YOUTH CLUB IN SALTFORDFollowing the ending of the youth bus in Saltford on a Tuesday evening, the SCA is looking to set up a Youth Club at Saltford Hall on a Friday evening.

However, in order to do this we need to recruit a suitably qualified Lead Youth Worker. This will be a paid post at 4 hours per week.

If you are interested or know someone who is interested, then please email [email protected] with your details and we will get back with a full Job Description. Alternatively ring 01225 874081 and leave your details for someone to get back to you.

Once we have a suitably qualified person in place we will be looking for volunteers to work with this person to get this exciting project off the ground for the benefit of our local youngsters.

and in that time had held the posts of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. In recognition of his services, he was made an Honorary Member in 2008. Our sympathies go out to his wife, Dot and to his family.

The Annual General Meeting was the main feature of our February Meeting. The Officers and Com-mittee of the Wine Circle were returned without opposition, for another year. They are: President - Percy Mellor, Chairman - Alan Dummott, Secretary and Vice Chairman - Peter Church, Treasurer - An-gie Dummott, Wine Secretary - Rosemary Turner, Social Secretary - Tessa Lesser, Raffles - David Hallett, Refreshments - Sheila Whittle,

The evening was rounded off with a delicious American Supper provided by the Members.

In March, Percy Mellor gave us a tutored tasting of commercial wines from some of the countries he had visited on his travels. He had purchased these from Lidls “Wine Cellar “ collection. We tasted two white wines, one rose, two reds and one sweet wine. The selection was excellent and gave us a variety of tastes and bouquets.

We also welcomed three new members to the Wine Circle.

In April, Andy Fussel, a local farmer, will talk to us about his enterprise - Fussels “Liquid Gold” i.e. rape seed oil. Nailsea Wine Circle will also be holding a Spring Dance.

In May Percy Mellor will return to give us a tast-ing of homemade wines from which one will be selected for members to make for the Members’ Recipe Competition in December.Information is now available on the Wine Circle’s website by entering google.co.uk and inputting keynsham and saltford wine circleIf you would like more details regarding the Wine Circle, please contact Alan Dummott on 01225 873493.

AFFLIATED ORGANISATIONS

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD PROBUS CLUB

Clive Brain of Saltford, former coxwain of Bristol’s historic fire boat Pyronaut, gave members of Keyn-sham and Saltford Probus Club more than they expected when he spoke at their January meeting.

He not only told them about the Pyronaut and other distinguished vessels now under the umbrella of the M Shed museum - he showed video of partici-pation in the Queen’s diamond jubilee 1,000 boat pageant on the Thames in 2012.

Then, because interest seemed so great, he offered to arrange tours of the boats in Bristol har-bour. When the retired professional and business men met again in February they were told that a visit had been arranged for May 12.

So on that day members will board the Pyronaut and see at close hand her water cannons shoot spectacularly in the air. They’ll also see over the steam tug Mayflower - the oldest Bristol-built ship afloat and probably the oldest surviving tug in the world - and the diesel tug John King, a steel-hulled tug also built in Bristol.

There will be a guided tour of the various dockside cranes and control cabin views over the harbour.

Five days later, on 17 May, two Probus groups will be not far from the harbour, examining the valu-able archive work of Bristol Record Office.

In the meantime - on 12 April - the club has an all-day outing booked to Hampton Court Palace.

Associate member Frederick Alexander Allen, known to all as Jim, died on 5 March, ten days after his 97th birthday. He was president of the club in 1991-92.

Why not boost Saltford’s representation in the club? If you’re a retired professional or business man contact membership secretary Owen Cole, tel 0117 986 4312.

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLE

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Rex Kay passed away on the 9th of March. He was a valued member of the Circle having spent a total of thirteen years on the Committee

K&S LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society con-cludes its winter season of talks in April with an evening entitled “Slavery and the Country Houses of the West Country”. The date is Monday 18th April and the meeting starts at 7.30pm at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall, Bristol Road, Keynsham. Visitors are welcome.

