming like Christ.

Turn to 1 Peter 1:14-15. Does this sound familiar? What Old Testament passage is Peter quoting? Refer back to Day 4 if needed.

The command given to the Israelites is the same command given to us today. As God’s saints, we are to be holy in our actions because the Lord, the One who sent His Son to die for us, is holy.

In the Old Testament, holiness allowed the Israelites to dwell in the presence of the Lord in the temple. In the New Testament, the temple was considered to be the highest place of worship to God because of His presence there. Now in Christ, we are considered the temple, because God’s Spirit dwells in us.

Turn to 2 Corinthians 6:16-18.According to these verses what are we called?

What does God promise in these verses?

According to these verses what command is given to us?

Turn to 2 Corinthians 7:1. What are we to do because of the promises in 2 Corinthians 6:16-18?

The command in 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 and 2 Corinthians 7:1 involves the process of sanctification. We are to both separate ourselves from sin and rid ourselves of sin in order for holiness to be complete. Our holiness will never be fully complete here on earth, but that is why sanctification is called a process. Daily we are to become more and more like Christ by our actions.

Think about your actions. Can you say that they are helping you become more like Christ or less like Him? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you continue in sanctification and give you the strength to execute holy actions instead of sinful actions. Thank God that you are considered His temple, and ask that He will remind you of your responsibility to pursue holiness.

Yesterday we talked about how our sanctification gives God glory and shapes us into Christlikeness. Today we will focus on what this process actually looks like in our daily lives.

Turn to Colossians 3:5-9. List below the things Paul says to put off.

Now read Colossians 3:12-14. List below the things Paul says to put on.

The verb for put on, endyo, gives the impression of sinking into a garment. Just as the Israelites were consecrated to be made holy, Christ has consecrated us by the washing of His blood and has made us holy. Now that our bodies have been washed, it’s time to put on some new clothes.

Turn to Ephesians 4:17-24. Why are we to put off the old self?

What is our new self-created to be like? With what attributes?

Now look at verses 31-32. What words do you see repeated from Colossians 3:5-9? What about from 3:12-14?

Read Romans 6:15-23. According to these verses who did we used to be? Who are we now?

What is the result of this?

The verses that we have read today are not the only ones that talk about sanctification. Throughout Scripture we are shown how to live and how not to live and how to put these actions into practice. This may seem overwhelming or impossible, but have hope! Second Corinthians 3:18 says that the Spirit “makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.” This means that we are not on our own with our struggles against sin and our attempts to put on our new self. We have the Holy Spirit inside of us who gives us the power to fight against our flesh and helps us in the pursuit of holiness.

Take a moment to think about how you are putting on the new self. Do you find yourself putting on the words you saw in Ephesians 4 and Colossians 3? Or do you find yourself still succumbing to the things of the flesh and what we are to put off? Ask for the Holy Spirit’s strength in helping you to put off sinful desires and actions and that you will daily put on the characteristics of holiness and continue to walk in them.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

As God’s saints, we undergo sanctification by putting off the old self and putting on the new self to be more like Christ. But, sanctification involves another action as well.

Turn to these verses and write what we are supposed to do.

What do all of these verses have in common?

Turn to Romans 8:5-7. What are the differences between those who set their mind on the flesh versus the Spirit?

Sanctification not only has to do with our physical actions, but our mental actions as well. The process of walking in the new self involves having a new mindset. Just as we control our actions to walk in holiness, we are to also control our thoughts. Not only this, but if we learn how to change the direction of our thoughts, right actions will follow as a result.

Our mind is powerful and we can easily fall into sin because of the thoughts that wage war. But, we are not alone in this battle.

Turn to Ephesians 6:10-17. According to these verses, Who helps us in the battle against sin? How?

List all of what you are to arm yourself with.

Notice that verse 17 says to put on the helmet of salvation. If a person is fighting in a war and has everything protected except for his head, they are soon to be hurt. An unprotected mind is susceptible to the arrows of the enemy. In the same way, we are to keep our mind protected by putting on the helmet of salvation, as well as the other parts of the armor. Guarding our minds requires us to be anchored in truth by being in God’s Word and holding fast to the truths and promises in Scripture.

What have you been doing to guard your mind? What can you do to make sure you continue in the renewing of your mind and taking your thoughts captive?

Spend some time asking the Lord to help you sanctify your mind and for strength to fight against sinful thoughts and the lies from the enemy.

