The three guys dubbed “pa-permakers” were Luis Henao, Jim Thompson and Chuck Swann. Henao is an executive of Pratt Industries, current-ly on sabbatical. Thompson is president and CEO of Pa-peritalo Publications. Swann is senior editor of Paperitalo Publications. Our group’s mis-sion was to help build a small house for a family of poor—very poor—people of Mayan Indian descent.

Bad Projects start with Bad Budgets
Over the years, we have no doubt said this before, but we can certainlysay it again.
Bad budgets have primarily two sources of origin. The first is a poorestimate. Things were missed, not priced correctly, not scopedcorrectly and on and on. This is just sloppy work on the part of theproject manager and the engineer.
Back when there was serious inflation (and it will return), budgets weremissed because they were old and inflation was not properly taken intoconsideration. Simply put, prices went up before the budget wasimplemented. This will happen again someday and the projectmanagers then will have a problem, simply because they were notaware of this phenomenon. Those of us who lived through the 1980sknew this problem all too well.
The main problem in creating bad budgets, however, is CEOs andboards of directors. They simply can't believe that things cost as muchas they do and refuse to authorize a budget that recognizes the true costof projects. So, they authorize a budget they believe to be correct (Ihave always wanted to ask them where they got their information) andignore the one supplied by experienced professionals.
At this point, all you can do is beat the heck out of all the suppliers inorder to attempt to get within budget or descope the project and hope noone notices.
If you are a project manager and you see a bad budget thrown at you, Isuggest you hoist up your asbestos underwear and do battle up front.Might as well get fired at the beginning of the project than wait until theend.
Otherwise, you are going to be operating in a fantasy world as you keep

20 Jul 16: I found really light
weight!
One of the companies I work for,
Paperitalo Publications LLC, had an
opportunity recently to pick up the
sponsorship of a track car, a 2016 Corvette Z06,
owned and driven by professional race car driver,
Jim Painter, the retired mill manager of the
containerboard mill at Cowpens, South Carolina.
Jim has been racing professionally for 56 years.
Jim invited me to come to Pontiac, Michigan this
past weekend for a training event hosted by Katech,
a builder of performance racing engines. Jim even
arranged to take me out on the brand new course
for a few laps on both Friday and Saturday. I loved
it, but my stomach did not, which was very
frustrating.
However, we got to tour the Katech factory Friday
evening, and this is where LGMI kicked in for me.
These folks are always trying to shave ounces off
engine parts. It was eye-opening as to what
lengths they will go to get rid of an ounce.
Then, on Sunday, while still sitting around at the
track, Jim was telling me about a car wax called
Rejex, which adds 2 mph to a race car's speed.
This, along with the entire experience, left me feeling
like we are just playing around.
As I left the course, driving to Kalamazoo, Michigan,
for a day of work on Monday, I started thinking
about normal automobile driving, about what I had
heard over the weekend about racing and about
LGMI. I was also thinking about a few weeks ago
when in one of these columns we were talking about
capacity and how it should fit into our LGMI
principles.

Another advertising client was featured in a major pulp & paper company's internal newsletter after that company had read and heard about our client in Paperitalo Publications and on Pulp & Paper Radio International.
Hello Helen,
Thank you for the books and letter again this year. They will be given to our seniors at the Academic Advisory meeting luncheon on May 19th.

We penetrate the future of the industry by reaching out to current students and graduating seniors. Every student graduating from a US pulp and paper school leaves with our book, “The Lazy Project Engineer’s Path to Excellence,” which has in it quick and easy links to our online media offerings.
Helen - the books were VERY well received! I actually gave them out at our April - Senior Banquet - this banquet covers May and December grads - so they already have them.
We would happily take you up on offers again this upcoming spring for our next senior banquet for May and Dec 2016 grads.
Thanks!

In the past three years we have personally influenced: • One company to make a major purchase with one of our advertisers.• Helped an advertiser repair a difficult relationship with a mill.• Linked a mill with an advertiser that would have not been linked any other way.• Directed business to another one of our advertisers.• Encouraged one mill to send inquiries to one of our advertisers.
A procurement manager from a major producer reached out to us for our referrals for suppliers that did specific repair work. This procurement manager receives and reads Helen's Newsletter, our electronic supplier directory.