April also sees the start of our summer programme of walks and visits to places of historical inter-est, with a visit to the ancient hill-top town of Malmesbury. You need to join the Society to go on these visits, although spare places on coach trips (planned for Kingston Lacey and the Black Country Living Museum) will be available to non-members.

SALTFORD AFTERNOON WI

The first meeting of the New Year gave us op-portunity to catch up with our colleagues after Christmas and also welcome 3 new members. We

were entertained by John Selby who gave a talk on the Code Breakers of Bletchley Park. Mr Selby had actually worked at Bletchley Park and could give the inside story of his time there. The meeting closed with a raffle, tea, biscuits and a chat.

Our meeting in February fuelled our interest in chocolate with a visit from the owner of Zara’s Chocolates. Zara gave a talk on the history of chocolate while we were given samples of the very different types and flavours. We also had the opportunity to buy her originally designed products.

As usual our March meeting was a meal to celebrate the Saltford Afternoon WI anniversary. This year was our 4th and we met at Saltford Golf Club for a very enjoyable meal with chat, a quiz and a raffle.

Other local activities enjoyed by our members in the first part of the year were Ten Pin Bowling, lunchtime meals, a walk around Clifton and trips to the cinema. Later in the year we are planning coach trips to the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Winchester and visits to the BBC in Bristol, Dents in Warminster, Waitrose (behind the scenes) and Tyntsfield.

LIONS CLUB OF KEYNSHAM

After the Christmas and New Year rush, activities are proceeding at a more normal pace.

On 26 February, the Lions held their annual quiz and supper at Saltford Hall. This was very well attended and raised approx £800 for local causes.

During recent weeks donations have been made to: RUH Maternity Fund - Parkinsons UK - Golden Oldies group transport - A weeks holiday for a family at Ilfracombe Lions Holiday Home.

Currently there are a number of giant Easter Eggs around at various locations, where participants, for a £1 donation, can have a 1/100 chance of win-ning the egg in the forthcoming draws.

We have recently been donated curtain/upholstery material to sell for additional funds. Originally from John Lewis/Gardiner Haskins they vary in length from 3.5-8 metres and 130/140 wide – some smaller pieces also available.

After many years meeting at Fry Club and subse-quently Somerdale Pavilion, KLC now have their regular meetings at Keynsham Rugby Club.

If you would like to know more about Keynsham Lions activities, please visit www.keynsham-lions.org.uk or telephone 0117 9609446

SALTFORD EVENING W.I.

At our March meeting, the speaker we were led to believe, played the Ukulele so we all sat back prepared to join in with sort of George Formby songs ie ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’ etc. (Of course we vaguely knew this from our grand-parents). Then came the lovely surprise. This very talented lady read out comical poems/verses she had written herself and she didn’t stint on her per-formance. We had poems on many subjects and everyone was a delight bringing much laughter to all present. Finally the finale was read with the Ukulele ‘sort of’ in the background so we did get a taste of it, but it was her talent as a poet that was enjoyed. P.A. had better watch out.

There is an interesting walk across the Downs on Friday and a few trips arranged for later on in the year including a coach trip to a Silk Mill and then Winchester in the afternoon.

The usual activities ie Coffee morning, Book Club and Discussion Group are also taking place as detailed on our news sheet.

FRIENDS OF SALTFORD LIBRARY

Friday 8 April “Pyronaut and the Queen’s Dia-mond Jubilee Pageant” A digital slide show by Clive Brain of Saltford who was formerly coxswain of the Bristol Fire Boat. Clive is now a volunteer

and takes visitors around the Harbour on Pyronaut which was one of the 1,000 ships in the flotilla at the Pageant on 3 June, 2012. There are only 20 seats in the Library. To book one contact Cynthia Wilson 01225 874259

The Friends have provided new blinds to keep out the sun when we have our slide shows.