Israel was God’s holy, set apart people. This means that they were chosen specifically by God. The word chosen in Greek, eklektos, means to be picked out and chosen by God.

Turn to Deuteronomy 14:2 and Psalm 135:4. What was Israel chosen as according to these verses?

Turn to 1 Peter 2:9-10. What does Peter say believers are? How does this relate to Deuteronomy 14:2 and Psalm 135:4?

Believers are considered more than just His possession and priesthood. In the Old Testament, only Israel was considered to be God’s chosen people, but in the New Testament we see God doing something new.

Turn to Ephesians 3:6. Who do we see share in the people of God? According to this verse, how did this happen?

In the Bible, the Gentiles were those that were not Israelites. Because of this, they were seen as less than because their status was much lower than the Israelites. But, because of Jesus’ work on the cross, the Gentiles were allowed to receive salvation, as well, resulting in them joining with the Israelites as one chosen body. This means for us that anybody is welcome to believe in Christ and receive salvation, no matter who they are or where they come from. In Him, we are a chosen race and a holy nation.

But, the identity given to us in 1 Peter 2:9-10 involves a purpose as well.

According to verse 9, what are we to do because of who we are?

If you believe in Christ, the change that has happened inside of you and the identity you have been given isn’t supposed to be kept to yourself. You are to proclaim what has happened to you to the people around you. The sin that occurred from the Fall separated you which prevented you from being part of God’s people and without mercy. But, because of Christ Jesus, your salvation gives you mercy and makes you a part of God’s chosen people. To be chosen by God is an amazing privilege, one that comes with a responsibility to proclaim to the world about the Lord’s mercy in your life. He has brought you out of darkness into His wonderful light, and your life is forever changed because of it. This is something to celebrate!

Take a moment to meditate on the identity given to you in 1 Peter 2:9-10. How are you going to live your life in light of this identity? Spend some time thanking Jesus for the identity He has given you by His blood and ask that you will live this out by proclaiming His excellencies to the world.

Before we look further into what it means to be God’s chosen, we need to spend a little more time learning about the One who gave us our new identity.

Read Luke 23:33-35 and Isaiah 42:1.What is Jesus called?

Turn to 1 Peter 1:18-22. When was He chosen or foreknown? Why?

Now turn to 1 Peter 2:4-6. What is Jesus called in these verses? According to these verses, what does this mean for us?

Christ was God’s Chosen One, selected by God before the foundation of the world to come to earth for a unique purpose. Read the following verses and write why Jesus was chosen to come.

Scripture says so much more about what Jesus was chosen to do. All of those things center on His main purpose, to die for our sins and give us a new life.

We can’t view ourselves as God’s chosen people without first reflecting on the Chosen One who gave us our salvation. He was picked by God before the foundation of the world to die for us and, because of Him, those that believe in Him are given the identity as the chosen people of God.

Spend some time meditating on what Jesus has done for you. Thank God for choosing His Son to die for you and ask that you will remember this every time you reflect on your identity in Christ.

He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of His own purpose and grace, which He

gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.

We all have been chosen for something at some point in our lives, whether for a job, acceptance into a school, for a reward or by somebody romantically. We know what it feels like to have been picked, but also know what it feels like to be rejected.

This was a regular occurrence in my high school gym class. Being a scrawny teenager who was not athletically inclined whatsoever, waiting to be picked by a captain for dodgeball or kickball teams was torture. Game after game I would continuously find myself one of the last ones picked and letting my team down by taking a ball to the face.

In most circumstances, people are chosen because of a certain quality they possess. For my high school gym class, it would be those with great hand-eye coordination skills or those who were able-bodied. However, this is different for those who have been saved by Christ. We have already discussed how our salvation is not accomplished by works, but we also need to see the calling God gives His chosen ones was not given to us because of any skill or attribute we may have.

Turn to Deuteronomy 7:6-8. Why did God choose Israel in these verses?

Notice that Israel was not chosen because of their number; in fact their size was small compared to other nations. Israel was picked by the Lord simply because of His love for them and His commitment to the covenant He had with them. God continues this pattern throughout the entirety of Scripture, choosing the most unlikely people for His purpose and plan.

In the Book of 1 Samuel, Samuel was tasked by God to choose the next King of Israel. Turn to 1 Samuel 16:6-12.

What does Samuel say in verse 6? Why do you think he thought this?

What does God tell Samuel not to consider? What does He say that He looks at?

What does this say about God’s character?

