The other day, my life was proceeding as usual. It was the last day before a well-needed vacation, and I had three lawns remaining to treat before heading home. I had run a little short of granular fertilizer, and wheeled my spreader near the curb, at the back of my truck. I walked behind my truck to grab a 50 lb. bag of fertilizer, which I had stacked on the right side of my truck that day. I lifted it up above the rear carrier on my pickup, took one step toward the curb, and at that very moment, a 15 year old with a student permit driving to the first football game of the season, rear-ended my truck. He was moving at about 15 mph. The right front corner of his truck struck my truck approximately 12 – 15” behind me as I took that step toward the curb, and by the time I turned around to see what had happened, my stainless steel fertilizer carrier had smashed his truck’s front end, puncturing his radiator, and the impact jarred my pickup box into the back corner of the passenger compartment. In my opinion, this was much too close of a call!

The Lord had been watching down on me that day, and the fact that I loaded the fertilizer on the right side of the truck instead of the left allowed me to be here to write this article today.

For most of us, it takes something like this to remind us that life is a very fragile thing, and that many simple little decisions each and every day can be the difference between good things happening or very bad things happening.

Please use this reminder to make sure you kiss your loved ones every time you see them, and tell them how much you love them, don’t take anything in life for granted, thank the Lord each day for blessing your life and allowing you another day on this Earth, be smart and think through decisions, and try your best to make the right choices, and finally, if you’re a turf specialist, always check the street in both directions to make sure no one is coming your way.

every kind I have learned a tiny bit about the differences in managing Golf Course Turf vs. Sports Fields vs. Lawns. Some of the differences are readily apparent, some are very subtle. In view of all those differences, I have found that people who manage turfgrass as a career have one thing very much in common; each of us would like others to know the complexities of our work. The IPLCA Mission Statement:IPLCA's purpose is to promote our industry through professionalism, community involvement and a commitment to serve the needs of our customers. IPLCA members are dedicated to providing profes-sional services from well-trained and certified appli-cators with safety and Iowa's ecology in mind. One of the main outlets for IPLCA information is the Iowa Turfgrass Conference & Trade Show. That event provides a wealth of information for Profes-sional Turfgrass Managers. The Iowa Turfgrass Insti-tute provides both Lawn Care and Landscape spe-cific workshops each year at the Iowa ‘show,’ as well as Lawn Care specific sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. Your involvement and attendance in these programs is critical to their success and continuation.Thursday afternoon, January 19th is the Pesticide Continuing Education program, take advantage of that opportunity to get PAT from live speakers in an interactive forum.

Get more involved with the IPLCA; it will ultimately be good for you and your profession.

One of the challenges facing IPLCA is involving people with the operation and administration of the Association. Everyone is busy; doing more with less at work, taking care of family, finding time to spend with friends, sitting in bleachers, the list is endless. So why would anyone say “yes” to serving on a Non Profit Board of Directors? Service to a board does several things for you.

• New experience in a setting you may find challenging and interesting• A chance to develop your team skills and communication proficiency• New friends and cohorts in your chosen field• Exposure to strategic planning, budget review, public relations issues• Advanced understanding of Financial Statements• Improved Perspective of your Industry• A chance to contribute to the Associations mission and causes

Every IPLCA Member should consider service in the future. Also, remember that you can benefit your profession and your chapter by getting involved. Attend the IPLCA Annual Meeting during the Iowa Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show; give input and feedback to the IPLCA Board. Your ideas and input are a critical component of the Association’s success. In talking with Professional Turfgrass Managers of

Ticketing begins for Iowa’s texting banEffective July 1, Iowa drivers will pay the price for tex-ting while driving – and we’re not talking about overage charges. Ticketing has begun for the law enacted last year banning all drivers from text messaging while driv-ing, and further restricting the use of cell phones and other handheld electronic communication and enter-tainment devices, such as iPods, by novice drivers. For adultsFor drivers age 18 and older with unrestricted licenses, the new law makes it illegal to read or write text mes-sages while operating a motor vehicle, except when the vehicle is parked and off the traveled portion of the roadway. While not recommended, adults are not restricted from talking on cell phones while driving or from using other handheld electronic devices. This law is considered “secondary enforcement” for adults, which means a law enforcement officer must suspect another law is being broken to stop an adult driver who may be texting. A violation of the texting law is not considered a moving violation for an adult driver with a full license. It is a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $30, plus a $10.50 criminal sur-charge and $60 in court costs, totaling $100.50. For novice driversThe law is quite different for drivers with restricted licenses. Drivers operating under an instruction permit, minor school license, intermediate license or license issued to teens not attending school are prohibited from using any electronic communication or entertain-ment device while driving, including cell phones and MP3 players, for any reason to talk, text or listen to music. This law is “primary enforcement” for holders of these types of licenses, which means a law enforce-ment officer can stop a young driver if a cell phone or other device is being used and no other laws are being broken. While the violation itself is not a moving violation, it is a violation of the restrictions of the license, so the teen risks losing driving privileges for 30 days for the first violation. If convicted, the fine is $50, plus a $17.50 criminal surcharge and $60 in court costs, totaling $127.50.

Seat belt useAnother highway safety law requires all drivers and pas-sengers age 18 and under to be restrained in a vehiclesafety belt, car seat or booster seat, depending on the age of the child. A person convicted of violating the Safety Belts and Safety Harnesses law is guilty of a simple misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $50, plus a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs, totaling $127.50. A driver not ensuring the proper securing of all chil-dren in the vehicle is in violation of the Child Restraint Devices law. This simple misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of $100, plus a $35 surcharge and $60 in court costs, totaling $195. Source: July/August 2011 Inside Iowa Department of Transportation

QR Codes

A new thing to be on the lookout for is QR Codes. For those of you that don’t know what a QR Code is, it is a Quick Response code that you can scan with your smart phone, or tablet (only if it has a camera). To be able to scan it you will need the proper app for it. If you search for QR Scanner in your app search from your phone you will be able to find plenty of free QR Scanners. After the app is downloaded, you can open it up and position the code into your screen. Click scan and it will relocat-ed you to the site I have the QR code programmed to. IPLCA plans to use this for fast registration from your phone or tablet. If you never have used a QR Code before please try out the one on this page! It will bring you to the IPLCA homepage. From there you will be able to search around on the site and in the membership database. Be on the lookout for QR Codes in the future with important updates and registration for the 78th Iowa Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show!

Scan the Code to be taken to the IPLCA homepage on your phone or tablet!