Friday 6 May “Publishing Saltford’s History On-line”. This will be shown on the PC in the Library by Phil Hardy. It is Saltford’s popular history project. Masses of information, photographs and history, the background to the project, and how it is developing.

We commend the 18 volunteers who are getting through their training to become volunteer librar-ians in Saltford on a Saturday morning 9.30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Do pop in and have a browse. There have been two very wet Saturdays, at the first one we had eight children to hear “The Gruffalo” read and make masks, and three parents joined the Library. At the second one we were able to provide some valuable help to someone who came in to use the computer and the printer.

BRISTOL EMPIRE DRAGONS

5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE UP DRAGON BOATING

1. It’s the ULTIMATE team sport

No other sport in the world requires 20 people to paddle at the same time across the same distance of water in perfect unison. Also, the social scene after the races is great fun!

2. You get a FULL body workout

An average one hour training session can burn anywhere between 500-800 calories. Many people automatically think this in an arm sport – it really isn’t because you work everything – back, shoulders, lats, legs and core. The boat weighs the equivalent of a polar bear and with 20 paddlers inside the boat, close to 2 tonnes. Its unlike any sport you will have ever done, but you shouldn’t be put off after your first go – it will feel strange and your muscles that you didn’t even know you had will ache!

3. Its an ancient Chinese sport with deep traditions

In ancient China the dragon boat was used for religious purposes as a way of appeasing the rain gods. Later, Qu Yuan, the great warrior poet, committed suicide in the river Mi Lo, as a protest against the political corruption of the day. To commemorate this sacrifice the people began to organise dragon boat races in his memory. Since that time (over 2000 years ago) dragon boat rac-ing has become a major part of Chinese culture, representing patriotism and group integrity. The

modern day sport of dragon boat racing began in Hong Kong in 1976.

4. It’s a great way to make friends

Clubs generally have anywhere between 25-80 members so it’s an easy way to mix quickly with many nationalities and professions.

5. The sport is HUGE!

There are many ways to get involved in this sport, there is a club right on your doorstep regularly compete in national races and train twice a week on Thursday evenings at 6.30 and 9am Sunday mornings. The sport of dragon boating is loved around the world by many!

Bristol Empire Dragons are hosting their first race event since 2010 in Bristol Harbour on 17th April this year from 9am – 4pm why not come along and take a look. You are also welcome to join us for a training session at the Saltford Rowing Centre.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KEYNSHAM

Horse Race Night

Participation is the name of the game! As previ-ously advertised, our Race Night is being held on Saturday 9th April 2016 at the Fear Hall, Keynsham and all are welcome to come and join in. OurPresi-dent’s special charity this year is “BANES Young Carer’s Centre” which will benefit from this event. The tickets are only £8 which includes a fish and chip supper and racegoers are invited to bring their own drinks. Why not make up a syndicate to “own and ride” your team horse and have a flutter on the tote. Tickets are limited so don’t hesitate and contact John Pike by e-mail [email protected] if you would like to come along or contact [email protected] .

Grand Spring Plant Fair

Our Grand Spring Plant Fair will be held at the Fear Hall, Keynsham on Saturday 21st May 2016 in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and other Rotary charities.

Following last year’s successful event, we will again have a great choice of plants for sale as well as coffee and refreshments. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. and entry will be free. Over recent years, local Rotary clubs have helped raise awareness of Prostate Cancer and we know that our continued support will contribute to hasten a cure for this all too common disease. We very much look forward to welcoming you to our event. Contact: [email protected]

Bath Cycle Relay Event

We are running a new and exciting charity cycle relay event on Friday 10th June 2016, at the Odd Down cycle track, Bath. The idea is that local em-ployers and businesses enter sponsored teams of three or four to compete in a three hour relay race. This will be a professionally run event to raise the profile of cycling, challenge the teams and help us to raise funds for three charities. We are support-ing The Hive (formerly Mencap North Avon), Julian House, Bath and Qhubeka (World Bicycle Relief, Africa). We have a specially dedicated web site which has full details and facilities for registering, as well as details of the three charities involved. Please go to: http://bathcyclerelay.org.uk . If you are interested please sign up, inform other inter-ested groups and if you just want to come along and spectate, entry is free.