What do these truths about God’s character mean for how He sees you?

God’s love is unconditional, which means that we don’t need to meet any kind of condition in order to receive His love and salvation. Take some time to reflect on this truth of God’s unconditional love and thank Him that you are given a calling because of this great love.

God not only chooses us for a calling not based on skill or value, but also calls us despite our sinful pasts. The life of the apostle Paul exemplifies this truth.

Read Acts 9:1-16.What was Paul’s mission in going to Damascus?

Turn to 1 Timothy 1:12-16. In your own words, describe what Jesus did in Paul’s life.

If Jesus did this in Paul’s life, what does He do in our lives?

Read 2 Timothy 1:8-12. What does Paul say Christ appointed him as?

In 1 Timothy 1:12-16 Paul calls himself the worst of sinners, a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent to Christ. But, he doesn’t let those words define him any longer. He recognizes in 2 Timothy 1:8-12 that because of God’s grace, he is now a preacher, apostle, and teacher for Jesus.

In 2 Timothy 1:8-9, Paul uses plural words to show that he is not the only one changed and called by the Lord. He says that Jesus has “saved us and called us to a holy calling” and that this calling isn’t because of “our works” but because of the grace of Jesus Christ.

This is wonderful news for us! Jesus can take someone like Paul, a murderer of Christians, and radically transform him to be a chosen instrument for His calling. This is what God can do in anyone’s life. No one is too deep in sin to turn to Jesus. No one is too broken to be used by the Lord. Hebrews 8:12 says that God forgives our wickedness and remembers our sins no more.

Take some time to thank God for His grace that covers all sins. Thank Him that He has chosen you for a calling despite your past or the sins you’ve struggled with, and ask Him to help you walk in what He’s calling you to without any guilt, knowing you have been set free from sin.

Being chosen for a calling and a purpose can be exciting, but often we can feel as if we aren’t equipped to do what God wants us to do. We can feel as if there are other people that are better fit for the task, leaving us with doubt or causing us to give up altogether.

This was a reality for me during my time in undergraduate studies. When God called me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication studies I thought that He had mistaken me for another girl. Being a quiet, introverted person, the thought of public speaking made me want to crawl under a rock. But, what I learned over the years, even with shaking knees and a trembling voice, is that God doesn’t call the qualified, but He qualifies the called.

An example of this is when God calls Moses in Exodus 4. Turn to verses 10-12. Why did Moses feel unfit for God’s call? What did God say in response?

Now read Deuteronomy 34:10-12. Moses may have had a messy beginning, and a lot of mistakes in the process of God’s plan, but he was used by the Lord to do some mighty things. When God calls us, He will equip us to carry out the purpose He has for us. All that we have to do is trust Him and allow Him to work in us, taking one faithful step at a time down the path He designed. God not only qualifies us for His plan; He also uses it to show His glory.

Turn to 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. What was Paul lacking in these verses? Why was Paul content with these things?

Turn to 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. Looking at the verses in both these books, what words do you see repeated?

Paul uses these words to contrast our weakness with the power of Christ and the Holy Spirit. When a piece of pottery is held to the sun, light shines through the spaces that are cracked. In the same way, our weaknesses are designed to show the glory and might of the Holy One.

When you begin to doubt the plan God has for you, remember the words of Paul in Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Take heart, sister! The Lord promises to fulfill His purpose for you.

Spend some time in prayer thanking the Lord that He is the One that equips you. Ask Him to help you walk confidently in what He has planned for you even through weakness and doubt.

Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves,

but our competence comes from God.

When you received Christ as your Savior, you were given entrance into something amazing; you were brought into the family of God.

Turn to Galatians 4:4-7. Who has given us redemption and what do we receive because of Him?

Turn to Romans 8:14-17. According to these verses, who are the children of God?

Who brought about our adoption?

In these two passages, what are we no longer? What are we now?

The word “Abba” in these verses translated means “Daddy.” Even as an adult, I still love to call my father “Daddy,” because it reminds me of the special relationship I share with him. As a daughter of the Heavenly King, you have the privilege of calling Him Daddy. You might have a strained relationship with your earthly father, or even no relationship at all, but remember that as a child of God, you have a Heavenly Father who cares for you and loves you no matter what.

You are also given another identity because you are a child of God. What does Romans 8:17 say?

In biblical times, an heir would receive the highest amount of wealth from the family. As the Lord’s heir, we are given the greatest inheritance one can receive; entrance into the Kingdom of God.

