“Men of Honor”

It seems like only yesterday, his eyes were lit with joy,As we watched with admiration, this uniformed little boy.Camp outs, picnics, Pine wood cars, the years slipped quickly by,The colors changed from blue to green, in the twinkling of an eye.

Soon came ranks of Tenderfoot, Second, First, and Star. Each leading towards that fi nal request, once visioned from afar. And then the rank of Life, and as life can often do.The goal so close within his grasp, was dimming from his view.Yet from within he found the strength to reach that fi nal quest,Remembering words from years gone by:I WILL DO MY BEST.

It seems like only yesterday, his eyes were lit with joy,As we watched with admiration, this uniformed little boy.Now with an eagle upon his chest, he soars, where once he ran, No longer that uniformed little boy;our Son...and Eagle...A Man.

Jason Dail Irwin, 18, was born in Lubbock, Texas on August 16, 1995. He is the son of Patrick and Darlene Irwin and grandson of Sherman and Audeen Irwin of Lubbock and Franklin and Josetta Heinrich of Slaton. He has an older sister, Katherine (25), an older brother Jacob (23), and a nephew Jaxon (4). His father, Patrick and brother Jacob both achieved the Eagle Scout rank in Troop 157.

Jason started school at Parsons Elementary and developed a great appreciation for music and Texas history. He went on to Evans Middle school where he played football and played the baritone in the band for 3 years. He attended Monterey High School, and participated in football all four years, was a member of National Honor Society and earned 4.0 honor roll all four years. He enjoyed history, calculus and physics. Jason graduated with honors in June of 2013. He is currently a freshman at Texas Tech University and is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Jason attends Holy Spirit Catholic church. He currently serves as a Eucharistic Minister and was an alter server for six years. He has been involved with the youth group at Holy Spirit for the last four years. He has helped with the annual sausage festival, Vacation bible school and the Halloween Happening.

Jason began his journey to Eagle Scout as a Tiger Cub with Pack 140. He enjoyed earning belt loops, and pinewood derby racing. He achieved his Arrow of Light in May of 2005 and joined Troop 157 so he could attend his fi rst summer camp along with his brother. Jason has attended summer camp

almost every year since he joined. Jason has held various leadership positions, participated in service projects and has gone on many camping and spring break trips. He is also a member of the Nakona Lodge Order of the Arrow. In the summer of 2012, he trekked to Philmont with his dad and several other members and leaders from the troop. Jason served as the trek leader for the 14 day journey.

Jason’s eagle project was for the Sisters of the Lord’s Table. Several of the sisters, who are from the Philippines, attend and work at Holy Spirit, where Jason met them during youth group. He designed a grotto and prayer area in the backyard at their home. He and his fellow scouts cleared dirt and transplanted a tree, created a form for the foundation, poured concrete into the form for a slab and planted various fl owering plants and shrub around the slab. He placed pavers and the grotto on top of the slab. Jason, his dad and brother constructed the grotto from wood.

Jason and his family would like to thank all the leaders and volunteers in Troop 157, who have helped him in his journey to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. These people, through their commitment, leadership and guidance have shown Jason how to strive to become a man of honor. He would also like to thank all his family and friends who gave their love, encouragement, fi nancial aid, letters and prayers to help complete his Eagle Project.

Matthew John Levine, 16, is the son of Teresa Zaisser Levine and Dr. Marc Joseph Levine of Lubbock, Texas. He is the younger brother of Max Zaisser Levine (19), a sophomore at Villanova University. Matthew and his brother are very tight, sharing their love of music, music making, tennis, ping pong rivalries, boating and beaching, hiking and hanging with their beloved dogs. Matthew’s grandparents are Carmelita Zaisser (deceased) and Carl Zaisser (deceased) and the Honorable Beryl J. Levine and Dr. Leonard Levine of Palo Alto, CA.

Matthew was born on July 30, 1997 at Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas. Matthew began his education at Texas Tech Child Development Research Center pre-school, where he played and developed from ages 1-4. He attended All Saints Episcopal School from K through 8th grade and graduated in 2011. At All Saints, in addition to the regular curriculum, Matthew studied Spanish, Latin, Algebra 1 and Comparative Religion. He participated in daily chapel including Bible readings, and he gave his own musical offerings on viola and guitar. He contributed service hours to various community organizations, including Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Women’s Protective Services and Adult Day Care Center. He played team basketball and tennis for All Saints during middle school. In 8th grade, Matthew had a lead role in a theater production under the direction of Ms. Wendy Needham called, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, a emotionally gripping play about young friends coming of age as victims of the Holocaust. The play was awarded 1st in District, and 2nd in State competition. For his performance, Matthew won Best Male actor at the State competition.