SALTFORD SCRABBLE CLUB

The re-invigorated Scrabble Club meeting in the afternoons, has had two Wednesday Carvery lunches at The Crown recently, and played Scrab-ble there afterwards.

20 of us were made very welcome, and enjoyed the Carvery. The Club will revert to evening meet-ings for the summer from MONDAY, 4 APRIL.

SALTFORD VILLAGE CHOIR

The Choir had it’s AGM in March and we were

again found to be a happy band with two success-ful concerts during the year.

After many years in the job the chairman,Tony Williams, stepped down and was replaced by Daphne Rahn.

We would like to thank Tony very much for the sterling service he has given during his office.

We are now rehearsing for our next concert “Summer Celebration”on Saturday 11th June which will feature more than a nod to the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Tickets will be available later from any choir mem-ber or 01225 873224.

SALTFORD WALKERS

Saltford Walkers were delighted to be invited to participate in the first Keynsham Walking Festival and we wish the organisers a very successful weekend. They’ve created a diverse programme, encompassing our beautiful local Countryside and I’m sure visitors to the area and locals alike will have a marvellous weekend.

As a local walking club who’ve been around for the past 40 years Saltford Walkers were, like the other clubs in the area, pleased to learn that we would be getting our very own group of Walkers are Welcome. We look forward to fair weather for, what I am sure, will be the first of many walking festivals.

Helen Gilroy, Chairwoman, Saltford Walkers

SALTFORD ENVIRONMENT GROUP

Railway path habitat restoration project has new co-ordinator

We are pleased to announce that recently recruited Saltford Environment Group member Odette McCarthy is SEG’s new railway path habitat restoration project coordinator. This will enable us to take the project to its next phase, primarily to prevent the area from reverting back to scrub and trees, obscuring views and shading some of the rare sun-loving plants that have recently returned. Anyone wishing to join the project volunteer list should contact Odette via SEG’s Chairman, Phil Harding ([email protected]).

History project reveals local humanitarian hero

Fighting the French from his early teens, holding directorships for two railway companies, and funding education, Admiral Kelly was probably Saltford’s most remarkable 19th Century resident. But what was not known in Saltford until it now, as a result of Saltford Environment Group’s history project, was his important role in rescuing African slaves whilst facing great personal danger and

then providing graphic and harrowing evidence in court that was used thereafter by a prominent campaign against slavery backed by Queen Victoria.

Admiral Benedictus Marwood KELLY was born in 1785, at Holsworthy, Devon and died in 1867 aged 82 at Saltford House. Having joined the Royal Navy at just 13 Benedictus rose to the rank of Admiral (on the reserve list) in 1863 after active service in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and, as we have recently discovered, in the anti-slavery patrols.

He was posted as Captain to command HMS Pheasant on anti-slavery patrols off the west coast of Africa between 1818 and 1822. These patrols were dangerous and Captain Kelly lost several of his men. Some were murdered by Portuguese slave traders in a successful escape bid and oth-ers including the ship’s surgeon died from yellow fever. It is likely that Captain Kelly contracted it too as he retired from active service on health grounds after this posting.

Captain Kelly and his men rescued over 300 African slaves from Portuguese slave traders. But it was his graphic and compassionate evidence to the Court of Sierra Leone of the horrendous conditions suffered by 71 slaves held on the Nova Felicidade when it was seized by HMS Pheasant in 1819 that proved especially influential thereafter.

His evidence was reproduced in several publica-tions during the 1820s and was helpful for those seeking the complete abolition of the slave trade. Some 20 years later it was repeated in the 1840 prospectus for the “Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and the Civilization of Africa”. The

society’s President was HRH Prince Albert. Prince Albert and his new wife Queen Victoria were each individually listed as financial supporters of the society.

