Real spring weather is finally here—it seemed like winter
lasted twice as long this year. Love this time of year when the Bermuda turns green and flowers and trees bloom. Your Club is busy preparing for Memorial Day weekend with improvements to the Cabana, Halfway House, and the patio at Casual Dining. You will notice some nice improvements that have come from your Capital Investment. Menu and décor changes will also be in the near future in Casual Dining. Once again, we had a profitable March, and April is even better! That three-month streak will continue if you support our many activities
and improvements. Increased use of our Club by our younger members is nice to see and the pool, beach, and cabana use will only enhance our bottom line and allow for further changes. This is truly the start of a transformation that was necessary to our long term prosperity. New membership development is healthy and we are headed in the right direction. Everyone wants and needs to be part of a winning team and we have that at James River Country Club, thanks to you. It is truly my pleasure to serve you as your President this year.

In addition to the capital projects identified below, we are also
moving ahead on revitalizing our River Room patio area. We are planning to install eight, nine-foot Casablanca umbrellas and replace the tables, chairs and seat cushions for added comfort and occupancy. Outside the gated patio we will be relocating some of
the garden material and creating a hardscape patio with the use of pavers. Residential outdoor lounge furniture will be added with a 48” fire pit and swivel rocking chairs in the corner. Most of this work will be done before the Memorial Day weekend. We will keep you posted on the developments.

Burden Building Construction is renovating the exterior of the 10th Tee Snack Bar including a new roof and new siding.
As part of the renovation we will remove the screens from the eating area to make it open air as you can see from the rendering above. We will also begin renovating the restrooms and later in the summer we will renovate the serving area. There will be times when we will have to use temporary toilets and times when food service will be suspended, but when finished, this facility will be much improved.

Tenth Tee
Construction has begun on two projects with the goal of having full use of these facilities for member use this summer.
Pool Facilities
Other News
Design work continues on the Welcome Center/Pro Shop, but construction will not begin until late sum-mer or early fall when the demand on our facilities is lower.
We have other projects in the works as well and we will keep you updated as we make progress.
EPOC Construction was awarded a contract to renovate the restrooms below the pool cabana.
These facilities are over 20 years old and were in need of major renovations which will include new floors, new lighting, new plumbing fixtures and a new ventilation system. Look out for construction traffic along the first hole as we access the work area.
BRAD LEONARD Brad joined our JRCC team in February of 2017. He quickly proved himself and became an integral part of the golf operation. He has been placed in charge of all outside golf facilities including range and gazebo set up, cart fleet maintenance, bag room and push cart storage. Brad has excelled at increasing the member satisfaction by anticipating needs and being prepared for any situation that could arise. Please join me in congratulating Brad on being selected as our May Employee of the Month.

Golf NewsA Note from the Pro Jeremy Franks, PGA
May is one of the best golfing months for JRCC. The summer
heat is not yet upon us but the course is coming out of hibernation and the spring flowers and foliage are beautiful. We encourage you to come out and play! The golf events are in full swing with our Men’s Member-Member kicking off this month’s tournaments on May 5 and 6. This two-man team event, covered by the Tournament Fund, provides for great competition over two days. Prizes are awarded for both gross and net and there is an awards banquet and Island Party on the beach. The One-Day Member-Guest will be played on Friday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m. This event provides our members with a great opportunity to showcase the Club. Members can play with a guest at a reduced guest rate of $55 or pair up with another member. This two-person team event has been one of the most popular events on the calendar and we encourage you to take advantage. The second Twilight Golf of the season will be played on Sunday, May 27. Twilight Golf is perfect for all levels. The 9-hole Captain’s Choice format allows for beginners and low handicappers to play
together. The field is split into two divisions by combined team handicap to provide players of all levels a chance to win! Call the golf shop to sign up. Memorial Day Sweeps is open to all golfers who would like to participate. If you plan to play golf on Memorial Day and have a handicap, you can pair up with anyone in your group as a two-person team and play against the field. A player can pair up with all partners in the foursome to provide a bigger pot and increase their chances of winning. Simply let the golf shop know you are interested in playing and we will provide you with a team scorecard. Scores will be tabulated at the end of the day. Are you interested in ladies’ golf at JRCC? May is a great month to get started. If you already play golf, our Ladies’ League is played on Tuesday mornings. If you are interested in learning the game, joining the ladies’ golf group provides you with a clinic every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. that is designed around getting on the course. For more information on joining our Ladies’ Golf Program, contact the Golf Pro Shop. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone out on the course.
GolfCommittee Steven C. Suttle, ChairmanReport by Rob Wilmans, Director of Golf & Grounds Maintenance
Looks like the eternity of winter has finally come to an end. It has
been at least ten years since the Bermuda grass has been this slow to come out of dormancy. The fairways have been mowed down to three eighths of an inch to increase the amount of sun and heat getting to the plants to enhance green up. Unfortunately, we did have some winterkill on the Bermuda grass around the greens. Mainly the high sandy areas took a beating during the cold, windy weather. Sodding will be done around the greens during the first part of May. Fairway turf is still coming out of dormancy but there is undoubtedly some winterkill in them as well. We are monitoring the situation and will work on a recovery program, as needed, to encourage as much green up as early as we can. Greens were aerated on April 9, using the deep tine tractor mounted aerator in conjunction with our normal program. Sand was applied a bit heavier than in the past to ensure that all holes got filled and to help with a smoother surface after healing. Cool temperatures did not help the recovery process to be as speedy as we hoped for, but the process should pay dividends going into the summer season. Seems like abnormal is the new normal for weather patterns but we will try to work with Mother Nature and not against her. Get out and enjoy your course and grounds!

Member News
The weather is finally starting to cooperate! That means lots of
outdoor activities at James River! And, thanks to the efforts of our Capital Projects Management Committee, we will have lots of new upgrades to help enjoy our outdoor activities! The upgrades to the cabana, pool bathrooms, 10th tee food and beverage “shack,” and the back patios have already begun. It won’t be long before we will all be enjoying the pool and beach. And don’t forget that we’ll be able to enjoy the pool seven days a week (with full bar service I might add!) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and possibly longer. Rob’s grounds crew also developed a new contraption that will enable them to more effectively groom our beach, removing loose and dangerous objects. This year we’ll have two large (8-12 person) floats just off the beach on the James River. I hope to see everyone enjoying all these wonderful amenities with
the best views on the Peninsula! If you know anyone who would enjoy all our Club has to offer, please either bring them to the Club or let us know who they are so we can follow up. Remember that all prospective members are posted for 30 days before the Board can vote on them. So, if they want to enjoy the entire summer, now is the time to sign up. And don’t forget that the primary sponsor receives 10% of the new member’s initiation fee in food and beverage and guest fee credits. For those who were unable to attend the Saturday Night Spring Fever event on April 7…you missed quite the event! The “Studio 54” Ballroom and everyone’s outfits looked tremendous! Due to its popularity, this will become an annual event. Prizes were awarded (see page 4). Please keep your comments and concerns flowing! They are helping to make our Club the place to be!