Colossians 1:12 says that God has “qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.” This means that as a child of God you are given the ability to share in the glorious privilege of eternity in heaven with not only God, but your brothers and sisters in Christ. In Christ Jesus, you have a family and a home forever.

How does your identity of a child of God bring you comfort? Spend some time meditating on this and write out a prayer below thanking the Lord for this identity.

The unfortunate thing about earthly families is the potential of them breaking apart. Some children experience their family being taken away from them, while others feel the pain of a parent leaving intentionally. As we discussed yesterday, being a part of the family of God is forever. That means nothing on earth can break this family apart.

Turn to Romans 8:31-37.What do verses 31-32 say about our Heavenly Father?

What do verses 33-34 say about us as God’s chosen ones?

According to verses 35-39 what cannot separate us from Christ’s love? How does this bring comfort to you?

Hebrews 13:5b-6 says, “…for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?’”

How does this truth bring you comfort?

As a daughter of the King, there is absolutely nothing on earth that can take you away from your Heavenly Father. His promise to never leave you is a permanent promise that isn’t conditional on your circumstances or anything you’ve ever done. Even when you experience abandonment on earth, God promises He will never desert or forsake you.

In his article “Relief for Lonely Hearts,” John Piper says, “There are no orphans in [God’s] family. There are no abandoned children in His family. You’re not alone — ever.” Spend some time thanking the

Lord for the eternal security you have as a member of His family. Ask that He will help you remember this truth when you feel abandoned or lonely and thank Him for always being with you.

For the Lord loves justice; He will not forsake His saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

As God’s adopted children we receive the privilege of love and security, but another unlikely privilege as well; that of discipline.

When I was disciplined as a little girl, my mom would always say, “This hurts me more than it hurts you.” I didn’t understand what that meant until the day my mom told me to discipline her in the same way that she was disciplining me. I remember being distraught and unable to do it because I didn’t want to hurt her. It was at that moment that I grasped my mom’s statement. My mom’s discipline hurt her because of how much she loved me. She didn’t want to do it, but she knew that I needed it in order to learn. In the same way as we are disciplined by our earthly parents, as God’s children we are disciplined by our Heavenly Father.

Read Hebrews 12:4-11. Why does God discipline?

What does it mean if you’re not disciplined?

What do we share in because of God’s discipline?

Based on verse 11, what does our discipline produce?

Now turn to John 15:1-2. How does this relate to what you learned in Hebrews 12?

Pruning isn’t the most enjoyable process for a tree. It has to experience its branches and leaves removed by force, but because of this pruning it is now able to produce more fruit. In the same way, pruning can be painful for us, but God uses it to bear fruit in us. This

means that God will often remove things from us that are preventing us from growth. This is the heart of discipline. God uses discipline to cause us to grow in our faith and make us into stronger vessels for His service.

May this be encouraging to you! When you are experiencing difficult times in your life, remind yourself that you are God’s child, and as His child He is using the situation to discipline you to bear more fruit for Him. Spend some time with the Lord and meditate on what you learned today. Thank Him that you are His child, and as a loving Father, He disciplines you because He knows what is best for you. Ask Him for strength to remain steadfast during His discipline and that you will be openhanded to what He is teaching you through it.

Our identity as the chosen people of God also gives us a role we are commanded to fulfill; that of an ambassador.

Turn to Matthew 28:16-20.What five things does Jesus command the disciples to do?

This passage of scripture is what the Bible calls “The Great Commission.” This Great Commission is a command from Jesus to go into the world and make disciples. Notice He says, “disciples of all nations,” not just some people or the people that are most convenient to us. Our task as Christians is to spread the Good News of the Gospel to our town, our nation, and to the ends of the earth.

What does Jesus tell us at the end of verse 20?

This should bring us so much comfort! Jesus promises that He will be with us not just sometimes, but always. This means that when we share the gospel with others we can be confident in sharing because Jesus is with us as we are sharing, strengthening us and giving us the words to speak.

This Great Commission is our task as ambassadors for Christ. An ambassador is someone who is sent by a sovereign on their behalf to represent them on a mission.

Turn to 2 Corinthians 5:17-20. What is the ministry of reconciliation? What task are we given because of it?

Verse 20 says that we are Christ’s ambassadors and as His ambassadors God is using us to make an appeal on His behalf. An appeal is a serious or urgent request and this request is that people would consider being reconciled back to God.