Admiral Kelly was also a supporter of education. He made a grant of £100 to Saltford School in 1864 and, more famously, when he died in 1867 he bequeathed £200,000 for the establishment of Kelly College that was built in Tavistock, Devon. This opened in 1877 as a boarding school for the “sons of Naval Officers and other gentlemen” (Kelly College merged with Mount House and became Mount Kelly in 2014).

He died without children but his widow Juliana, a local philanthropist, survived him for a further 29 years. Juliana generously paid for the re-building of Saltford School in Queen’s Square in 1874. Juliana died in 1896 and bequeathed financial gifts under the care of the Rector of Saltford to benefit poor parishioners.

You can read much more in a fully illustrated online article about Admiral Kelly and his many exploits on Saltford Environment Group’s website (www.saltfordenvironmentgroup.org.uk) – simply visit the history project web page and click on the Admiral Kelly link.

ment Group (SEG) carried out a geophysics survey for a significant section of the field on the south side of Saltford where a Roman coffin complete with the skeleton of a young man was found in 1948.

The 2015 survey indicated the possible presence of some prehistoric roundhouses in the northern portion of the field. These possible roundhouse drip gullies suggest Iron Age settlement in the area (Note: a late bronze age axe blade was dis-covered in this field in 2014). Interestingly, possible evidence of roundhouses was found by BACAS in 2013 on a similar latitude due east on Saltford Golf Club land being surveyed in connection with the planning application for a new golf academy.

Of particular interest and thus linked to the Roman coffin were signs of what may be a Roman struc-ture on higher ground to the southern end of the field. The lines are quite sharp, of limited length and are set at right angles to each other. Any Roman structure of this nature in this part of the country would most likely be built of stone. To the north-east of this is a sub-circular feature which appears too strong to be another round house, and is assumed to be part of the Roman complex.

SEG is very grateful to the landowner, Adam Strat-ton, for allowing access to the field and to BACAS for carrying out this geophysics survey. The survey report is now published on SEG’s website (www.saltfordenvironmentgroup.org.uk – go to the His-tory Project’s Online Museum and select ‘Roman Saltford’).

Ladies’ Charity Coffee Morning

Thursday 25th February 2016

We were blessed with glorious sun shine all morn-ing, which encouraged the guests to sit outside on the balcony to drink their coffee. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Although the numbers may have been down a bit from last year, the guests spent their money. They came looking for bargains, cakes and prizes and I don’t think they were disappointed. The As New clothes did very well with a mink coat going for £2 as well as an ermine stole going at a rock bottom price. There were some very well made pieces flying out of the door.

The raffle made the most money and that was due to generous donations from Vauxhall Dealership, the flower shop in the Post Office, Co-op, Polkadot in Keynsham, Waitrose, Davies & Way, Avon Valley Farm plus lots of others. Thank you all very much for donating a raffle prize.

We raised £3,200 for Sparks, the Ladies Captain’s Charity. Sparks funds much needed medical re-search for children who are born with conditions that affect their quality of life.

The Saltford community supported our coffee morning and I want to thank everyone for coming and we hope you enjoyed the morning.

CALLING ALL FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS - SALTFORD FC – ALIVE AND WELL!

Based in the village Saltford FC currently field 2 adult teams, one in the Somerset County League and the other in the Mid-Somerset League. The club is run on a voluntary basis with team manag-ers, coaches and other club officials giving their time for free. Although we are never going to challenge for a place in Europe all concerned are eager to support the club going forward – and although the football can be very frustrating it is usually quite entertaining! We already have links with Saltford Stars, the village’s junior club, and are looking at strengthening these to provide a structured route for younger players into adult football in the future.

The bulk of the task of running the club falls to just a few people and the bulk of the match day task (getting the pitch ready for the game then clearing it afterwards) falls to the team managers / coaches. Although this isn’t an overly onerous task managers and coaches should be concentrating on the match itself!

