Does anyone else hate creepy, dark parking garages at night?

Anytime I walk to my car at night inthe airport or a theater parking lot, scenes from horror movies playthrough my head.

Maybe I’m overly paranoid, butothers must feel the same way, which is why automakers came upwith puddle lamps. These lightsshine down from the side mirrors toilluminate the area right in front ofthe door.

And Land Rover’s new RangeRover Evoque added a touch ofclass to its puddle lights.

When approaching the car atnight, you simply unlock the cardoors using the key fob and a lightshines down from each of the sidemirrors, illuminating and eliminat-ing the creepy shadow just beneaththe crossover’s front doors.

The Evoque’s lights create a sil-houette of the crossover. It’s justinnocent enough to disarm my para-noia, and it adds a touch of elegancewhere you wouldn’t expect it.

DETROIT — From minicars to monster pickups, sales of new cars andtrucks surged in June andeased concerns thatAmericans would beturned off by slower hir-ing and other scary head-lines.

Automakers sold near-ly 1.3 million cars andtrucks in June, up 22 per-cent from the same monthlast year.

Chrysler posted itsbest June in five years.Sales soared at Volks-wagen, which is on trackfor its best year in the U.S.since 1973.

The results allayed

fears that the car mar-ket’s momentum hadstalled. U.S. sales were ontrack to reach 14.5 millionafter the first four monthsof the year.

But the annual pacedropped to 13.8 million inMay, as the stock marketplunged and hiringslowed.

June brought moreworrisome news aboutjobs growth and consum-er confidence.

But buyers didn’t goaway last month. In fact,June’s sales pace rose to14.1 million, according toAutodata Corp. And ifsales stay at that level forall of 2012, it will be the in-dustry’s best year since2007.

Falling gas prices, cheaper loans and newmodels like the Ford Es-cape and Dodge Dartdrew buyers.

Arevivedhousingmar-ket lifted sales of pickups. And there was still plentyof demand from peoplewho bought cars in themiddle of the last decadeand needed to replacethem.

Annual sales hit a highof 17 million in 2005, andthose cars and trucks arenow seven years old.

“If a family in Iowa’sonly mode of transporta-tion is on the fritz, theyare going to buy a replace-ment vehicle, even ifSpain’s economy is on thebrink of collapse,” says

Alec Gutierrez, a seniormarket analyst at KelleyBlue Book.

Automakers also start-ed their IndependenceDay promotions a littleearly and that juiced salesat the end of the month.

“In the last two weekswe really went all-out,”says Bill Underriner, whosells Volvo, Buick, Hondaand Hyundai cars in Bill-ings, Mont.

Colorful ads with holi-day deals excited buyers, says Jessica Caldwell, asenior analyst with pric-ing site Edmunds.com.The Buick Verano smallcar — one of Underriner’sbig sellers last month — isnow $239 per month for atwo-year lease. That’s $50

less than usual.Low interest rates are

making deals like the Ve-rano’s more attractive. The average interest rateon a 60-month new-carloan is 4.5 percent, downfrom 6.98 percent twoyears ago, according toBankrate.com. Creditavailability is also im-proving.

“The affordability ofcars is probably at an all-time high,” ChryslerGroup sales chief Reid Bi-gland said last week.

Falling gas pricesmeant buyers were morelikely to consider biggercarsandSUVsinJune, notjust the small cars thatsold well at the beginningof the year. Jeep Liberty

SUV sales rose 50 percentand the Ford Explorerjumped 35 percent. Gasaveraged $3.43 per gallonat the end of June, down 41cents from the end ofMarch.

Pickup truck sales alsoimproved as home build-ing perked up. Chrysler’sRam pickup sales rose 12percent and sales of theFord F-Series — whichhas long been the coun-try’s best-selling vehicle— rose 11 percent.

At Chrysler, sales ofthe tiny Fiat 500 andChrysler 300 large sedanmore than doubled from ayear earlier, helping thecompany to a 20-percent

Q Which hybrid has highground clearance to go on

rough and rutted roads (like loggingroads, etc.) but not realoff-road stuff?

