A couple of weeks ago, a group of us were working on projects for the neighborhood and we started discussing how many people it takes to make events like the Fourth of July parade successful. It doesn't seem like many until you start adding it up: a team of Watch Captains help out with security and communication, the Garden Club and a few other volunteers help out with the entrance, and members of the Board of Directors manage maintenance, special projects, and events. And, of course, a good portion of the residents pitch in to support these activities by becoming dues paying members. Uh-oh...I suddenly realized that I had not paid my dues. And there was another volunteer present who, like me, had simply forgotten about it. Or put it off. After a good laugh, we checked the books and I felt much better - or maybe not. It turns out that we weren't the only ones off to a late start this year. In fact, the Civic League membership is a little behind our goal of 200 members. So what better time, than just before the big July 4th event, to remind everyone that we count on you, each year, for your membership. It's easier than ever to pay. If you are a techie, you can use PayPal. Old folks like me who still like to use checks can still do so. You can stop by the food ticket table at the 4th of July picnic and drop your dues into the box. Or, also like me, you can rush over to the Treasurer's house right away and take care of it. But don't feel bad; you are in good company. Speaking of the picnic, we have a couple of surprises for this year's celebration. Our goal is to at least double the number of floats in the parade. Yes, kids will still be decorating and riding bicycles for chances to win prizes. This year, there will be even more of them. What else? How about more entree choices? You can be present when we unveil the perpetual trophy for the egg toss. It's epic! And you won't want to miss the Honor Guard's presentation of the colors. You will also hear a memorable version of the National Anthem before we open the food line and start the party! Special thanks to those residents who helped make this year's Garden Club scholarships possible. The winners are announced in this edition of the newsletter. You can also find a detailed schedule of events for the 4th of July. I look forward to seeing you all at the picnic! A couple of weeks ago, a group of us were working on projects for the neighborhood and we started discussing how many people it takes to make events like the Fourth of July parade successful. The Fourth of July - Adapted from the Pioneer Woman Initially adopted by Congress on July 2, 1776, the revised version of the Declaration of Independence

was not adopted until two days later.

The Declaration of Independence was penned by Thomas Jefferson and signed by 56 men representing 13 colonies.

The “Star Spangled Banner” was written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 and not decreed the official national anthem of the United States until 1931.

Three U.S. Presidents, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, died on July 4th; Adams and Jefferson died within hours of each other in 1826 while Monroe died in 1831.

Americans consume about 155 million hot dogs on Independence Day alone; it is the biggest hot dog holiday of the year.

Americans began observing the Fourth of July as early as 1777, when the first-ever major celebration in Philadelphia included a parade, a thirteen-shot cannon salute and fireworks.

To avoid cracking it, the Liberty Bell has not been rung since 1846. To mark the quintessential day, every Fourth of July, it is symbolically tapped 13 times.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson are responsible for the bald eagle as the national bird; Benjamin Franklin wanted it to be the turkey.

The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 professional firework displays light up the skies in the United States each 4th of July.

Progress continues slowly. The city legal department is now preparing “Right of Entry Agreements” for about 6 properties after researching property line issues. Once these documents are completed, the permit application will be filed. We don’t anticipate any issues with our application, but timing will be dependent on the regulatory review process.

Dredging Update – Frank Gurdziel

The project plan is to operate transfer sites for the dredge material at our community boat ramp on the west side and to utilize a planned city transfer site by Pep Boys for the east side. The city site will also be the location for transfer of city dredging from the Lynnhaven River. Money is in the city budget to dredge the Lynnhaven River. Unfortunately, the expected engineering, regulatory review and construction of the city site on the Lynnhaven are about 18 months away. We are working on alternatives for the east side for the first phase of our community project.

Chesopeian Colony Garden Club Join us! No experience necessary - just ask the President! Be willing to socialize and learn from exceptional speakers while supporting local charities and helping to make our front entrance more beautiful. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month from September to June, and alternate between day meetings at the Princess Anne Country Club, and evening meetings at members’ homes within the Colony. The dates in the afternoon at the Princess Anne Country Club for 2015/2016 (11:30 AM- 1:30) will be: September 10th, November 12th, December 10th, February 11th, and May 12th. We are looking into the Artist Gallery and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens as alternatives for two of these dates. Evening meetings for 2015/2016 (6:00-9:00 PM) will be October 8th, December Holiday Social, January 14th, March 10th, April 14th, and June’s Summer Social. Meetings are not mandatory, so you can attend as many or as few as you’d like. Our current year is coming to a close, but if you’d be interested in joining next season, contact Karen Maszewski email: [email protected] or call 464-4395. Dues will be $40, which covers the cost of plantings for the front entrance, educational programs, donations to local charities, as well as our two socials in the winter and summer. If you wish to support the garden club, but don’t want to be a member, you can do so by making a donation of any amount to the Chesopeian Colony Garden Club and drop off or mail to: Karen Maszewski, 2812 Pine Ridge Lane. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully, Karen Maszewski Club President

Chesopeian Colony had a successful Clean the Bay event for 2015! Together, 7 volunteers cleaned approximately 3 square miles of shoreline and collected 150lbs of trash and debris! Afterwards, all regional Clean the Bay volunteers were celebrated with a BBQ picnic and band at Great Neck Park. Despite our success, there’s still much more that needs to be done.

Clean the Bay Day 2016 will be a great time to clean up our neighborhood’s shoreline and improve the local habitat for our marine life! Don’t forget, this is a great way to log community service hours, and for local Girl and Boy Scouts to earn merit badges. Thanks again to all the volunteers who made 2015 Clean the Bay Day possible, and I look forward to seeing more volunteers for 2016!

One of our favorite family outings is watching for shooting stars - lying on blankets on the beach late at night, counting who finds the most meteors. We’ve also seen meteors while floating in our boat on the Lynnhaven River. Each year NASA.gov lists dates of meteor showers as well at peak dates for watching. This summer, the Perseids are expected to be a good watch as there is a new moon, August 14. The Perseids are known for fast and bright meteors that frequently leave trails. Peak activity is expected August 12-13, but meteors can be seen July 13-August 26. Here are some tips for watching: Get as far away from lights as possible with a clear view of the sky. Meteors travel away from the constellation for which the shower

is named (i.e. Perseus). Showers are not fireworks; expect to wait for at least a half hour. You won’t need telescopes or binoculars. Relax your eyes, not

looking at any one spot, ready to zone in on movement above. Don’t look at your cell phone or other light; it will destroy your

night vision. Use a red light, if you have to look at something. Good Luck!

Catch a Shooting Star…