The club would welcome any support it can get – help on match days, help looking after the grounds, even helping with coaching or some of the admin work through to fund raising ideas or possible sponsorship. We can’t offer a lot by way of recompense but can promise a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere.

Even if you are unable to help please drop by the pitches on a Saturday afternoon and watch the match – there is usually one on each weekend and a current fixture list is available on the club website - www.saltfordfc.co.uk.

If you are able to offer assistance, advice, sponsorship or even if you just want to find more details please visit the website or contact Phil or Nic Saunder on 01225 872541.

The Saltford Business Network promotes and supports businesses in Saltford. We offer access to local and regional information and organisations and the chance to share ideas with local colleagues to any business person residing in, or actively engaged in business in Saltford.

There’s been a lot on “scare stories” flying about. SBN started this year’s programme with our own: a discussion on “cyber” security led by a local IT consultancy and Network member – iTeam Solu-tions Ltd. Not so much scary as enlightening. Much serious note-taking as the risks and possible mitigations became clear. Our February get together at the Jolly Sailor was a bit more relaxing!

Our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 31 March (7pm at Saltford Golf Club) will be followed by a discussion with the B&NES Council Procurement Team. Do come and give us your views and support. Then on 28 April we are meeting for a networking breakfast at Newton Farm. (And many congratulations to SBN member Newton Farm Foods on being voted best farm shop and best local meat in the Bath Good Food Awards 2015!)

The 4th Saltford FestivalSaturday 10 June - Sunday 18 June 2017

Ideas and offers of help

A 9-day festival needs thoughtful and creative planning. Chris Essex and I have met briefly, put our fears and uncertainties to one side, and started the ball rolling! We fixed the dates (10th -18th June 2017). We agreed that continuing the 9 day framework has the benefit of including two weekends, and of giving the opportunity for as many people as possible to take part. At this early stage we are looking for offers of help with all types of organisation, ideas for events small and large, involvement from local societies and individuals. We need performance artistes, any creative or innovative ideas. We need people with technical expertise, practical skills, knowledge of publicity and marketing, good cooks, singers, dancers, musicians, artists, river folk and all with patience, resilience and a sense of humour!

Farandole 2015 Scarecrow competition Quiet moment, Eastover Farm Corned Beef Hash!

The village has talent, as has been shown in the other festivals This article has been prepared for the April/May SCAN. We then, in June, need to have in place a small working party to oversee the festival as a whole and smaller specialist groups to plan individual events. Please think hard about contributing and contact either of the following. Chris Essex and Jill Williams [email protected]

Recent Fundraising Events

You can read elsewhere about the success of the last Saltford Pantomime and the launch of our Community Cinema. Since the last edition we have given residents a couple of opportunities to have a good Spring clear out. Firstly on 21 February we held our latest Grand Flea Market and café and what a grand affair it was. Nearly 50 of you booked tables to sell your unwanted valuables and every room in the Hall including the stage was packed. Then most importantly hundreds of you turned up to get a bargain. In the space of just a few hours hundreds of bargains were bought and hundreds of rashers of Newton Farm bacon were consumed. Overall the Grand Flea Market raised over £1200 for the SCA. A huge thank you for supporting. The next Grand Flea will be on 2 October – see advert elsewhere.

Then on 12 March we gave you all another opportunity to this time donate items you didn’t want to our Jumble Sale for us to sell. We were staggered by the amount donated - many thanks. Again over 200 people came along to the Hall on a beautiful morning and there was a huge queue when the doors opened at 10am. In the space of just 2 hours we raised another £1100. A huge thank you again for supporting. Finally a further thank you for coming along and supporting our regular series of Antiques & Collectors Fairs, where the SCA runs our normal café in support.

Want to hear what’s going on first locally and receive a preview electronic version of SCAN, then why not join over 1000 others already doing so by emailing [email protected] today?