A It sounds like youneed an all-wheel-

drive SUV, and your bestbets among hybrid SUVsmight be the Ford Escapeor Toyota Highlander.

The 2012 EscapeHybrid has 8.3 inches of groundclearance and EPA estimates of30/27 mpg city/ highway with four-

wheel drive. The 2012 HighlanderHybrid has 8.0 inches of clearanceand EPA ratings of 28/28 mpg. The

Escape Hybrid starts ataround $32,000 but isdiscontinued for 2013,while the Highlanderstarts around $39,000.

You can certainly beatthose mileage ratingswith hybrid cars such asthe Toyota Prius, but theground clearance is only

5.7 inches, and it only comes withfront-wheel drive.

Toyota’s sales rose 60percent for the monthwhile Honda’s climbed 49percent, but that wasn’tsurprising.

The U.S. complaintThursday adds to a seriesof disputes with Beijingover market access forgoods ranging from poul-try to steel. Political ten-sions over trade aremounting as governmentstry to boost exports at atime of slumping global

demand.Washington accused

Beijing of improperly im-posing anti-dumping du-ties on American-madeautos worth $3 billion. TheChinese duties of 2 to 21.5percent affect cars andSUVs with engine capaci-ty of 2.5 liters or larger.

A Commerce Ministrystatement said Beijingwill “properly handle therequest for consultationsunder the WTO disputesettlement procedures”— the first step in resolv-

ing a complaint. If consultations fail to

resolve the issue, Wash-ington can request a WTOdispute panel. A rulingcan take 18 months to twoyears.

WTO rules allow coun-tries to raise import du-ties to offset impropersubsidies and dumping. The United States con-tends China has imposedanti-dumping duties im-properly to obstruct im-ports of U.S. goods andshield its own producers.

Last month, the U.S. suc-cessfully challenged Chi-nese tariffs imposed onAmerican steel productsand has also objected totariffs on chicken prod-ucts.

The Chinese dutiescover more than 80 per-cent of U.S. auto exportsto China and fall dispro-portionately on GeneralMotors and Chrysler be-cause of actions Obamatook to support the autoindustry during the finan-cial crisis, according to

White House spokesmanJay Carney.

In March, the U.S., theEuropean Union and Ja-pan filed a WTO challengeto Chinese curbs on ex-ports of rare earths usedin making mobile phonesand other high-tech prod-ucts. China has about 30percent of the world’srare earths deposits butaccounts for more than 90percent of production.

China’s trading part-ners say export quotasand other controls raise

the price of rare earthsabroad, giving its manu-facturers an unfair ad-vantage. Beijing says thecurbs are for environ-mental protection, not in-tended to help Chinesecompanies.

In December, ChineseCommerce Minister ChenDeming defended the du-ties on U.S.-made vehiclesas legal under interna-tional rules.

The 2012 Porsche Cayman Roffers one of the best blendsof power and handling for the

money. The Cayman R can legitimately be

called an extension of the driver. Itsresponses are that intuitive, its transi-tions that natural and balanced.

It starts with the steering. The setupis amazingly natural, free of excesspower assistance that can get in theway of steering feedback.

The Cayman’s front-to-rear weightdistribution is another important ele-ment. With the car’s mid-engine lay-out, Porsche has achieved a 45/55weight distribution, front/rear. The carisn’t hauling around a lot of weight, either. Beyond that, the center of grav-ity feels especially low. The CaymanR’s ride height is lower than othertrims; it uses an exclusive suspensionthat drops the car about an inch.

All this lets you tackle corners withan enthusiasm that would have othercars begging you to slow down. TheCayman R begs you to go faster.

The engine pulls strongly even at

highway speeds, quickly adding 10mph to your cruising speed.

Whereas everything else related tothe driving experience exudes preci-sion and exactness, the shifter feels alittle vague and muddy.

The bucket seats are firmly cush-ioned and have considerable side bol-sters that hold you in place incorners. The interior is decent —with good fit-and-finish and materi-als quality — but it’s not especiallyluxurious considering its startingprice. The car’s mid-engine layoutresults in two trunks.

The Cayman is as appealing as everand a perfect country-road compan-ion. Rejoice, car enthusiasts, rejoice.