Does your heart ache for the people around you to be reconciled to God? Or do you go about your day-to-day life without thinking about their salvation? It is never too late to start!

Spend some time in prayer asking the Lord to break your heart for the people who do not know the Lord and ask Him to give you opportunities to share the gospel with others. Think of some people that you can begin sharing the gospel with and write their names below. Pray for these people regularly and ask that God will use you as His ambassador to share the Good News with them.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is home to thousands of pieces of artwork. Patrons stroll the halls and gaze at each unique creation in awe at what its creator made. Almost every person that views a piece of art wants to know who made it. We can look at the most impressive artworks of the world and know the artist from Vincent Van Gogh to Leonardo Da Vinci, but did you know that you are considered a piece of art as well?

Turn to Ephesians 2:10. What does it say that we are? How did we become this?

The translated word for workmanship, poiema, means that which has been made or the result of someone’s work. This word is also where we get our modern-day word for poem. This means that because of Christ, we are like a magnificent painting or a beautiful poem; we are His handiwork.

Every piece of art has a purpose. A photographer wants his photograph of a poverty-stricken family to motivate the viewer to serve the poor. A poet wants his poem about love to give the reader the feeling of romance. As God’s workmanship, we have a purpose as well.

According to Ephesians 2:10 what are we created for?

How are we to respond to this?

Because we are saved by Christ, we are to walk as He did. This means that we are live our lives by doing good works. This may seem confusing because we have talked about how our works don’t give us our salvation. This is still true, but as Christians our good works are evidence of our faith.

Read Matthew 5:14-16. What are we to do as light? What happens as a result?

Read Philippians 2:12-15. In verses 12-13, what are we supposed to do? Why?

In verses 14-15, what are we supposed to be? What is the result?

The Greek word for fear in this Philippians 2:12 means reverence. We are to give honor to God by our actions. As we carry out good works because of our faith, we become lights in the world; lights that point to the Lord and give Him glory. This is what it means to be Christ’s workmanship. We are works of art that when looked at, reflect the Creator that made us.

What are practical ways to live out your identity as Christ’s workmanship?

Notice in the beginning of verse 12 that Paul calls you beloved. Tomorrow we will begin studying what this means, but now, take a moment to meditate on the verses you looked at today. Ask God to help you be obedient by doing good works and ask that you will be a light in the world because of them.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the face of this company to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony...”

The opening at weddings traditionally begins, “Dearly beloved.” Why is this so? Because those that are attending the wedding are loved deeply by the bride and groom. The incredible thing about the Bible is that it is one big love story between God and man. To Him, we are His dearly beloved.

The word beloved in Greek, agapao, means to welcome, to be fond of, and to love dearly. God’s love for His people is written throughout the pages of Scripture from start to finish. One of the books of the Old Testament that describes this love is Hosea. In the book, God commands a man named Hosea to marry a promiscuous woman and to remain faithful to her even when she is repeatedly unfaithful to him. God uses this relationship as a beautiful metaphor to portray the relationship He had with Israel and the dedication to the covenant He had with them even though they constantly broke the covenant.

Turn to Hosea 2:19-20. What word do you see repeated?

I love the language used in these verses. We see God describe Himself as a faithful husband, betrothed to His people in an everlasting covenant.

In verses 21-23 God describes this covenant. Read verse 23 and note what God says about this covenant.

Turn to Romans 9:25-26. What word does Paul use in verse 25 to describe Israel?

Israel was God’s beloved bride. As a bride and a groom commit to a covenant of marriage, God promises His people time and time again He will remain true to His covenant. Turn to the following verses and write what they say about God and His covenant.

Deuteronomy 7:9

God proved His love to His beloved Israel by being committed to His unbreakable and unchangeable covenant. But in Colossians 3:12 it says that you are called beloved, just as the people of Israel were. The new covenant of Jesus’ salvation is given to those who believe in Him. We will look at this some more tomorrow, but for now meditate on what it means to you that you are God’s beloved and spend time thanking Him for His everlasting covenant with you.

God’s covenant with Israel in the Old Testament was only temporary. In Jeremiah 31, God promises a new covenant. Turn to Jeremiah 31:31-34.

This promise was to be fulfilled through Jesus Christ. God demonstrated His love for His people by being faithful to His covenant in the Old Testament and He does the same through the covenant given through Jesus.

It can be easy for us to focus on God’s love for us, but forget that we are also commanded to love others.