In the last SCAN we encouraged you to support financially the continued availability to walkers, runners and horse riders of the 4.5km of permissive pathsto the west and south of Saltford. I’m delighted to say that since launching that appeal in December we have now raised (including Gift Aid) just over £1600 towards our target of £3000. You have also generously donated a further £870 for the work of the SCA. A huge thank you to those who have already donated.

In order for the permissive paths to remain open next yearand beyond, the SCA needsspecific donations to raise £3000 and we are delighted that we are already over 1/2 of the way there this year. It needs just another 50 people to donate an average of £25, plus Gift Aid, to reach our target. This is a small price to pay for continuing to enjoy over 4.5km of footpaths.

Without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs, the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops.

If you regularly use any of these paths and wish to donate and don’t still have your donation envelope, then please either pick one up from the foyer of the Hall or go to our website where a specific section can be found at http://www.saltfordhall.co.uk/Permissive_paths.html This page provides a link to a downloadable Gift Aid form and details of how to make a donation including via Paypal. It also allows you to specifically indicate how you wish your donation to be used. We will provide a further update in the next SCAN.

OTHER NEWS

SALTFORD SANTA DASH 2015 PRESENTS CHARITY MONEYA meeting was held at Saltford Golf Club on 29th February when Roger Spooner race organiser of Saltford Santa Dash 2015 gave a very big thank you to all sponsors, en-trants, volunteer marshals, spectators and all people who donated time or money to this annual event.

Blessed with good weather on 6th December 2015 some 250 children and 650 adults ran their appropriate distance with Alex Lovell starting both races and then helping to present medals to all entrants.

This year 115 volunteer marshals gave their time for the duration of the morning. Roger also thanked his committee for their hard work in arranging a superb event. He an-nounced that it had raised some £10775.91 for charity and presented cheques to both Time2Share and The Carers Centre, who both told the assembled audience how they were going to use this donated money.

This year it is hoped that the event will take place on Sunday 4th December so please put it in your diaries to start the festive season in a fun but healthy way.

PLEASE HELP ANNA SELF REACH HER £3000 TARGET!Growth International Volunteer excursions (GIVE), the charity I am volunteering with, aims to encourage communities to become more sustainable. By helping to provide es-sential infrastructure such as water pumps, wells, waste management systems and edu-cation, vulnerable communities can begin to support themselves to a higher standard.

In June 2016, I’ll be travelling to Zanzibar Island with a group of international volun-teers. We’ll be working with locals to build wells, using bricks made from old water

bottles filled with sand. We will install a pump to access ground water and be teaching English in schools!

Communities in Zanzibar have no access to clean drinking water; the beaches are littered with rubbish from tourism and industries. By the time we have finished the pro-ject, the beaches will be safer and cleaner, and the water will be safe to drink!

At the end of the project, my team and I are climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the world!

GIVE, unlike many organisations is a local charity meaning the costs for me to par-ticipate in the program are quite high. This means I’ll be busy fundraising until I fly to Tanzania! My first challenge is to climb the three peaks, Snowden, Scafell and Ben Nevis. This will be great training for Kilimanjaro! I’ll also be taking orders for cakes and cookies!

Whilst I’m out there I will be photographing the scenery surrounding Kilimanjaro, Zan-zibar and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. I’m taking requests for orders for these photographs which will be printed and framed! If you have any special requests and would like to order any pictures, please contact me! The money I raise will pay for all travel arrangements, including return flights to Dar es Salam. Costs of accommodation, food, fresh water and project materials are also included.

To donate or to find out more about the project please contact Anna at [email protected] or to donate go to https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/anna-self

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL HELPS DIAL-A-RIDE PASSENGERSSaltford Parish Council presented Keynsham and District Dial-a-Ride with wheelchair

and mobility scooter restraints for use on Dial-a-Ride minibuses. These allow for pas-

sengers in wheelchairs to be transported safely and securely. Pictured are Cllr Duncan

Hounsell, Chair of Saltford Parish Council, and Mr Bleddyn Phillips, a volunteer driver

who lives in Saltford and who applied for the special grant of £500 on behalf of Dial-

a-Ride. Dial-a-Ride serves well over 100

members in Saltford. Cllr Hounsell said

“Dial-a-Ride is a door to door fully acces-

sible minibus service for those who cannot

use conventional public transport. People

in Saltford use this service for shopping,

attending appointments, visiting friends.

