Experience Matters in Senior Care

Sustainable Long-Term Care Conference

“Embrace Your Life, Engage Your Community” was the theme of On Lok’s 8th annual Sustainable Long-Term Care Conference on Thursday, October 8, at UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center. The speakers at the conference covered a broad spectrum of topics surrounding senior health, exploring emerging technologies including 3-D printing and smart homes for seniors; the latest scientific research such as the use of Vitamin D for cardiovascular health; and holistic healing through dance and spirituality. Every year, the Conference brings together practitioners, researchers, administrators, educators, caregivers, students and other professionals engaged in advancing elder care. It is the only

space of its kind that creates learning and networking opportunities in the field of long-term care.

Keynote Speaker Gordon Lithgow, Ph.D., presented on the prevention of chronic disease. Dr. Lithgow is the director of interdisciplinary research at the renowned Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, CA. His internationally recognized research is focused on the fundamental mechanisms of aging and using biology to prevent chronic disease. The Lithgow Lab has made seminal discoveries in the use of pharmacological agents to intervene

in aging processes, such as compounds that suppress pathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

On Lok recently launched a new venture/program, Alcara, to expand the footprint of the On Lok family of senior services and to redefine old notions of how we age in place. Leveraging On Lok’s experience in the senior care space, Alcara provides a comprehensive program of services that allow an individual to live independently and remain at home. Unlike On Lok Lifeways, Alcara is not a center-based program – it delivers these services in the customer’s home and is targeted to the private pay market.

In the spirit of On Lok, what makes Alcara unique from other providers is the caring staff who are credentialed experts in the field of gerontology and nursing and are advocates for the well-being of each client. Our service provides peace of mind to family members through a dedicated care coordinator who creates an individualized care plan for each client, providing a range of services from home healthcare to home care. In addition, Alcara care coordinators work with local service providers to assist with such things as bill paying and home safety modification if needed. Our staff

Expanding the Footprint of Senior Servicesutilizes a point of care technology that provides caregivers frequent updates about the delivery of scheduled services and can be accessed on any web browser anywhere at any time. Our goal is to become a community resource for all services and products that assist seniors with independent living. Alcara is located in Los Altos and currently serves participants in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, with long range plans to eventually service the entire Bay Area. He connects with our participants easily and helps our staff with so many assignments. Matthew is always ready to help with any job. For example, he helped our staff with cleaning and washing wheel chairs. He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to computers and is always ready to support the Activity Team with any technical issues. Thank you, Matthew, for your volunteer service!

MARY CHANMary Chan is a retired Rose Team Activity Leader and has been volunteering with On Lok for two years now. Mary comes to the Rose Center once a week to help with group activities, special projects and individual interactions with our seniors. She is personable and our seniors are happy to see her when she comes to the center. Thank you, Mary, for your volunteer service!

30th Street Senior Center Staff Receives the Legacy Scholarship and a Matching Grant for the Center!Congratulations to Orlando Sanchez for receiving a special scholarship from the Legacy Employee Resource Group at the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The Legacy Scholarship is designed for people who continue higher education and want to work with seniors. Orlando is Interim Geriatric Support Services Manager at the Center.