As God’s beloved, we are to love the Lord and love others, but this isn’t something we master in a small amount of time. We will spend our whole lives increasing in our love for God and for others. But, how do we do this?

Read 1 John 4:12-16. According to these verses, how do we know if God abides in us?

The word abide in Greek, meno, means to remain both in place and in time. In other words, if God abides in you, both He and His love will never depart from you. But for His love to flourish in you and out of you, you need to walk in love.

Read Ephesians 5:1-5. What does it mean to walk in love?

How are we not to walk?

Read 1 John 2:1-6. According to these verses, how are we to walk?

All of these verses are centered on one thing - obedience to God’s commandments. This is what it means to walk as a Christian and to walk in love. We are to walk as Christ did, by showing love to every person He encountered and being completely obedient to the Father. As God’s beloved, we must continue to walk like this every day of our lives.

Take a moment to reflect on how you’ve been walking as God’s beloved. Have you been walking in love or walking otherwise? Think of some practical ways that you can discipline yourself to continue to obey the Lord’s commands and teachings. We read that we are God’s beloved, but we can have a hard time believing this is true. It can be easy to think that we are undeserving to receive God’s love and unworthy to be given the identity as beloved. During His earthly life, Jesus time and time again showed unconditional love through to people He interacted with. Today we are going to look at a couple of stories and the implications they have for us.

Read Luke 8:40-48 and Leviticus 15:25-27.

Because of this woman’s condition, she would have been considered unclean and, therefore, an outcast in society. Seeing Jesus in the crowd, the woman took a bold step of faith and touched His clothes.

How does Jesus react?

What does this say about His character?

In this interaction, Jesus brings an outcast into the spotlight. He knew who had touched Him, but wanted to publicly acknowledge this woman’s faith and how she was healed because of it. Even more, He demonstrates how He sees her by calling her “daughter.” She is not an outcast in His eyes, but a beloved daughter, completely worthy of receiving His healing and salvation.

Have you ever felt like this woman before? What do you learn about Jesus’ interaction with this lady?

Read John 8:1-11. How did the Pharisees want Jesus to respond? What does He say instead?

In biblical times, women were treated as less significant than men. Adding on the fact that this woman was an adulteress, the Pharisees thought they would have Jesus caught in condemnation of the lady. Bringing forth this woman caught in the act of adultery would have meant that she was left exposed standing before Jesus as well. Completely humiliated, this woman must have been bracing herself for what was to come. But, in an act of mercy, Jesus flips the test on to the Pharisees by making them see their own sin. He chooses not to condemn her, but to set her free, telling her to live a life of sin no more.

What does this tell you about Jesus’ love? What truths about Christ’s character do you glean from this passage?

Two women with two different stories met one Savior that forever changed their lives. An outcast and a sinner were seen for who they were and not what they had done. The unconditional love that Jesus showed is the same love He gives us today. We are called beloved despite our struggle with sin and our feelings of unworthiness. In C.S Lewis’ book The Last Battle, a character named Emeth encounters Aslan, a lion that represents Christ. Emeth stands fearful in front of him knowing he has been serving an evil god, fully expecting to be punished. In a shocking display of grace, Aslan bends down and tells him that he is welcomed to him. As Emeth recounts this interaction, he exclaims, “and this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me beloved, me who am but as a dog.” As Aslan calls Emeth beloved knowing his sin, Christ calls you this as well. When the heaviness of shame from sin presses down, Jesus whispers to you that you are His beloved.

What has kept you from accepting the identity as God’s beloved? Will you bring this to the feet of Jesus and ask Him to help you believe this truth? Thank Him for how He loves you and ask Him to remind you of this great love when you begin to doubt your identity.

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things

we had done, but because of His mercy.

Jesus not only demonstrated God’s love with the people with whom He interacted, but also in His teachings. He often used parables that centered on a certain truth that needed to be heard and understood. Today we are going to look at a couple of parables that teach how God welcomes and pursues His beloved.

Read Luke 15:1-7. Why were the Pharisees and scribes grumbling at Jesus’ actions?

In the parable, Jesus tells of God as a shepherd. How do the shepherd’s actions show God’s pursuing love?

Read Luke 15:11-31. Why did the younger son feel unworthy when he returned to his father’s house?

What was his father’s response to him?

Why was the older brother upset at their father’s response?