It helps Saltford people take an active part

in community life who would otherwise

struggle. The Parish Council was delighted

to support Dial-a-Ride in this practical way.”

A low tax councilOut of 51 Parish and Town Councils in the B&NES area, Saltford Parish Council has raised the 4th lowest precept (tax) for 2016/17 (using a band D property for comparison purposes). Only Charlcombe, Chelwood and North Stoke have a lower parish precept for a band D property. A resident of a band D property in Saltford will pay about £17 a year towards the running of the Parish Council. The increase for 2016/17 is roughly equivalent to £1 per year per household.

£££Parking in SaltfordThank you to all residents and businesses who have sent inresponses during the Parish Council’s “conversation” on parking issues in and around Saltford. The Parish Council has set up a working party to consider all the responses and the parking issues with a target date of May 2016 to make recommendations to the full Parish Council. The aim is to have a set of proposals which can then be taken to B&NES Council and other bodies for possible future action.

Re-opening a railway station at Saltford as part of MetroWestParish Councillors are often asked what is happening about the station.Re-opening a station at Saltford remains a live project. Timetable capacity in the future is crucial to the project and B&NES Council is seeking up-to-date information regarding Saltford. £250k remains available in the B&NES Council budget to take the station to the next stages of project development when timetable opportunities are better known. No potential sites including the existing site have been ruled out at this time. B&NES Council will put due weight on evidence provided by independent consultants. Further public engagement could take the form of another public consultation at an appropriate time. B&NES Council will endeavour to keep Saltford Parish Council informed of all developments. There are some key developments on the local railway that need to happen. The Bristol Area Signalling Renewal (BASRE) programme which is happening alongside the electrification of the main-line has started but needs to be completed. The railway track at Filton Bank has to be increased from 2 tracks to 4 in order to increase local rail capacity and enable the MetroWest programme as a whole to go ahead. The first phase of MetroWest – a passenger line opened to Portishead and half-hourly services across the Bristol-Bath sub-region – is expected to start in late 2019. The business case for a station at Saltford is dependent on the MetroWest project as a whole. The Parish Council will continue to keep residents informed about progress over the comingmonths and the next few years.

-------------------------------------------------------------We may not know you, but God does. He knows where you are in life and what concerns you have, and it is He who wants to reach out to you. He knows about the dark days as well as the good days. He knows of the days of joy and laughter as well as the days of despair. We encourage you to give Church a go, and see what happens. Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd who cares for people like us, and actually proved it by living and dying in our place to make a way back to God again.

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!Serve the Lord with gladness;Come before His presence with singing.Know that the Lord, He is God;It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. (Ps100:1-3)

Dear Friends Church in the Community

Over the last few weeks, the people of St Mary’s Church has been considering what it means to be the church in the community, we have our ideas, but would like to know your thoughts. How can we, the church in Saltford, help you the people of Saltford? Are there any specific issues you would like us to get involved in? Is there something you think we should be doing more off? It could be anything, lunch clubs, visiting, getting involved with the SCA’s vision for a Youth Worker, a project to help the lonely; a support group for people with cancer; putting on talks about big issues - let us know how we can help, so that we can truly become the church in the community.

Community in the Church We are beginning to make plans for a new memorial garden in St Mary’s Churchyard. A garden where the ashes of those we love can be placed, and a quiet area for people to come and sit to be near them. The project is in its early stages, but we are keen to involve people from the community who would be able to help us plan, design and implement it - particularly if you have expertise or interest in garden design and plants - so if this is you -please get in touch.

Blessings, Daile (Rector)
