The annual ACRE (Action Committee for Rural Electrification)/ECHO (Electric Cooperative Help Organization) celebration was held September 29 in the AEC community room. Dignitaries from our nine-county service area attended, as well as employees and their families.

I always think of the co-op as a big family, coming together to support each other and our communities.

Like all families, we have gatherings. In September, we gathered for the annual ECHO celebration to thank AEC supporters and recognize employees for supporting ACRE. Last month, we gathered for the Day of Giving to learn about our United Way campaign and unveil our future goal. We met again for the Fall Festival to spend time with our families and each other outside of work.

Our ability to come together as a family allowed us to reach our $50,000 United Way goal and contribute to aiding flood victims in South Carolina.

We have a lot to be thankful for this season, and I am thankful to have my co-op family.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

This year’s festival included BBQ, hayrides, pumpkin carving, raffles, a movie, inflatables and s’mores.

The kids’ favorite attractions were the inflatable slide and bounce house.

Below, David Shumpert snaps a picture of Brittany Shumpert and their son, Carter holding his great pumpkin.

Emily and Jordan, granddaughters of Bobbie Cook, enjoy the hayride back to the festival after picking the perfect pumpkins for carving.

Gary Stooksbury and wife, Kathy Stooksbury enjoy the movie showing next to the fire.

Colton Truitt, grandson of Lyn Day, looked for a pumpkin that was small enough for him to pick up in the patch!

This year’s theme was “It’s the Great Festival.” Charlie Brown decorations were found thoughout the event, as well as a showing of the movie It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

AEC donates tools to local schools

Right, Ellen Luton from UW admires the details put into the Engineering Department’s display.

Kyle Simmons, Eric Savage, Warren Smith and Matthew Glover load school supplies for one of the area schools.

Cathy Ellis, Principal of JD Lever Elementary School, and Dominique Dunbar load bags of supplies into Cathy’s vehicle. More than 40 schools visited the co-op to collect their supplies on August 12.

Left, the distribution helpers take a break for a picture. L to R: Leroy Evans, James Corder, Clayton Baughman, Sid Bellamy, Matt Glover Glenn Edwards, Kyle Simmons, Kenny Brown and Eric Savage.

Six thousand is a big number, and if you give 6,000 of something, it’s huge! This year, AEC did just that. AEC employees collected 6,327 school supplies for United Way of Aiken County’s School Tools program. Nearly every department exceeded their collection goal, and made out-of-the-box displays that wowed the United Way judges.

United Way started the School Tools drive in 2001. This is AEC’s tenth year being the supply housing and distribution location. AEC employees helped with every part of the process, from collection to distribution.

Sharon Rodgers, President of United Way, was overwhelmed by AEC’s support. “I’d like to say a special thank you to the folks at Aiken Electric Cooperative for making this possible every year,” she said. “We’re given warehouse space, use of the Community Room and help to make sure the school supplies get distributed.”

School Tools brought in 34,000 items this year, with almost 20% coming from AEC’s internal drive. The supplies will be distributed to students in Aiken County schools who are in need.

September marks the end of the summer and the beginning of my favorite time of the year. Fall and football season are just around the corner.

This season reminds me how the cooperative cannot function without each individual employee. A quarterback cannot carry the entire team by himself, and a single leaf cannot create the colorful autumn trees. In that same way, each AEC employee works together in order for us to be successful in all endeavours.

For some of those endeavors, AEC must also work together with the entire community. The United Way campaign kicked-off in late August, so now it’s time to dedicate our efforts to giving back. Many events take place in fall to benefit our UW campaign, so don’t forget to keep your calender updated.

This is the season for teamwork and cooperation. Have a great rest of the summer, and get ready for football!

Congratulations! Trustee, Theo Williams celebrated 50 years of being on AEC’s Board September 16. Williams and wife, Elaine, are pictured above with his cake.

Left, AEC Board of Trustees Vice President, Robert Curry and wife, Veronica, enjoy the Membership Committee meeting.

I am grateful that we were able to celebrate the anniversary of Trustee, Theo Williams and his service to AEC.

For 50 years, Williams has served on AEC’s Board of Trustees. He began as a temporary fill-in after the retirement of Mr. Claude Lyons in 1965, then was voted to a full-term position.

Since his induction Williams has served in all leadership positions on the Board during his tenure.

His dedication to making sure that we are always able to provide exceptional service with competitive rates to our members is inspiring. He has aided the cooperative in making positive changes for our co-op and the community.

I look forward to all of the great things to come.

Here’s to many more years of great service!

Employees, retirees and trustees submit information and photos used for Watts On Line. Publication is created in-house including editorial planning, writing, photography, layout, design and distribution. Seamless coordination isrequired from our IT department to post the pdf for viewing and Human Resources to keep anniversary and birthdayinformation current. A template is created each month with a themed banner and publication link for the reader. Thereader can then download the file if desired. Interactive links are sometimes used to connect reader to additionalstory information and/or photo galleries. File is tested on Mac and PC platforms, as well as tablet and phone deviceseach month before sending.Initiative has helped to keep home email lists for retirees, employees and several external databases current. Beforecreating WATTS On Line, there were no databases with employees', trustees' and retirees' home emails. Publicationalso used as a training opportunity for the Marketing Intern. During the first few months of the year, the Intern istrained in each facet of online publication production from writing and editing to photography and design. They arethen trained in electronic exporting and print distribution. Publication is turned over to the intern for productiononce he or she has mastered the necessary skills.