This passage teaches us much about God’s love for His beloved. This father’s son decided to go his own way, but when he realized what he had done he felt ashamed to go back to his father. Instead of condemning him, his father welcomes him back with open arms and celebrates his return. In the same way, God is ready to welcome

with open arms sinners that put their trust in Him, and those who believe in Him but have strayed. The brother in the parable in Luke 15 becomes angry at his father because of his father’s response to the younger son’s return home. He is jealous that his brother has been given a celebration when he didn’t deserve it. In the same way, when a sinner turns to God we are to celebrate with Him over this great thing. God speaks to us in the same way the father spoke to his son, “You have shared in everything that I have given you because you belong to me, now it is time to celebrate that another has come to me and is sharing in it as well.”

In your own life, how have you wandered away like the lost sheep or the prodigal son?

How does the truth that God goes after those who are lost or who have strayed from Him give you hope?

How does the truth that God welcomes back and rejoices over those that come to Him show His love for you?

Take a moment to reflect on what you learned from these two parables. Thank God for His pursuing love that chases after you and welcomes you back to Him. Ask Him to give you a heart that celebrates when sinners come to Him because He has done the same for you.

We learned yesterday about God pursuing and welcoming His beloved. The metaphor of God as shepherd also means that He will always keep those He loves secure. He goes after those who are lost and brings them to Himself, and He always is keeping His beloved safe and secure.

Read John 10:1-18. What does it mean that Jesus is the Gate (or the Door)?

What does it mean that Jesus is the Good Shepherd?

How does Jesus demonstrate His love in verses 14-18?

The Bible often uses sheep and shepherds as examples. Sheep are not the brightest animals, which means they constantly need a shepherd to guide them. They can be stubborn and insist on their own way and will try to go their own way until the shepherd steps in and brings them back to course.

How have you acted like a sheep in your actions toward God?

This passage perfectly portrays Christ’s love for His beloved. The text says that He calls us by name as He leads us and we follow His voice because we recognize that we belong to Him. He keeps us safe from the enemy who wants to lead us to death and He gives us life instead. As sheep know their shepherd and their shepherd knows his sheep, so does God know each one of His beloved and they know Him as well.

Another beautiful thing about this passage is what it says to sinners. In John 10:16 Jesus says, “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to My voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” This means that Jesus always wants more to come to Him and join His flock.

What promises from this passage resonate with you? How can you remind yourself of these promises daily?

Take a moment to meditate on these verses and their meaning for us. If you find yourself as the sheep that belongs to God, thank Him for His love as the Good Shepherd and how He keeps you safe. If you find yourself as the sheep that is outside the flock, would you consider joining it? The Good Shepherd is waiting with open arms to welcome you into His eternal family.

Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders.

In the Chosen part of this study, we looked at how nothing can take us away from God’s family. The implications of this can be carried into our identity as beloved, because the love God has for us is not only unconditional, but it is also everlasting. This means it can never be taken away from us.

Turn back to Romans 8:35-39 and meditate on the verses.

In times when you feel as though God’s love has left you, how can the truth in these verses remind you that it hasn’t?

As humans, we can find our hearts preoccupied with distractions instead of the Lord. Our hearts can be fickle and our thoughts and emotions change constantly. In C.S Lewis’ book Mere Christianity he writes, “The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go God’s love for us does not.” The beautiful thing about

our relationship with the Lord is that He loves us even when we fail to love Him as we should. In Malachi 3:6 God declares He does not change. This means that God does not change in any way and neither does His love for us or His thoughts about us. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” No, God does not change His mind. This quality of God not changing is called immutability.

Why is it important for us to understand that God is immutable? How does His immutability affect how we view His love for us?

Spend some time in prayer thanking God for His constant, never changing love for you. Ask Him to remind you of this love when you feel as if it has left you and ask Him to help you walk confidently in His love for you when circumstances or people make you feel otherwise.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

God’s love for His beloved is unconditional and everlasting. His love does not depend on who we are or what we have done, and it promises to remain steady in every situation and circumstance. This means that in the joyous moments in life and in the desolate times, His love for us does not change. As Christians, God doesn’t promise us that we will never experience trials and suffering. In fact, we are meant to experience suffering. In Romans 8:17 we read how as God’s children we are considered heirs. But, there is something more to this.

Turn to Romans 8:17. What does Paul say in the second part of the verse?

This topic of suffering can be really hard for a believer to understand. Some may ask, “How can a loving God allow there to be suffering?” Or “How can He allow me to suffer?” There isn’t enough space in this day to explain in detail what scripture says about suffering. What is important for now is to understand that God doesn’t allow suffering as a way to punish His beloved, but to change His beloved.