Matthew started Lubbock High School as a freshman, taking all AP classes. He is currently a junior in the academically demanding International Baccalaureate program. Matthew made the Varsity Tennis Team as a freshman and has played Varsity each year. As a sophomore, his team won first place in the 4A District and in the spring 2013, Matthew and his doubles partner, Collin Couch, won first place in the 4A District; they went on to compete in the Regional tournament. Outside of school, Matthew has competed for many years in the United States Tennis Association competitions, Texas Section, earning 12-year-old Superchamp, and 14 & 16 year-old Champ status.

Matthew has loved being involved with music throughout his education. He played viola in the All Saints Orchestra for 2 years under the direction of Ms. Judy Woody. He studied piano independently for several years with Ms. Joy Moutos. Matthew has studied guitar with Mr. Chad Russell, owner of Don’t Fret Guitar Studio, for the past 5 years. Matthew performs in Chad’s annual guitar jam and each year adapts a musical selection, which he polishes to performance quality. In middle school years, Matthew contributed “musical offerings” in chapel services. He plays guitar on Sunday morning at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Lubbock, where he currently attends services.

Matthew has no prior immediate family in scouting; he has “learned as you go” from fellow troop mates and adult scouters. Matthew began scouting in 8th grade with Troop 157 when he happily accompanied some friends to a scout meeting with the hope of doing some hiking and outdoor camping. He became increasingly involved in the program, pursued merit badge learning, camping experience and leadership opportunities in the troop including Quartermaster, Scribe and Patrol leader. He has attended summer camp every summer since joining and also was invited and did serve as a counselor in training (CIT) with Mr. Christopher Ross at Camp Tres Ritos, NM. Matthew traded his former summer camp experiences at Camp Longhorn and Newks Tennis Ranch, both in the Texas Hill Country, to pursue the learning and fun-filled weeks with the Troop 157 summer camp in “cool, comfortable Ardmore, Oklahoma.” Matthew earned the Lifesaving American Red Cross certificate last spring through the LISD program and went on to achieve the Lifesaving MB during 2013 summer camp. He feels it is important to provide first aid and to be able to rescue others, especially around water. He looks forward to the possibility of getting a lifeguarding job, perhaps one summer on the beaches of cape cod, where he convenes every summer with his extended family. In addition to the outdoor skills learned from various Merit Badge pursuits, Matthew particularly enjoyed pursuing the Cooking MB this past summer.

Matthew’s designed and executed his xeriscape landscaping Eagle Service Project for the benefit of Oakwood United Methodist Church, Lubbock, TX. This is where the Troop 157 has met for regular, Monday meetings for several years. Matthew decided a gardening facelift for the site’s south entrance would be an excellent way to pay back the church for their generosity in allowing his troop to use its facility. The site now offers a tidy, attractive and more inviting entrance with groundcover, paved edges and potted plants. This xeriscape treatment is drought and debris resistant and is uniquely suited to Lubbock’s hot, dry, windy climate. Matthew was honored to have a few church members share their ideas for their grounds with him as well as receive the able advice of Troop 157 consultants, including Mr. Payne and Mr. Scarborough. Matthew wishes to thank the many friends who assisted him in his project who numbered 14 on day one and 20 on day two. Scouts from Troop 157, old friends Pedro & Dylan, Lubbock High friends, tennis teammates and a beloved Lubbock High teacher, Vikki Rhodes, all helped & supported him. In total, Matthew’s hard work in preparation and his many volunteers contributed 245 man-hours. The event required his organizational skills and leadership.

Matthew wishes to thank the many adult leaders of the Troop 157 for their encouragement, time, good humor, and guidance, which contributed greatly to his learning & development along his path to becoming an Eagle Scout. Mr. Brad Payne, Mr. Terry Sparks, Dr. Phy, Dr. Ragain, Dr. Walter, Mr. Chapman, Dr. Hancock, Mr. Scioli and many more all helped Matthew achieve his goal. Matthew would especially like to thank his family for their love, encouragement and support and, as always, his buddies in and outside the troop for their loyalty and friendship through this journey. Thanks to you all!
