Western Bean Cutworm
WBCW trap counts were zero at all our sites this week (Grand Marsh,
Coloma, Plover)
Egg mass counts have also significantly declined this past
week.
Look for larvae in the tassels or feeding on the silks towards the
kernels.
Corn Saprophytes
Not a pathogen. Just fungi feeding on decaying organic matter that got caught in the leaf collar.
Corn
Weather conditions have caused an above-average amount of gooseneck and lodging this year.
We have made observations of 5-20% stand loss.
Corn
Kernel Abortion
Caused by stress factors during grain fill of R-stage development.

tubers per stem.
Bigger sets = smaller average size/tuber
Smaller sets = larger average size/tuber
The size of the set that you want changes by variety and can be
influenced by many factors.
For Russets, the ideal set is on the smaller side; somewhere between 3-5
tubers/stem.

desired shape of the tubers and it changes depending on variety.

Russet varieties and some specialty varieties are ideally of shape

Off-type tubers are caused by a number of environmental and nutritional factors that usually involve some quick, drastic
change in status.
Although off-type tubers traditionally do not make it to market there are a few
retailers that have special bins of "imperfect produce".

MH-30
• - – may badly burn weak canopies or any canopy if applied in hot conditions
• Active ingredient is maleic hydrazide
• Purpose: shut down meristematic growth 1. To prevent sprouting in storage
2. To shut down the further growth of small tubers in the set so that only the mid-sized and large tubers get bigger.
3. To - characteristics
Timing is tricky with MH-30 and the effect of an application will vary based on which specific formulation you choose.
Royal MH-30 is a registered trademark of Crompton Corporation

Potato Maturation
Not all fields will reach the maturity of that pictured at left.
In fact, some fields will be nowhere near maturity at the time of vine-kill.
Some may even be too healthy, which jeopardizes the success of vine-kill operations and may lead to poor skin set.