Turn to the following verses and write what they say about suffering.

We see in the verses above that suffering shapes us. It forms us into a person that has endurance, hope, and steadfastness, but it also forms us more into the image of Christ Himself. Each suffering we experience changes us more and more to look like Jesus and causes us to grow deeper in our relationship with Him. Some of our greatest growth as Christians will occur because of suffering.

While some earthly parents cause their children to suffer out of cruelty, parents that love their children dearly allow them to experience suffering in order for them to learn. For example, a mother warns her children not to touch the hot stove, but when the mother looks away the child touches it and burns their hand. The mother didn’t want her child to suffer in this way, but knows now that the child won’t make that mistake again because of this. In the same way, our Heavenly Father lovingly allows sufferings to occur so that we will learn and be changed by them.

Because of His love for us, God doesn’t leave us alone in our suffering.

Turn to 1 Peter 5:10. What does God promise?

Turn to 2 Corinthians 1:1-5. According to these verses, what do we receive?

We learned in the Holy part of this study that Christ acts as our Great High Priest. Hebrews 4:15 says that “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are yet without sin.” Jesus not only comforts us in suffering, but sympathizes with us because like us He experienced temptation and suffering on earth. In fact, He experienced the greatest suffering of all by dying on the Cross. In his book Reason for God, Tim Keller writes, “He had to pay for our sins so that someday He can end evil and suffering without ending us.” Jesus suffered immense pain on the Cross so that He could conquer death once and for all, and allow those that believe in Him to one day enter a place where suffering will be no more. Revelation 21:4 says that God will “wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

How do the verses you read today bring you comfort? How can they help you the next time you experience suffering?

Take a moment to meditate on these verses and what you have learned today. Thank God that He is with you in your suffering and is making you more like Christ because of it. Ask Him for endurance during trials in your life and to remain in the hope that one day you will never experience suffering again.

Throughout this study we have seen God’s plan of bringing His people back to Himself. We are His holy, chosen, and beloved people. This plan started with Creation, was sustained even through the Fall and was made known through redemption by Christ. But, it isn’t finished just yet. God’s plan for His people ends with restoration.

This means a full circle back to how Creation was designed. The holiness that Adam and Eve had that was marred by sin will be entirely restored and the dwelling of God with His people will be complete.

Turn to the following passages and write what is promised to believers.

Philippians 3:20-21

Romans 8:21-23

1 John 3:2

This process of change is called glorification. Glorification means the final removal of sin. Our bodies will be transformed to be like the body of Christ, completely and fully holy. This also means that you will finally be able to stand in the presence of the Holy One. Your sin will no longer separate you from entering into His presence. For the rest of eternity, you will be able to dwell with your Heavenly Father.

Turn to Revelation 21:1-7 and Revelation 22:1-5. What do these passages say will happen?

On the first day of this study we read Isaiah 6:3. Turn back there and read the verse again, and then turn to Revelation 4:8.

If you believe in Jesus the eternity described is the eternity that you will share. We have discussed that being chosen gives you the identity of a child of God. One day you will be able to experience fully what it means to enter into God’s family. God says in Revelation 21:7 that He will be our God and we will be His children, forever.

Romans 8:24-25 says that this promise gives us hope while we are on earth. We wait eagerly to be united with God and be transformed. To this we say, “Maranatha,” which means,“Come, Lord Jesus.”

Spend some time reflecting on these passages. Ask the Lord to remind you of this eternity with Him and that it will give you hope when you struggle in your days here on earth. Thank Him that in Him you are forever holy, chosen, and beloved.

When the enemy tells you that you are without purpose and forgotten remember He calls you chosen. When the enemy tells you that you are unlovable and unworthy remember He calls you beloved. The next page lists out everything you have learned about who you are in Christ Jesus. I encourage you to write your name in the blank and declare these truths over yourself every day.

2019 BIBLE READING PLAN AND CHALLENGE

The 19th Century Scottish minister, Robert Murray M’Cheyne, (sometimes spelled McCheyne) who lived from 1813-1843, prepared a plan for Bible reading to take readers through the New Testament and Psalms twice a year, and through the rest of the Bible once each year. There are approximately 4 chapters per day in this plan.

Originally MCheyne listed two columns labeled “Family” and two labeled “Secret.” He intended that the Scripture listings in the “Family” columns be read in family devotions, and those in “Secret” columns be read privately, in personal devotions.
