CONDUCTOR
M c L E A N O R C H E S T R A 9
DEAR FRIENDS,
I am thrilled to begin my fifth year as Music Director and Conductor of the McLean
Orchestra, coinciding with the celebration of our 46th Season. How time flies!
Here is our big news – we are ON THE MOVE!! While we look for a new home, we intend to expand our horizons by taking our show on the road, bringing our great McLean Orchestra to YOU! Three of our concerts will be at The Falls Church Episcopal and our holiday concert at The Potomac School in McLean.
Our season opens with the exuberant ‘Eroica’ symphony of Beethoven, preceded by a haunting testament, ‘The Wound Dresser’ by John Adams. This important autobiographical missive is based on texts of poet Walt Whitman, also a male nurse in the Civil War, searching for his brother among the wounded right here in Washington, DC. The dark, pensive text details the horrors of war while underscoring a silent salute to our military and the honoring of those wounded or who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Baritone Christopher Magiera will be the voice of Walt Whitman.
We’ll usher in the holidays with festivity, nostalgia and fun at The Potomac School in McLean, joined by the fresh young voices of The Potomac School Madrigal Singers, prepared by Jerry Rich. Opening the concert will be one of McLean Orchestra’s finest soloists: Wes Nichols, Principal Oboe.
An all-Mozart evening featuring the Symphony No. 34 and the towering Requiem, a cornerstone of Mozart’s genius featured prominently in the movie Amadeus, will be presented in March. Sharing the stage with us will be the professional singers of Choralis, prepared by director Gretchen Kuhrmann, and four outstanding soloists.
The pinnacle of our season? A blockbuster, all-Russian program of Borodin, Tchaikovsky, featuring exemplary cello soloist David Teie, and the epic romantic tour-de-force of Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2.
Lastly, in celebration of our great community treasure, The McLean Orchestra, we want to meet YOU at our receptions in the lobby immediately following each performance. Come on tour with us this season, and spread the good word!
Miriam Burns, Music Director
LETTER FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR
M c L E A N O R C H E S T R A10
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE McLEAN ORCHESTRA,
Welcome to the 46th season of the McLean Orchestra, which promises to be another
season of artistically polished and varied performances, under the leadership of Maestra Miriam Burns. I am pleased to take on the role of President of the Board of Trustees, and thank our past presidents and board members for their accomplishments and energy on behalf of the McLean Orchestra.
Now in her 5th season as Music Director of the Orchestra, Maestra Burns has planned our 4-concert journey, from Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, from Tchaikovsky to holiday favorites, from Mozart to John Adams. Our guest performers will include the Potomac School Madrigal Singers in December for Holiday Riches, and Choralis in March, for Mozart’s sublime Requiem.
We are very pleased to welcome our new Executive Director, Major Matthew S. Henry, who joins us officially in November. Major Henry has years of experience as a musician (trumpet is his instrument) and director, and comes to us from his position as Director of Staff and Associate Conductor of the US Air Forces Band. I hope you will take time to seek him out and get to know him, as we all offer our support in his role at this important time for our Orchestra.
We offer enormous thanks to Paul Frank, former president of the MO, who served so well as Interim Executive Director for six months, and spearheaded the important planning and execution of this exciting season.
The McLean Youth Orchestra continues to offer enriching opportunities for young people, under the leadership of Dr. John Devlin. I hope you will be able to hear the MYO in one of its three concerts, and cheer them on as they learn and grow.
Please put the McLean Orchestra events on your calendar and join us as often as you can. We welcome both your presence and your financial support. Our 46th season promises to be a wonderful journey.
Thank you and welcome!

M c L E A N O R C H E S T R A 13
As McLean Orchestra embarks upon its 46th year, we look back on recent
achievements and cast our gaze to the future.
Recent achievements include funding of our endowment, thanks to the generosity of long time supporter Stan Richards; strengthening of the Board of Directors with the addition of new members; a successful Gala under the presidency of Chris Payton; a CD recording of the live performance of the James Bond Piano Concerto featuring pianist Thomas Pandolfi with the McLean Orchestra at the 2016 Patrons’ Gala; a successful season by the McLean Youth Orchestra, directed by John Devlin and combined with a special partnership with Vinson Hall Retirement Community; and most importantly, an exceptionally high quality of artistic performance of repertoire throughout
the concert season under the direction of Maestra Miriam Burns.
A major challenge for McLean Orchestra was the need for a permanent venue for our performances. With the Oakcrest venue no longer available, our search led us to local school auditoriums. This, however, proved unworkable, as we could not confirm dates until September, only to learn that the dates we needed were not available. We are most fortunate for the hospitality extended by The Falls Church Episcopal, where three of our four concerts will be held, and Potomac School, which will host our Holiday Concert.
We are especially pleased to welcome Matt Henry as our new Executive Director. His music performance and administrative experience combined with the Artistic prowess of Miriam Burns and our talented musicians, and leadership of Board of Trustees by President Margot Townsend Young signal many great seasons to come!
I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for success to McLean Orchestra. It has been my honor to serve as your Interim Executive Director!
Sincerely yours,
Paul A. Frank, CFREInterim Executive Director McLean Orchestra

David Teie is one of the third generation of musicians. He studied the cello with
Stephen Kates and Berl Senofsky at the Peabody Conservatory, where he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the Wertheimer award for cellists; he also studied with William Pleeth in London on a Fulbright scholarship. He joined the National Symphony in 1984 and has since played nineteen concerto performances with the NSO, twelve of them with Music Director Mstislav Rostropovich conducting, including performances on three U.S. tours. Maestro Rostropovich invited David to study with him privately, leading to six
years of study with the great master. He spent the 1999 - 2000 season as acting principal cellist of the San Francisco Symphony.
Mr. Teie composed the str ing music for an album by Echobrain (founded by Jason Newsted, Metall ica’s former bassist); the NSO commissioned and premiered his Fuga Eroica; and he performed his Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra with the Anchorage Symphony. His flute concerto was premiered in 2010 with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, and he served as Music Director of that orchestra from 2013-2016.
His research involving music and cognition has led to published articles in Biology Letters of the Royal Society and Applied Animal Behavior Science and a chapter in the Oxford University Press book Evolution of Emotional Communication that contains the only comprehensive theory of the origins and affective processes of music that has passed peer review. His research led to invitations to speak at the 11th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition and at the Washington Academy of Sciences. His species-specific music, the first and only music that has elicited appropriate responses from another species in a controlled study, was listed as the New York Times #1 idea of the year in 2009. In 2016 his theoretical paper “The Prenatal Roots of Music” was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology Auditory Cognition Neuroscience. Mr. Teie recently signed an artist agreement with Universal Records, making MusicforCats the first music for any species other than human to be available from a major record company.
